I have questions.
Musical notes are named after the first seven letters of the alphabet—A thru G—but when we learn to play the piano, we begin at Middle C. Why? Why not Middle A?

Odd questions like this may keep you up at night, and, they demonstrate an unyielding curiosity. This is an excellent quality to possess as a picture book author. It keeps us akin to our young audiences, who are asking the perennial “WHY?” questions about blue skies and 8pm bedtimes.
There are things around you right now that you don’t fully understand. What are they? What have you always wanted to know more about? Chances are, others want to learn about those things, too.
Why do dogs bark and cats meow? Why are clouds fluffy? Why do I need to use soap in the bath?
Children learn about their world by living, breathing, and reading.
Of course, no one knows ALL the answers. But you—you can certainly fill in some blanks.
Speaking of blanks, I hope your Storystorm journal is now filled with plenty (maybe even a plethora) of story ideas to keep you motivated and writing through this year. The goal of this month’s challenge is to compile at least 30 story ideas, and if you haven’t, today is the time to explore your curiosity and expand that list.
I will post the “Storystorm Pledge” tomorrow, which you can sign to affirm that you indeed have 30 ideas. You’ll be able to pick up your “Winner” badge and show it off. Then, of course, we will distribute the prizes. (Although having 30 story ideas is a prize in itself, right?)
I hope 2025 turns out to be your most creative, prolific year yet.

Generating 30 story ideas is a prize in itself, indeed! Add them to years worth of PB ideas from PiBoIdMo and Storystorm, and we will be busy until the next epoch. Thank you, Tara, for all the time and effort you invest in helping us! You are much appreciated! –Kim Peterson

Thank you for Storystorm 2025. It has given us a lot to think about. Asking, “Why?” , helps us look at the world from the perspective of a child. That’s a good place to be for writing childrens’ books.

Thank you for that insight! Being a teacher, that was always the top question, “Why.”
Sometimes I had fun turning that question around and asking the student, “Why do you think is the reason?” Boy, did we have some great discussions! I believe I have to be more in tune with the “why” in my writing.

Hi Tara, Thank you so much for doing all this for picture book writers all over. I learned a lot and gained some wisdom about writing. I will be traveling and away from all social media so won’t be able to sign the pledge that I came up with 30 story ideas. But that’s okay, as you say, the ideas are enough.
I look forward to next year.

Thank you, Tara, for all you do, including organizing Storystorm each year. I would like to offer some constructive feedback: many of the posts from this month are thoughtful, practical, idea-generating prompts. And many are not. They are often packed full with thoughtful advice for writers — which is wonderful — but they are not focused on helping other writers to generate ideas, which is the main objective. They are more in line with “believe in yourself” and “don’t give up,” or “keep revising.” All good advice, but not helpful in generating 30 fresh ideas in 30 days.
I felt this way last year as well but did not share my feedback, so I’m sharing it this year for consideration. Thanks again — I truly appreciate your hard work and support for writers everywhere.

I agree with this criticism. For the last two years I’ve picked bloggers randomly because I was overwhelmed with requests to guest blog. It seemed the easiest way. But I see how that might have contributed to the change in some posts. I’ll have to think about how to improve my selection method for next year. I appreciate the feedback!

As a piano teacher and pianist for a very long time, I never even questioned that. It’s just what you do!
I googled a bit and there’s no definitive answer. It seems music theory and notation was evolving along with keyboards and there’s not a clear reason.
I teach students the order of notes starting with A and then they typically start playing at C. Perhaps that’s what sounds better. And it is the middle of the piano. 🤷♀️
January 31, 2025 at 2:14 pm

I read something that said the C-scale is played with no sharps or flats, just with the white keys, but that’s not the definitive answer, either!

Woo-HOOOOO! I’ve been Storystorming since the git-go and was PiBoIdMoing before that. This is the first year, ever, I’ve actually “kept up.” What a heap of fun! My big question is: Which ideas have legs? Hmmm. I just got idea #42 for my journal. 🙂
Big cheers to all, and thanks to Tara and all the posters!

I have so many questions! It’s why I originally caved and got a smart phone–I was pestering everyone around me with weird wonderings. Fortunately, kids also wonder lots of things! Huzzah!
I love when kids ask questions that you think you know the answer to, but when you try to put it in words, you realize you know a lot less than you thought. Research time!

TARA & OUR LIVELY PIANO PLAYER, ROWLF THE DOG: THANK YOU for INSPIRING us to be like our biggest reading audience by continuing to learn about our world by “. . . living, breathing, and reading,” TOO! By remaining childlike through curiosity by ALWAYS being OPEN to asking “WHY!?!”, we, TOO, can see the world through the eyes of a child. How else could we write for these ever-curious beings if we ourselves aren’t curious? How can we expect to be a part of their world if we don’t try to understand it and make sense of it through a bit of ink and paper? Now, my questions of the day are: DOES STORYSTORM HAVE TO END? WHY DOES IT GO BY SO FAST???!!!??? 😉

Why stop at G? Why not H, I J K? Or numbers? I mean, if keys were numbered you wouldn’t even need to read notes that wander up and down the staff! Of course, writing chords would be pretty darn impossible!

Hi Tara!
As I look through my notes and story ideas I am blown away! This experience has been “wicked cool”, and I am overwhelmed by the generous amount of idea sharing by your guest authors. I never would have expected to generate 31 story ideas!!!
Asking questions are important for all ages. My wish as a PB writer is to answer a child’s question with heart, humor, and honesty in my stories.
I look forward to next year’s Storystorm and thank you again, Tara for this wonderful experience!

Thanks for another great month full of inspiration and ideas, Tara. Storystorm is what brought me back to writing, way back when it was PiBoIdMo. Every year reminds me how much I love this kickstarter for creativity and just plain fun.

Right now, my sons are 4 and 7, and the questions never stop, and while it can grow tiring, it’s also so fun because it sends me off question for answers.

Why do some people dislike peanut butter, mushrooms, and coffee (me!) while other people think they taste great?

kelliannedy
I think I know the answer to your question! And when I started typing it out just now, I’m embarrassed to admit how long of a response it was, haha! The sum-up version has to do with the amount of keys on a pianoforte (88), with the lowest note starting the musical alphabet (A), and the very middle line on a grand staff being the note C. I better go now and write a funny children’s book about musical notation! Thanks for a great story storm this year!

Tara, I deeply appreciate all you do in arranging and operating StoryStorm! It is a wonderful and welcoming way to enter into the new year and renewed commitments to our writing goals and dreams. I LOVE QUESTIONS! I always told our students that the questions are almost more important than the answers, for we need to ask our questions very carefully in order to truly get the answers we are looking for, AND each question can bring up another(!), so that life will forever be interesting! Thank you so much!

Thank you for all the time and work you give us every year to make Storystorm so helpful to aspiring writers, and older whippersnappers like myself who never give up. Asking “What if?” in all the projects I do helps to make writing easier to some point. It’s editing down the ideas to what works and what doesn’t is the hard part. Then the true editing starts. Thank you for everything and how to see Storystorm next January.

Unlike a lot of PB writers, I don’t have a lot of specific childhood memories to draw on. My memory for specifics is terrible. But I have always been a very curious person, and I think it’s one of the reasons that I am drawn to write for children.
