by Carrie Tillotson
When people ask me, “Where do you get your ideas?” my too-literal brain often interprets this as, “Please tell me where you were, physically, when you got the inspiration for your book. Were you sitting on the toilet? In the shower? Waiting in the rain for half an hour?” But then I realize what they really want to know is how I get my ideas.
Ironically, one of the main ways I get ideas is by writing in weird places. For instance, one idea sparked while I was revising an old manuscript in a stuffy, steamy pool room. My son was at his swim lesson, and I was sitting on a bench nearby. Every lesson, my son performed a starfish float, a skill where he lay on his back with arms and legs spread like a starfish. Every time, the instructor counted to ten, “One-two-three, four-five-six, seven-eight-nine, BANANAS!” And every time, hysterics ensued.
One day, my son joked with her about ending on ten instead of bananas. “What?” she said. “Don’t you like my counting to bananas?” SPARK! I looked up from my manuscript, then scribbled down the phrase, knowing instantly that this was the stuff of picture book titles. I had no idea what the book was about but knew it was something I had to explore. Five years later, COUNTING TO BANANAS: A MOSTLY RHYMING FRUIT BOOK (Flamingo Books, April 2022), illustrated by Estrela Lourenço, is my debut picture book. All thanks to writing in a hot, humid pool room. Although the book is about an opinionated banana more than a swim lesson and starfish floats, it embodies the same sense of surprise and delight that my son experienced when his swim instructor counted to bananas instead of counting to ten.
With notebook and pen in hand, working on a story in a “weird” place had my creative juices flowing. My mind was tuned into ideas and opportunities. Had I been playing on my phone instead, I might not have even overheard the hilarious conversation. Other “weird” places I’ve written and gotten ideas include:
- Hammock
- Bus
- Library
- Park
- Bus stop bench
- Picnic table
- On the floor in front of the fireplace
- Coffee shop
- Taekwondo dojo
- Airplane
- Beach
- Blanket fort (my personal favorite!)
Weird places I have not yet written, but might enjoy:
- Hot air balloon
- Dogsled
- Gondola
- Disneyland’s Splash Mountain
- The Space Needle
- Under a bed
- Museum
- Tent in the snow
- Treehouse
- She-Shed
- On a surfboard
- Carousel
- On horseback
Okay, okay—maybe I am just listing things I would like to do in general, but I also like to write. Why not mix writing with my favorite activities or even my daily errands? I wrote part of this post while lying upside down over the edge of my bed to see if it inspired anything unusual.
Today, I challenge you to find a weird place to write. Then tune into your surroundings and see what sparks. You never know where inspiration might strike next!
Carrie Tillotson is a biostatistician turned book author. Her debut picture book, Counting to Bananas: A Mostly Rhyming Fruit Book, arrives on shelves in April 2022, followed by its sequel, B is for Bananas: A Going Bananas Book in Spring 2023. As a child, Carrie loved to read, paint, and draw, and thought books were written by dead people. She later met a real-live author and realized she could be an author one day, too. After working as a biostatistician for 13 years, Carrie now sculpts her interest in science and fun into playful picture books. When not reading and writing, you can find her running, playing games, and eating ice cream (though usually not all at the same time). She lives in Oregon with her husband and son, two dogs, and two chickens. Visit her online at carrietillotson.com, and on Twitter and Instagram @carrietillotson.
Carrie is giving away one copy of COUNTING TO BANANAS: A MOSTLY RHYMING FRUIT BOOK (upon its release).

This is so fun, Carrie! I love writing in weird places too. One of my weirdest (yet most fruitful) was in a massage chair. I think it was the relaxation but who knows? Thanks for this fun post and congratulations on COUNTING TO BANANAS. I can’t wait to read it!

I keep a journal with me at all times. I have three. The real full-sized journal, the small pocket going on a walk journal, and the app on my phone to jot down thoughts when it doesn’t make sense to carry a physical journal journal. They allow me to be anywhere and save the words I just heard or the idea that popped into my head.

Thanks for the very interesting post, Carrie! The key word is “weird”, isn’t it? Most kids aren’t afraid to be weird, to do things that others might think of as odd, like skipping down the street while saying the Pledge of Allegiance — BACKWARDS! Or doing normal things in weird places — having a tea party on a tree stump table. If we can tap into the weird by choosing strange (according to adults) places to write maybe we can tap into the kid in us that lurks just beneath the surface.

What a great post and a reminder to see the world from a different kid-friendly perspective! Love the blanket fort — doesn’t get more kid-friendly than that! I’ve gotten ideas at the carousel although it’s an adult book that is only 1/100th written LOL. I enjoy writing in unique spaces and getting the sensory perspective. We vacationed near a creek and I sat on the bank, dipped my feet in the water and wrote about the sensory details. The air, the sounds — everything is different. I used to climb the pecan tree in our yard to play my trumpet. . . Thanks for reminding us to be open to those unique experiences wherever we find them. And, BANANAS looks so super-fun! Love the sense of humor. Can’t wait to read it!

I love it! Both the tent writing, with your trusty companion sidekick, and all the other places. I regularly write in an RV (our home) and my she shed I’ve named Huckleberry Hutch (in 3 seasons, since we’ve discovered it’s toooooo cold in winter in the Pacific Northwest to sit out and freeze my finger tips off). Can’t wait to read your new book! Sounds great!

Being ready to snag ideas no matter where they are – that’s great advice, Carrie. And I LOVE your new book, Counting to Bananas. So clever…but the cleverest part is that you snagged the idea, recognizing that it felt like there could be a story in it – and saved it and worked on it.

I was doing middle school lunch duty outside the hall washrooms when I began planning my first book, High in the Sky. It starts, “Whenever I feel my world’s too small and I’m ready to explode, I just hop on top of my tire swing to zap this overload… It ended up being about a young, energetic child who hops onto a tire swing and flies off on many wild, imaginary adventures.

While I haven’t written in such unusual places as you did, I got a few ideas away from home. I got the while waiting for my kids to get out of school, while grocery shopping, while in church, while at a beach nearby where we used to live, and a few less notable places. I’d like to try a few of the places you mentioned–maybe someday.Great post, Carrie!,

Thank you Carrie… Some of the best ideas come from overheard snippets of conversations had in unexpected places, at least in my humble opinion. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who finds them there.

What a fun post! Thank you Carrie. I love how different locations can spark ideas! I usually write in the same couple of places, but one week, when my kids were at camp, I camped out myself at a cute French cafe. Sitting at a table in the garden patio, eating croissants and writing was really inspiring and productive! Congratulations on your debut book – it sounds absolutely adorable. Good tip to not go automatically to my phone when I’m waiting for my kiddo to finish a lesson someplace… next time I will bring a piece of paper and a pen! Today, my time is limited and it is cold outside, so I may have to consign myself to just inventing a story idea here at my desk, under my cozy blanket.

Counting to Bananas is such a fun phrase and it’s inspiring how you overheard it, wrote it down and just went with it to create a picture book that looks wonderful! Thank you for a great post! Also, when I read your bio and saw that you once thought books were written by dead people, I cracked up! So cute

As a teenager we had a sleepover at a school that had been built on the site of a major battle. (Battlefield Elementary). It was a weird place that had me wondering about trying to learn in a place where all that blood had been shed. Later in life when I was working on a story idea that school came back to me, and the idea of Ghosts on the Soccer Field was formed. So it is true, weird places can be very inspirational!

Yes, you can find inspiration everywhere, if you are just open to it. I “wrote” one of my favorite haikus while driving (actually committed it to memory). I saw the shadow of leaves instead of the shadow and that sparked the poem. I’ll be looking for your book. Thanks for the post, Carrie.

The idea for my first book came from a museum where I was volunteering. I saw part of Neil Armstrong’s wind tunnel. Building one, JUST like the Wright Brothers fascinated me. It turned into Neil Armstrong’s Wind Tunnel Dream. Another story came from a real lockdown drill – we left the cafeteria and ate lunch in our room because of a scary phone call.

I love writing outdoors. By the pool, in a park… I also like my desk at home near a window and surrounded by inspirational objects. Once, on a visit to the spectacular aquarium in Durban, South Africa, I grieved that I could not return alone and with my writing gear. The underwater atmosphere is so other- worldly.

The sense of surprise and delight that we experience in many places, just floats away because we don’t write it down, we don’t size the moment keeping it as a treasure and see how it develops with time.
Your post is so inspiring Carrie. I would love to write under a bed, as soon as my knees cooperate, or in a treehouse where I would rather live than in my present house.
Keep reading and writing, eating ice cream, playing games and surprising all of us with good ideas in weird places.
Can’t wait to read COUNTING TO BANANAS, I am sure it is going to make me laugh really loud. I see that the same opinionated Banana is on the cover of another book: B is for Bananas.

Carrie,
What about a book in poem book about quiet places? Children with sensory integration challenges would like to discover all the places to go to get away from all the noises. Just like all the places you described to story write. Likewise places to quiet ourselves that are fun places to be. Sitting next to a pond, in a bathtub, at the library, under the bed, in the closet, in a fort, and in a sleeping bag with a quiet flashlight.

LOVE this idea! I live alone and was thinking just this morning how the lock-downs and social fears have isolated me even more. I almost never go out except to walk the dog (there are few level walks around here and both the dog and I are too old to keep climbing stairs and steep paths, so it’s the same walk over and over) and shop for groceries. I love that you got the title and then wrote the story! Sort of like Six Characters in Search of an Author except for picture books! Six Titles in Search of a Plot! Oooo… I may use that!

Counting to Bananas looks so sweet and funny, I look forward to reading it! And you are inspiring me to make a blanket fort and snuggle up with my dog in there. (How do you stay awake though…?) Now you have me thinking about writing a funny not-quite-rhyming picture book. 🙂 Thank you!

Oh hey! I’ve written in a museum before! 😎😎😎
It’s not exactly the same, but I had some of my best early book ideas while walking alone. I commute daily on foot, about a 30 minute walk each way. But in the last six months or so, I’ve taken to listening to audiobooks on my walk. I love that I can read more this way, but now I’m starting to think I might need to occasionally go back to walking in silence, to get those creative juices flowing.
Thanks for the inspiration, Carrie!

Weird places! I have written in the park…in my garden…in the car… Standing in line at Trader Joe’s, waiting at the DMV… It definitely felt weird to write while waiting outside a courtroom for jury duty but that “weirdness” definitely activates different parts of the brain that may otherwise be dormant. I love reading the origin of your book from the idea stage!

In our house growing up (and now with my kids) the couch pillow fort is a favorite and a NOT favorite. They start out cozy and get elaborate…and fall down to someone’s great consternation and dismay (okay fine, mine). Love the idea cultivating idea places. Thanks for the inspiration (and the visuals)!
