“I want to be The Hardest Working WO-Man in Show Business”
But I’m tired. Are you?
It’s been an insane few months in my life. My book, Louise Loves Art, came out September 9th! Then I went on a 27-day book tour.
When I sit down to work and I have A LOT of work…sometimes, I got ‘nuthin.
Sometimes we feel like we just can’t go on.
We can’t do no more.
But you can. You can get back up. Like James.
You can find it in yourself. You have come this far.
You can still dance and spin.
You’ve got more ideas inside of you, dig. Dig deep.
Throw off that cape! Pull yourself up.
Let’s channel a little James this year.
Watch this:
James Brown.
The hardest working Man in show business.
Even he just has to fall on his knees and ask… Please.!?!?
Please, please, please, please.
Let’s grab the mic, Wacom pen, pencil or hairbrush … and sing with……PAIN.
(back up singers in parenthesis) (PiBoIdMo peeps – that’s you)
Spoken like James:
This year I gotta dig a little deeper.
Ya see ‘cause I am tired.
I’ve been working so hard.
(So hard. )
So hard.
(So hard.)
Start singing:
30 ideas in 30 days.
(Who came up with this idea?)
11 more to go, you’re in a daze
(I need a shot of tequila)
Pencil in hand, butt in chair.
(I gotta find a new idea)
Ideas, I can’t find you anywhere
(need to get my head in gear)
Yeah, oh yeah, ideas, I need you so..
(Please, please ideas don’t go)
Please, please, please, please….
(Please, please don’t go)
Please, please, please….
(Please, please ideas don’t go)
Can you hep me?
Somebody hep me!
Please, please, please, please….
(Please, please don’t go)
Please, please, please….
(Please, please ideas don’t go)
Imagination is all gone
(all dried up, ideas are gone)
Why did you leave and do me wrong?
(you are fried, you can’t hold on)
Please, please, please, please….
(Please, please don’t go)
Please, please, please….
(Please, please ideas don’t go)
I wrote so many ideas down
(So you wrote some good ideas)
I used some adjectives and some nouns
(these sound like bad ideas)
Doesn’t matter, I got 30 ideas out
(ideas on the page it’s a start)
Makes me wanna scream and shout!
(Keep on going, you’ve got heart!)
I’ll come back to these ideas one day
(Don’t leave them up on a shelf)
Soon You’ll see me signing at BEA!
(don’t get ahead of yourself, do 12 X 12)
Please, please, please, please….
(Please, please don’t go)
Please, please, please….
(Please, please ideas don’t go)
Danny! I can’t do no more…
WAIT! C’mon….
Now JUMP BACK! You’re super bad! You gotta kiss yourself!
Listen to this:
Kelly Light is working hard out on the road with LOUISE LOVES ART while working on the second Louise book and the first Louise reader. Look for those next year from Balzer and Bray. Also out next year is JUST ADD GLITTER by Angela DiTerlizzi from Beach Lane Books. She’s got soul. She’s tired and she’s super bad.
You can win a signed LOUISE LOVES ART book and a “Holiday Louise” print by Kelly!
These prizes will be given away at the conclusion of PiBoIdMo. You are eligible for these prizes if:
- You have registered for PiBoIdMo.

Thanks for the musical interlude! When I saw that WO-man up top, I thought you were going with something from Mike Myers in SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDERER (an old favorite), but James Brown — aaaaaaah — much better way to start a day!

🙂 One way or another I’m getting 30 or more ideas. In years past I got them faster and sooner before the challenge was even up (and I’ve participated every year since the beginning of this challenge). This year I’ve been doing just that, working hard, hard, hard (with other challenges on top of this one). So this post really resonates this year. Thanks!

Fun post! Saw your book at B&N a few weeks ago. Congrats! As someone who’s holding down a full time job and doing this freelance gig on the side, I totally understand the tired bit! Everyone needs some encouragement to keep going. Mine comes from my husband. He always believes in me and tells me I’m going to make it! The other bit of encouragement comes from Edna Mode: “Go! Fight! Win!!!”
November 19, 2014 at 10:31 am
Kelly J. Light
BUT Edna said, “NO CAPES!” She would have smacked James Brown across the face!

Gotta dig deep indeed. Sometimes digging deep means getting your hands and knees dirty, getting your fingers and knees calloused, and planting that idea deep enough to be protected from the cold, so it can spring forth elements of unforgettable beauty that makes you wanna scream and shout…

I love the music analogy, Kelly. My favorite singers are the ones, like James, who give everything they’ve got to every single word. In that way too, it’s a little like picture book writing!
Because his birthday passed 2 days ago, I hope you don’t mind if I share my musical guru, Mr. Jeff Buckley belting it out in-studio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VH_djcUPhs0
Thanks for the inspiration, Kelly and James!

Don’t you think a lot of the greatest artists, musicians, writers, dancers…are who they are..and make what they make cause they breathe their life into their work..and bleed a bit when they share it with us? There is pain, or at least, discomfort in speaking the truth…. Jeff Buckley is a good example of that!
November 24, 2014 at 6:36 pm
BLAHM
Absolutely! Well said, Kelly. I find it especially powerful in music because of the art form’s immediacy. But I love uncovering that intense truth in all mediums, especially books, and often become a little obsessive when I do.
I absolutely adore “Louise Loves Art” by the way! I’ve got a 4-year-old daughter who escapes passionately into the drawing zone. And woe unto he who interrupts her! Thanks for taking the time to respond.

James Brown was certainly a hard working entertainer and performed his craft well. What a fun way of reminding us to not take the negative side of writing too seriously.

So I was sitting in the car repair shop, with my trusty PiBoIdMo exercise, when James Brown starts blasting from my computer! It was great, but I turned it off for the sake of those checking cell phone, watching tv, reading. So here’s another place where canting is going to have to! Love this challenge. Thanks!

When it feel like I’m scrambling for new GREAT ideas, I am reminded that they are there, just waiting for me to tease out. They’re truly limitless, the same way music continues to change and grow and new things emerge. There are always new lyrics/words and new tunes/illustrations. Thanks for the inspiration today.

We often can do more then we first assume possible, but breaks are necessary whenever we can get them, otherwise burnout can occur, I speak from painful experience here.
No offense to James Brown, but “The Carpenters” do it for me in the musical motivation aspect.
Sure, some of their best known non-love songs (which the romantic in me loves, too!) are on the sad side, but they’re inspirational as well. I strong advise anyone going through a hard time, ESPECIALLY those of under 30 (as I am at the time I write this) listen to
“Where do I go From Here?”
