Welcome to Day 24 of Storystorm! If you’re like me, pretty soon your gleeful Storystorm inspired so many fantastic new ideas! will crash headlong into the reality of When can I possibly develop them?
Don’t despair! Instead of squeezing water from a rock, as the saying goes, you must squeeze time from a rock. Here are three tips for fitting more writing into your already-full schedule.
- Tip #1: Writing is about trade-offs. Be at peace with letting some things slide.
‘Time’ is a tricky concept. My so-called “instant success story” of signing with my agent in June 2021 and landing my first picture book contract just four months later doesn’t show how long it took to reach those milestones. (15 years, BTW, but who’s counting?)
What I really want to stress is what ELSE I’ve been doing all this time: Raising two active kids, working a demanding full-time teaching job, volunteering, commuting, carrying out environmental projects, training rescued dogs, and much more.
The key to doing it all is doing some of it badly. My house is messy, I haven’t added to the family scrapbook in years, and bramble is invading my pollinator field. But these are sacrifices I’ve made for the sake of my writing.
- Tip #2: You will not FIND more writing time; you must MAKE it.
The stork won’t flap to your home and deliver a joyful bundle of hours. Nope, not ever. The only time you’ll have to write is that which you actively hunt down, pounce upon, tie up, and claim.
Just as Storystorm trains your brain to draw inspiration from everyday life, you must actively train your brain to utilize every sliver of that hard-earned time. Which brings us to…
- Tip #3: Match each specific writing task to its required concentration.
To fully ‘get’ this, I’m challenging you to a hands-on activity. You’ll need scissors, scratch paper, and your favorite writing tool. Go get ‘em.
Ready? Here we go.
- 1. Prep your paper.
Cut it into about a dozen slips or so, each big enough for a phrase. Stop reading this blog, right now, and cut up that paper before you continue. (Or substitute sticky notes, if that’s your thing.) - 2. Record your writing tasks.
On each slip of paper, record one of your writing-related to-dos. Dig deep, and remember the little administrative tasks, too. Here’s about half of my list:
-
- Catch up on Storystorm (my 7th year!)
- Save files to external drive
- Draft new manuscript
- Study library books for rhyming patterns and layered NF text structure
- Research how the heck to make a website
- Read latest PW Children’s Bookshelf rights report
- Revise something really challenging
- Research for latest manuscript
- Look up SCBWI workshop
- 3. Rank your tasks by level of required concentration.
It’s time to create your own personal Column-o-Concentration. Move your I-must-focus-so-don’t-even-think about talking-to-me task to the top, with the rest in descending order.
Remember, it’s not about priorities. Each of these pieces serves your writing career in some way. It’s about the CONCENTRATION REQUIRED for that particular task. Go ahead and rank your tasks. This hands-on manipulation activates a different part of your brain, so if you skip the process, you’re cheating yourself. Here’s my column:
- 4. Consider the realities of your schedule.
This is the very most important, MUST-NOT-SKIP step. Reflect upon your Column-o-Concentration and think about your time commitments. What’s happening today? What obligations do you anticipate in the next two weeks? Two months? Do you see any writing task you could complete even in a distraction-filled setting? For example, I need my full concentration to write, so that golden, sacred time only happens early in the morning before anybody else stirs. But I’ve requested library books during my son’s screaming karate class, and I’ve looked up SCBWI workshops while sweating poolside through my kids’ swim lessons. Critiquing for my peers happens over lunch when there’s minimal distraction. I listen to Renee LaTulippe’s online rhyming lessons as I cook, and to Picture Book Look podcasts when I weed. Organizing files during the TV’s blaring football game works just fine. I study picture books by veteran writers while waiting in the car at the school pick-up line, and during Covid lockdowns I rewatched webinars while huffing on the treadmill. To prove I practice what I preach, here are snapshots of the actual picture books I hauled around this week in my front seat, and the oh-so-fancy 2x4s across my treadmill that balance my laptop:
- 5. State ALOUD when and where you could realistically accomplish each task.
Stating it aloud is like making a promise to yourself. Don’t worry if folks stare, we writers can claim a certain level of eccentricity.
The trick is to be honest as you match your writing tasks with your realities. It takes practice, but you can do it! Train your brain to squeeze time from a rock as if your writing life depends on it. Your new Storystorm ideas are counting on you!
Louise M. Aamodt attended her first picture book class in 2006, and has been tackling that beast ever since. Her debut, A FOREST BEGINS ANEW, illustrated by Elly MacKay and published by Astra Young Readers, rolls out in 2025. You can find Lou mumbling rhyming words as she lops thistles in the pasture, studying picture books in the kid section of the dentist’s lobby, or on Twitter @LouiseMAamodt. That last one is definitely the easiest way to connect.
Lou is offering a picture book critique. Her agent, Emily S. Keyes of Keyes Agency LLC, is offering another participant feedback on a picture book manuscript plus its accompanying query. One each of these prizes will go to two winners.
You’re eligible to win if you’re a registered Storystorm 2023 participant and you have commented only once on today’s blog post. ↓
Prizes will be distributed at the conclusion of Storystorm.

Thank you for this–sticky notes are a great idea. When writers claim to squeeze in writing time while their kids are taking a bath or whatever, I think, how is that possible? How can you think? So I love the prioritizing. I also request (too many!) library books during kids’ classes.

So many great times and I agree completely that you won’t find that writing time, you need to make it. I used to get up early during the weekdays before work and would be unsociable at ballet lessons for my daughter at the weekend, and write while I waited.

Also, if i’m honest, i can prioritise lower concentration tasks bc they are easy wins –> but the early morning is when i have the gift of solo time. I totally LOVE column-o-concentration! And I am a book hauler, too. I also hang time frames on tasks – reading 5 books is 30 min. Brushing teeth is 2 minutes. Now if I could do them both at the same time…..

Thank you for the hands-on exercise and for sharing photos from your experiences! I love the suggestion to list out what needs to be done (I’ll be sure to start each task with verbs as you did!) but ensure it’s a physical list that can be manipulated to determine the most beneficial task order; that’s really helpful. Thank you!

Congrats, Lou on your debut, and thanks for these time-organizing tips. This is pretty much how I function, too. What can I squeeze and when can I squeeze it? And you’re exactly right, writerly stuff happens at the expense of other stuff. There are only so many hours in a day. I’m great about writing new drafts, but get bogged down with revisions and intimidated by submissions. So, this year, I am challenging myself to do a better job with revisions and submissions. . . .time to squeeze in more researching agents, writing pitches, query letters, and revision, revision, revision.

I laughed so hard when I read, “The stork won’t flap to your home and deliver a joyful bundle of hours.” Time is certainly a funny thing. When I was younger, it seemed endless, but now that I’m older, I feel like I’m trying to outrun it!
Luckily, writing is a labor of love, so even if I’m juggling my time, it’s worth every minute.

Thank you, Louise! Keeping those tasks organized makes such a difference! I know what I want to get done, but in the doing of one, another slips by! To prioritize and track the completion of the tasks (just like we would track projects in other parts of our lives!) assures continuing awareness of one’s progress along the way. Thank you!
Now – back to my list….!

What a great post, Louise! Thank you for showing us how to “squeeze time from a rock” with your practical writing suggestions.
Two things really connected … “The key to doing it all is doing some of it badly.” This one is hard for me, as I tend to be a perfectionist. And yet your suggestion to, “Be at peace with letting some things slide” is a bit easier for me, which would seem to be a contradiction for a perfectionist. I learned to make friends a long time ago with the dust bunnies lurking in the corners and hiding under the beds when my kids were little. I even had a silver grey calico cat named Dustbunny!

This is a good reminder that some writing related tasks (listening to podcasts, backing up files (!), reading picture books, etc don’t require the concentrated effort of drafting/revising. They are valid parts of writing that can easily be fit in – even by multi-tasking – as long as you remember.

Definitely relatable and I feel seen! With an 8 y/o, 3 y/o twins, and my wife being physically disabled, on top of a full time job, it can be tricky to squeeze between those rocks to write.

I deeply appreciate this honest and practical writing technique. I think I could write novels about just the first piece–understanding that you have to let some things go and (the really hard part) figuring out which of those you should let go. The people pleasers among us and super FOMO sufferers will understand my quandary, especially because I am learning to draw inspiration from all around me, so sometimes I have to be open..to unfilled time, to meeting new people, to observing the world around me, to quiet moments. I’m considering those my “Storystorm brainstorm” post-it–ranked #4 on my Column o’ Concentration.

Such a great way of looking at things. I already make to do lists on my phone and text/email them to myself. I also put them in order like you did with the post it notes. But I’ll add this to my goals journal and break it down by each season for what I need to focus on. That seems to work best for me. I love how you have the picture books strapped into the seatbelt. Many time management exercises make you rank your to-do list in terms of how much priority it holds; I love that you recognize that EVERYTHING is a priority, and that the deciding factor in when they get done is the amount of concentration required (NOT how “important” each task is!) Thank you, friend!

Thank you, Louise. Prioritizing has always been one of my big weaknesses. For instance, taking notes in school was terrible. I couldn’t decide what was most important so I tried writing everything down. Ouch! If I highlighted, the book pages became a yellow blur. So, I’m going to try your “Column-O-Concentration” technique. It can only help. Wish me luck!

Oooh, I love this idea! I often do a lot of this (squeezing in more brainless tasks while doing other things) but I’ve never thought about creating an actual LIST like this to help facilitate it. I do find sometimes that I have a 10 min window and I’m like “there MUST be something more productive I can be doing with this time than scrolling through FB!” I may need to keep this list on my phone so when I have those little windows I can get something more meaningful accomplished! Thanks so much!

“The key to doing it all is doing some things badly” is living life realistically. For you, a messy house must be accepted since you are in the minority number of your crew. I think a lot about the energy each task takes. I usually make a to-do list weekly and then assess what I can accomplish each morning. If my sleep gets disrupted or I have a migraine or I have to keep a kid home sick from school, I may not have the energy to write as much as I want. But I can usually revise at least a little. And I can almost always read, do research, watch a webinar, or participate in an online forum. I do as much as I can every day and figure it adds up over time.

Hi Louise! I actually wrote your quote on a post-it note, as I loved it and SO agree with it: “The only time you’ll have to write is that which you actively hunt down, pounce upon, tie up, and claim.”
I feel like I very much have done what you do with respect to working on your ‘to do’ list in the spaces of life for about 8 years . . . I am however starting to try to be a bit more mindful in some tasks, as stuffing so much in for so long made me realize that my mind needs some quieter time.

This post really hit home for me. I work full time, own a hobby farm, have 2 kids (one with sensory challenges), a hubby, and a new puppy. Time is a strange phenomenon and I often find more of it slipping away than I’d like. At this point I’ve basically narrowed things down to the bare essentials…but even then I struggle to find more than 10 min at a time (Yes…I already get up at 4 am!!!!!!). But I think this has inspired me to take a look as what I can let go or how to delegate to my kids.

OMG, I felt this line: “The key to doing it all is doing some of it badly.” LOL! It’s so true! It’s all about prioritizing and then being kind to yourself about only being human! Thank you for sharing this!

I have to admit, I usually tackle easy tasks before hard tasks. By the time I’m ready for the hard stuff, I’ve often used up a lot of mental and physical energy…so I end up postponing the hard tasks. Thanks for your time-usage tips.

Louise thank you so much for this post. I know I have to find time to do things. Honestly, though, I will 100% take time if it’s dropped into my lap. I’m not sure if I’m willing to take it from the stork. I know the kind of time that thing brings and it’s not at all going to help me get things done! The stork is not fooling me twice. Okay, three times. If my kids have taught me anything it’s don’t trust the stork!

Hi Louise,
You are so right when it it comes to making time for your writing! I appreciate how real and honest you were about your busy schedule and how you work best when it comes to finding those precious slots of time to dedicate solely on your writing.
The treadmill makeshift screen holder is hilarious! I use the screens at the treadmills in the gym – It makes the time go by quicker rather than looking at the seconds tick over as the incline gets steeper on my 30 minute workout session haha!
Another piece of wonderful advice that compliments your post I got from a friend is that, ‘If you love it, you will make time for it’.
Day 24 ideas down.

Such an inspirational post! Thanks. Time is hard. The way things have gone for several years, is that there are certain months I can find time, and then due to volunteering commitments some I can’t. I need full concentration to write, I can sometimes listen to music when doing art layouts – but not if I have a playlist in progress for my dance [takes over!] – and listen to books from Libby on my phone when doing cleanup revisions on layouts or digital work. I like the idea of listing every task to see which I’m avoiding. I know I need more concentration to do this writing & art revision that’s presently only being reworked in my mind. If I’m honest, guess I’ll move that to the top of my list! TY

What phenomenal practical, hands-on advice! Thank you. I love everything you’ve said here, and the way you have shined a light on all the writerly things we do (that I don’t usually give myself credit for). I’m a bad rule follower so I didn’t stop in the middle of the post to get my scissors, but I will love doing this exercise! ‘Tackling that beast’ is a great way to describe writing picture books! I think if I saw a monumental list of things I want to do on sticky notes in front of me, I’d just freeze. Too many things. I do have these tasks in my head though. It’s easier for me if I can’t see it. Then I record what I’ve done in diary form at the end of the day. When you review your week you surprise yourself at what you’ve accomplished.
