by Kayleen West
As a child, my mother used to tell everyone, “She’s such a daydreamer (adding a disapproving sigh).” I used to hate it, but she was right; I do dream big—and love it, it’s what creative people do best. You may be the same. When communicating in words or pictures it is the way we bless others. We invite others into our dreams and adventures, make them smile, laugh or indulge a little. I am a dreamer. I do dream of a better world-it can be ugly. I can’t save children from pain and disappointment, but if my books help a child smile, laugh, or feel better about themselves or their situation, I have contributed.
I started living this dream job in late 2010. I began late in life (I’m 48) but threw everything into it. I hope to bring many book babies into the world. There is nothing better than adding positives to a child’s life, and what better way than through picture books.
When Tara asked me to share my success story, I was eager to have the opportunity to publicly thank her. I never forgot PiBoIdMo had been instrumental in the birth of my new book, and had helped me form a good habit. You know, we can be slogging away in this industry, unaware of the impact we can have on others. She may blush at this but Tara should be credited with sowing seeds of success with her creative challenge. It is an unpaid gig but something to be very proud of. So thank you Tara!
Creative Challenges
I love creative challenges. They motivate me to be brave, step out in the new, learn, and grow as an artist. I tend to throw myself in 200% believing for something great—no loss in trying right?
Participating in the November 2011 PiBoIdMo I made a commitment to find a minimum of 30 picture book ideas. I focussed more on creating the habit daily rather than the quantity. Giving it my usual 200% I finished with almost double my intended goal. I was also left with the motivation to write more often.
Loaded with a smorgasbord of ideas and incredibly inspired, I began developing a few. You’ll never guess which one made it into publication first? Answer: the very last one—my last idea became my first publishing house success. WITHOUT ME, published by Wombat Books, has just been pre-released this month and will be launched in November. Sometimes we give up just before success. I wonder what if I had not completed the 30 days? Okay, let’s not go there.
Thinking up ideas wasn’t difficult as I am often flooded with inspiration if I look for it. My challenge is always deciding which ideas to develop and not all at once. I get pretty enthusiastic. Many of the ideas that presented themselves from PiBoldMo were worth exploring, and so I have worked to develop more of them. Anyone else need an extra lifetime for writing?
I haven’t submitted many at all. After signing with Wombat Books, everything took off like crazy (personally and professionally), including a second, third, and possibly a forth picture book contract in the past 12 months! Do note that two of these I am illustrating only. I only say this to show you that contract work can snowball once you get started. Sometimes publishers want to see you will follow through and are easy to work with.
At the time I was working on my very first picture book, ADOPTIVE FATHER (a personal non-profit project) which was very important and a lot was going on, but I decided that PiBoldMo was a good investment of my time—was I right OR WHAT?
I hope this inspires you to throw yourself into PiBoldMo 2013 and see what you come up with. I pray my success story encourages you to sign up, be inspired and birth a publishing winner this November.
Hopefully we will be reading about your book next year.

“Sometimes we give up just before success.” That is motivational in itself, and many folks’ success stories usually mention something along the same lines. It’s those “don’t give up” jewels that always inspire me the most. Thanks for sharing your success story with us, Kayleen! (I’m a late bloomer too!) :0)

Doons, my parents were battlers so I think this is were that attitude came from. I saw an example in them that told me that anything is possible with commitment and dedication.

I’m already finding ideas simply because I’m thinking about this challenge. I’ve started a list with about 12 ideas already, so there is certainly something simple but effective to this idea.

Yes, what if you hadn’t persevered? In America, the end of November coincides with Thanksgiving, one of our busiest family holidays, and it’s easy to find excuses for not writing. Your example is an inspiration for pushing through, possibly keeping a notebook in the kitchen. 🙂

Excatly! The thing is we can over think it. We need only put a title down, or anything that “could” lead to a story. Like most things, when you start you end up doing more than you thought, it begins to flow after the initial procrastination.

Kayleen, your story inspires me to continue on as well. I, too, am a “late bloomer writer.” I hope I win your book, because I’ve been adopted twice. Once by earthly parents, and once by my heavenly Father. 🙂
October 29, 2013 at 4:17 pm
Kayleen West - Children's Author/Illustrator
Here is a fun fact for you Patricia: When Adoptive Father arrived I had a lady in my home and I felt a real tug on my heart to give her a book for some reason. She didn’t have any children so I wondered why I would feel to give her the very first copy. She looked at me in shock, like I had handed her gold! She then said, “Did you know I was adopted?” I didn’t. She rand me later that night teary and told me how much the book meant to her. I was sooooo touched! These moments are the buzz for me. When you see your little books impact others (including adults) that is more rewarding than anything. Adopted twice – how special is that!?

I think the message here is that you can’t stop at dreaming. You also have to live your dreams, because unless you are ‘doing’ the dreaming will be for naught. It’s always inspiring to read about someone who is dreaming and doing.

Great post…but could you answer me what was your approach to brainstorming ideas of Pibo?
October 29, 2013 at 5:19 pm
Kayleen West - Children's Author/Illustrator
Sure Susanne. I made sure I was on the lookout during each day for an idea.
Driving was the best time. I made sure the radio was off and I’d come up with lots at this time – still do. Back home, I’d pull up my ideas folder on my PC (where I have a manuscript template ready to go), and add the details numbering and rough title on each one. This is why I know which idea was used for Without Me?
I came up with 2 this morning the same way traveling back from dropping my children off to school. Because I am so busy getting a launch together and working on a few books right now I printed out the PiBoIdMo logo and hang it on over my screen at night. As I move it each morning, it reminds me to look out during the day.

Thank you for sharing with us, Kayleen! What an inspiring post! I’ am also a “late bloomer” who started writing after my better half of 34 years died10 years ago. At first it was just something to keep my mind occupied but then the writing bug bit and I began to treat my writing as a professional job.
I have always been a dreamer and I borrowed my writing motto from Norman Vaughan who was the cheif dog musher on Admiral Byrd’s 1928 expedition to the South Pole. At the age of 72 he competed in his first Iditarod completing 13 in all, the last being in 1990 when he was 84. Can you imaging traveling 1,000 miles across interior Alaska by dogsled… at age 84?
But Norman wasn’t through by a long shot…
To honor Norman for his contributions as chief dog driver, Admiral Byrd named a mountain after him. On December 16, 1994, three days before his 89th birthday, Norman fulfilled a lifelong dream. He climbed his namesake, Mount Vaughan, a 10,302 foot peak in Antarctic.
Another quote of his that I keep by my computer is, “You haven’t failed until you quit.”

Oops, sorry about the typos and for not including his motto which is, “Dream Big and Dare to Fail!”

Thanks for the inspiration Kayleen. It’s great to see a fellow Christian doing so well, sometimes it feels a bit lonely writing Christian stories when everyone else isn’t. All the best with your book sales!

Kayleen West - Children's Author/Illustrator
Hi Natalie,
There are a few writing Christian content. My newest book Without Me? isn’t Christian, even though it has good values. In fact, I alternate (unintentionally, but that is how it has happened) from secular to the Christian market and back again. There are communities you can be involved in like Omega Writers if you feel alone 🙂

Wonderful post, Kayleen. You made me stop a moment when you said you are a late bloomer at age 48. You reminded me I’m older than that, a landmark birthday coming in 18 days, and I’ve yet to find someone to accept my story manuscripts for publishing.
I have been a daydreamer/dreamer forever; what hinders me is the knowledge that getting published is so very hard. Perhaps I am looking at it with the wrong attitude.
Thanks for the inspiration.

Dreamers are essential in this world. Thank you for such an inspiring post. I will remember your sudden realization of what would (or rather wouldn’t) have happened if you’d given up before the end of November in 2011. Oh my. I’m a late “bud” waiting to bloom, and enjoying the process of unfurling my petals. Each learning experience, each challenge like PiBoIdMo and 12×12, helps my petals stretch out a little bit more. Thank you for contributing to that blossoming.

This post was heartening since I started late in life after my career came to a close. I never had time to fully finish something I was writing because my job and family took all my time. I hope this is a good time for children’s picture books.
October 30, 2013 at 3:34 pm
Kayleen West - Children's Author/Illustrator
Yes I think so Debra. Picture books will always be around I think, even the eBooks cannot replace the printed book completely. There is room for both and plenty of them. Kids who love to read, devour books and need lots of them. But kids are discerning and demand good books so craft is everything.

I loved hearing your story! Thanks for your enthusiasm and encouragement to all of us. I was especially excited to see your book Adoptive Father. Hi Dorina, Adoptive Father isn’t about adopting a child but about the heart of adoption for one another, so I guess it speaks into all sorts of situations. I wish you every success with your manuscript and with the even greater blessing – adopting a new family member!
