My writer’s Block Furry Creature called “Cough Up-19” (and Baby) were with me for nearly three months at the start of the pandemic last year. Thank you for suggesting to illustrate it so now I can put a face to the name. If only it would just go away and quite making so much trouble.

Naming the enemy reduces fear. Well done, Cindy. And by asking what it has for you, you are making it your friend. A good thing to try when stuck. Thanks for the creative idea to get going again.

I can’t recall if there was ever a video post for Storystorm before, but I enjoyed it, Cindy! I like the idea of drawing and facing your Writers Block Creature. Better yet, if you befriend it, you’ll hopefully flourish in your writing. Thanks for sharing!

great hairy snap-tooth! I believe they are indigenous to writing areas and some are small enough to lurk between the keys on keyboards. I’m pretty sure one got tangled in my typewriter ribbon back in the day (er, millennium)

I appreciate the concept of externalizing a feeling. As for the video itself, it has the feel of a last minute homework assignment, but it could be that I need a second cup of coffee.

I can hardly draw stick people but I love curved lines anyway. In one easy lesson you taught me how to create new characters for when the block gets in the way. Snap Tooth has given me my StoryStorm idea for now. However, I can’t wait to see what characters I can come up with. Thank you for this unique and fun post.

Yessssssss!!!! That internal monster is squiggly and hairy and blobby and sticky and slimy and capable of eating thin wisps of ideas in a single chomp, before they ever get a chance to grow up and become a finished story! Thanks for throwing a little visual perspective on the fermentation pile. Now off to draw my monster. Cheers!

When you’re stuck with no ideas, just start writing – or drawing – and see what happens! Either you come out of it with a new idea, or you have no new ideas but sharper skills…either way, it’s a win.

I LOVE this! As an illustrator, I am so into visualizing, yet never thought to create my own stuck monster… well now I have done the pencil sketch and eager to expand on it with color! It’s all blobby and has me stuck inside its big mouth.
HAHAHA! Now I can blame him instead of me, and climb right out.
Maybe after I tickle his tongue he’ll extend his tongue…
Hmm I sense potential dangers in this choice, but I’m now feeling activated to take action. Promise him some taffy? He looks like he’ll love taffy!

CONGRATULATIONS on your Caldecott Honor!! Woo-hoo!!
And, thank you for sharing your writer’s block creature! (In keeping with its difficult nature, mine is camera shy.)

As a writer, not an illustrator, I don’t always feel comfortable with drawing because I don’t have any real skills. But this felt very freeing and fun! Congratulations on the Caldecott!!

What a fun idea. And the cool thing is that perhaps the creature can morph so you can do this activity multiple times over a longer span on time. Thanks for the suggestion.

SnapTooth’s big hairy foot looks horrifically familiar to my husband’s feet!! 🙂 Thank you for this, Cindy. When I get stuck I have to do something with my hands, whether it’s doodle, sew, or play piano.
