The 2022 Storystorm Pledge is now closed.
If you’ve been participating in Storystorm all month, you’ve been generating oodles of ideas!
Luckily you don’t need oodles to “win” the Storystorm challenge. You just need 30 of them!
When you have 30 ideas, you can qualify to win one of the AMAZING Storystorm Grand Prizes—feedback on your best 5 picture book ideas from one of these kidlit agents!
- Ammi-Joan Paquette, Erin Murphy Literary Agency
- Tara Gonzalez, Erin Murphy Literary Agency
- Sean McCarthy, Sean McCarthy Literary Agency
- Kelly Sonnack, Andrea Brown Literary Agency
- Charlotte Wenger, Prospect Agency
- Lisa Fleissig & Ginger Harris-Dontzin, Liza Royce Agency
- Maeve MacLysaght, Copps Literary Services
- Susan Hawk, Upstart Crow Literary
- and a special consult from me!
In order to qualify for a Grand Prize, your name must be on the registration post AND the pledge below.
If you have 30 ideas, put your right hand on a picture book and repeat after me:
I do solemnly swear that I have faithfully executed
the Storystorm 30-ideas-in-January challenge,
and will, to the best of my ability,
parlay my ideas into picture book manuscripts.
Now I’m not saying all 30 ideas have to be good. Some may just be titles, some may be character quirks. Some may be problems and some may create problems when you sit down to write. Some may be high-concept and some barely a concept. But…they’re yours, all yours!
You have until February 7th at 11:59:59PM EST to sign the pledge by leaving a comment on this post.
PLEASE COMMENT ONLY ONCE.
The name you left on the registration post and the name you leave on this winner’s pledge SHOULD MATCH. However, when you comment, WordPress also logs info that allows me to recognize you, so don’t worry if they’re not exact.
Again, please COMMENT ONLY ONCE. If you make a mistake, contact me instead of leaving a second comment.
Remember, this is an honor system pledge. You don’t have to send in your ideas to prove you’ve got 30 of them. If you say so, I’ll believe you! Honestly, it’s that simple. (Wouldn’t it be nice if real life were that straightforward.)
Before you sign, you can also pick up your Winner’s Badge!
There are winner’s mugs and T-shirts you can purchase at cafepress.com/storystorm. All proceeds ($4 per item, if you enter via the link) go to Blessings in a Backpack. If there’s other SWAG you want, I can add it to the shop…just ask!
Now…are you ready to sign?
Then GO FOR IT! Let’s see your name below!

2022 was my first year participating in Storystorm. It was tremendous. I got loads of inspiration from it and am already working on the first draft of a new PB manuscript to share with my reading group as a result. I’m super grateful for you!

This was a deeply encouraging challenge and an incredible way to set me up for the year. My goal for 2022 is to write six picture books, and after completing this month of brainstorming, I feel not only equipped, but that my mind has been focused so that my job in the coming months isn’t to work for ideas but to bring the ones I generated to life. Would you be able to add stickers to the swag site? I’d love to order one, it’s my preferred way of marking milestones 🙂

This was my first Storystorm, and I hope this will be part of my life every January from here on out! I’ve always thought of myself as a good writer who wasn’t very creative at coming up with ideas. 36 storystorm ideas later, I have a new narrative about myself. Thank you so much for making this a thing!

Most productive StoryStorm for me yet! Inspired at the beginning to make a LOG for the different types of ideas, to go back easier. If I count the tiny seeds to the full first drafts it came to 125! Now I don’t really see them as 125 separate ideas. But I wrote 4 full first drafts. My critique group has now approved highly of 2 of these! And I’ve been doing these while being shifted from my evacuated apartment to hotel to hotel … The beauty of this was some days gave me nothing concrete, but so many days fed other days, and just like when you brainstorm with free association, they bounced against each other. Sort of like a pinball machine, where some balls are total duds, but others light up the board! Thank you all!
I pledge to StoryStorm by first born child… oh sorry, she’s an adult now, and might not agree to that.

I did it! I am exhausted, yet still have so many exciting themes to explore. The daily guest blog posts were a treasure, and a few gave me excited leads or confirmed what I was feeling about the process of writing.
This was my 3rd Storystorm. Each yr I’m more prepared. I started grouping my list and collection of mentor texts in November. I read through & highlighted. I thought I’d be ready. What surprised me was that in order to write the beginnings of a song related to the book theme, I needed way more lyrics than I was prepared to use.Just for a verse and chorus sample. I have unlimited admiration for writers & illustrators that have to do TONS of research & note taking before they can begin the project. I ended up spending long nights doing research for the songs. Some were time period pieces so I needed to know what the music of the day was. There were considerations like what an animal or environment would sound like translated to music. What rhythms? What instruments? Every year Storystorm gives me (and others) an enthusiastic start to the kidlit year, filled with possibilities. I will continue to work with my ideas, will have at least 2 kidlit songs to share soon, and I will continue to look for author-songwriters, because you guys are the wordsmiths. Thank you Tara for your generous support & for all the hard work that went into Storystorm. Please consider me seriously for one of the prizes. Stay well all!

I do solemnly swear that I am up to no good, no, wait, that’s the wrong pledge. Thank you for offering this opportunity! It was my first StoryStorm. I found it instructive to check in daily and focus on generating or expanding ideas. Putting them in writing has made me feel more accountable. It was wonderful to receive a daily prompt. Ideas are swirling on multiple levels.

Now Tara … did you just recently add to the pledge the part about parlaying these 30 ideas into picture book manuscripts? I thought I just had to come up with 30 ideas, easy peasy. 🙂 I am going to accept this challenge and yes, attempt to parlay my 30 ideas into pb manuscripts, although there might need to be some combination of these ideas going into fewer than 30 manuscripts. Thank you so much for a wonderful month! It is enlightening and inspiring, as always. I love feeling more connected to this writing community. Grateful for you.

This was my first Story Storm and it yielded 43 story ideas! I signed up as Ana and during the days inbetween I used Ana Archi in the comments section. I’m an Architect by day working on PB stories to help kids learn the joy of architecture and laugh along the way. Hence the name Ana Archi. Hope it didn’t cause too much confusion.
