by Diana Murray
Inspiration is everywhere. It’s just a matter of tuning into it. And in order to do that, you need to switch on that part of your brain that reminds you to evaluate funny or interesting or poignant experiences and ask, “Could this be inspiration for a book?” If you don’t stop to notice it, inspiration can pass you by. Of course it’s also helpful to record things right away so you won’t forget. Official PiBoIdMo journal anyone?
Here are a few ways you can tune into inspiration:
1. Look to Yourself
When I wrote GRIMELDA: THE VERY MESSY WITCH, I started with the character trait of being messy.
Unfortunately, that’s a trait I am intimately familiar with, so I know how frustrating it can be. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked around the house wearing one flip-flop, desperately trying to find the other one. Once I had my inspiration, I cranked it up by making the main character a witch. That made the potential for messiness even bigger and more interesting. If you think about your own traits, maybe even flaws, you can get a lot of ideas that way. For more on this you can read my post from last year: “Brewing Up a Character-Driven Story.” And by the way, I thought up this story during the first ever PiBoIdMo (I think that was in 2009?). It got me a SCBWI grant, an agent, and a two-book deal. Yeah. Tara, can I just give you a big hug right now??
2. Take a Hike
CITY SHAPES was inspired by the long “hikes” I used to take around the city, back when I lived in midtown Manhattan. I loved the way the neighborhoods changed and discovering surprises around every corner. If you go out and observe your environment, what will you find? Maybe you’ll see a greedy squirrel trying to claim all the birdseed in the feeder? Or a raccoon riding on an alligator? (Seriously. Google it.) Scan your surroundings and see if anything inspires you. For a more specific challenge, you can also take the idea of a concept book (colors, shapes, numbers, seasons, etc.) and put a unique spin on it, perhaps pulling from your environment.
3. Observe Kids
This is a no-brainer. Kids are funny, full of wonder, and often brilliant. Watch them. Take notes. My own kids’ antics are a constant source of inspiration.
4. Admire Art
When I wrote GROGGLE’S MONSTER VALENTINE, I was inspired by an illustration. I was in-between projects at the time and my agent suggested that I look at a particular illustrator’s portfolio and see if anything caught my eye. Well, it did! And that’s when GROGGLE was born. And now that very same illustrator (the fabulous Bats Langley) is illustrating the book. So, if you ever get stuck, try browsing some portfolios online or head to a museum.
5. Watch TV
Didn’t expect that one, did ya? Yep, literally watching TV can also lead you to inspiration. However, you need to watch actively, not passively. In other words, keep your inspiration sensor clicked on. You never know what might strike you. In fact, NED THE KNITTING PIRATE was inspired by an episode of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations–a travel and food show with a smart and amusingly snarky host. The episode I saw was filmed in Sweden. There were these extreme snowboarders who were descended from Vikings, and one of their favorite activities was…you guessed it, knitting. They knit their own hats with pompoms on top and gifted one to the show’s host. Bourdain (kind of a tough, black-leather-clad New Yorker) was clearly not comfortable wearing the fuzzy, woolen hat. It was hilarious.
I was immediately inspired. Now, of course I’m not implying that you should COPY what you see on TV. I’m just saying, you can get a seed of inspiration and then make it your own. For more about mashing together opposing ideas, you can read my 2012 post, “Idea Mash-Up.”
I hope this helps you tune into inspiration…and RIP THE KNOB OFF! (Sorry, I just had to get that in there.) Now get ready to be introspective, explore your world, laugh with your kids (or someone else’s), browse illustrations, and binge watch your favorite shows on Netflix. And most of all…have fun!

Thanks for the post! I’d love to know what artists’ portfolios you’ve looked at online for inspiration (besides Bats Langley).

Hi, Ginger. If you click “portfolios” in the article, it will take you to the Writers House illustrators’ page. Also, if you have a specific theme in mind (for example, “seasons illustration”) you can do a Google search and then click “images”.

Actually, I should have put naps on the list! 🙂 If you rest but stay semi-awake, it is an EXCELLENT way to get inspired or solve manuscript problems. So, happy napping!

Diana, does writing about a witch or other holiday/seasonal characters automatically plug your book into sales only during that time period? For example, does the Messy Witch only get promoted during Halloween? Is that an issue at all?
Thanks for your post! I love witches, btw! 🙂
October 27, 2015 at 12:36 pm
Diana Murray
Yes, kind of. It needed to be a summer release, for example, because that’s always when Halloween books first go on sale. However, Halloween doesn’t get mentioned in the book specifically. If you look at books like ROOM ON THE BROOM, some “holiday” books do stay popular all year. Some people say holiday books are a tough sell. But it just depends. I think you should let your passion guide you and don’t stop yourself short because of potential marketing issues. Thanks for reading! Happy PiBoIdMo!

Such great advice, Diana! We all see these interesting happenings…they are truly the ingredients for a great story…but not everyone allows them to simmer…I think we often push them out to make room for the next thing that occurs. The key is to take these ideas and DO something with them…you did…and look what came out of that. 🙂 Congrats on all of your book successes. Thank you for encouraging us to do the same!

Thank you Diana! Yes we all have Tara’s back thanks to her devotion to this all important idea stage. So happy for you to have signed on for half a dozen picture books! Whoa! I too have had the pleasure of working with the lovely folks at Highlights/High Five. So are we going to meet Pickle in a book one of these days? Sounds like a great character or support casting to me.
October 27, 2015 at 3:06 pm

Yes, very grateful to Tara and I adore Highlights! Pickle doesn’t have his own book yet, BUT Grimelda does make a pickle pie. However, she uses pickle root as the main ingredient, not Pickle the goldfish. 🙂

October 28, 2015 at 8:18 am

Hi, Caroline! I know, writing does change the way you look at things, doesn’t it? I remember when I was experimenting with writing haiku for a while, it made me more observant about the little mundane things. For example, a bowl of soup with all the celery left behind. Anyway, thanks for dropping by!

It’s great to see someone expressing their reverence for television as a source of inspiration! While I can’t claim to ever have gotten a picture book idea while watching tv (it happens when I read all the time), I have always thought that my youthful tv habit really taught me a lot about humor, drama, and storytelling in general. It continues to do so today, regardless of the quality of the quality or content of the show!
One note for those inspired by illustrator portfolios: be sure to check and see if it isn’t an idea we want to keep for ourselves! Some of us are writers too.

GRIMELDA: THE VERY MESSY WITCH: Grimelda sounds a lot like me. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been late to something because of being messy. You’re right, Inspiration is everywhere. You just have to look for it. And if the idea sticks with you, take it. Kids say so many funny things. My first book is based off my son (didn’t do that we’ll with agents, so I’m sitting on it for a while)
This is my first year participating in piboidmo, so I thank you for the advice.

Carrying a notebook or some such is a great idea. I constantly get little flashes of inspiration but lose them almost as quickly. I just loved this post. I think making space to notice the inspiration all around us as we walk and live or view art or nature is so precious. What a beautiful tote bag. Love No Reservations and Bourdain. I also love that his show, and those extreme knitters were your inspiration at some point. what great ideas and easy todo. Once I had a knitting MS, the editor asked who knits anymore. I know lots who knit.
October 29, 2015 at 8:15 am

That’s funny! It’s actually regained some popularity, I think. Ever hear of “stitch n’ bitch”? (Pardon my language.) And there are definitely some modern pb’s out there that feature knitting. For example, “Penguin and Pinecone” (and others in the series). But hey, what appeals to one person may not appeal to someone else. It’s so subjective.

My husband works from home two days a week. Do you think I could ever make him understand that watching TV is my work when he doesn’t understand that wandering around the house talking to myself is also my work?

You’ve reminded me to pay attention, not just allow my inspiration to remain sidelined because I’m not on watch. Once a day I will remind myself to listen differently, look freshly, be aware .. Thank you.

Along the same lines as admiring art and watching TV, I’m a fan of listening to music for inspiration. Thinking about a story behind or beyond song lyrics has been effective for me.

Thank you Diana for sharing your ideas to catch idea and inspiration. I found my self is falling love with books especially because of their illustrations and their main characters. So I am glad we have a same point of view. Thank you for reminding me to always ask: “Could this be inspiration for a book?” to each moment or each thing that came to my attention.

Thank you so much for your insights, Diana! I do all these things when I’m stuck for ideas, but it’s good having someone say it’s okay to do these things. I find watching certain kid’s tv show helpful just to get a better perspective on a kid’s world. It makes it easier to get an idea for a kid’s book if you watch kid’s shows (though lots of other tv shows are great for ideas too).

Totally agree with you! I got an idea for a PB from the title of a country song … I used it as a jumping-off point and thought of words that rhymed with it. This was during one of the days when I’m driving my kids to every activity on earth. By the time I got home I had the book’s premise in my head. And now? My agent submitted it to six houses last week. 🙂

The way I interpret your words of inspiration is that we can place all of our senses on high alert as we trundle through our day and through our dreams. Make believe we have a Go-Pro type camera on our hat …… what would the camera capture? Now go and be a pro everybody!
