You know that writing friend you have? The one you haven’t spoken to in you-can’t-remember-how-long, but you’re pretty sure it was pre-pandemic?
Yeah, her.
Call her.
Can you believe she hasn’t put out a new book in ages? Or that she hasn’t written anything new lately?
Well, I can’t believe it, either!
Tell her to stop being so selfish!
She’s keeping all her talent and creativity to herself and not sharing it with the world! She is selfishly depriving us of her genius! Her unique perspective! Her inspirational voice!
Once you tell her, she will thank you.
And then she’ll tell you to DO ALL THE THINGS.
It doesn’t matter if THE THINGS get published or not and make money or not. DO ALL THE THINGS just to do them. Because doing the things you do makes you happy. They don’t have to yield anything BUT JOY IN THE DOING.
There.
Now, wasn’t that call good?
Don’t you feel motivated?
She does, too.
Yay.
Pass it on.

I was just thinking yesterday how my little community of writers around me have made all the difference to my continued efforts in writing. No one “gets us” like we get each other. And no one can encourage us in the same way… thanks for the nudge. 🙂

Best advice all month! The importance of having a strong writing community cannot be stressed enough! I don’t have to wonder when the last time was that I spoke to “that writing friend” because I schedule time for them on my calendar just like I schedule my workouts. Once it’s on the calendar, I’m committed and would feel like a flake if I cancelled.

I love this! Such a simple concept. I read somewhere recently— can’t remember where— though it might actually have been in another Storystorm post! It probably was— anyway, it was Write Anything & Everything. I liked it so much, that I wrote it down, and taped it to my desk. So I feel this fits in with that as well. Do All the Things— I will! Thank you!

Thanks for the wonderful advise and reminder, Tara. Indeed, I often think about the concept of “why I write” — and agree, it’s because doing those things makes me happy.
“DO ALL THE THINGS just to do them. …They don’t have to yield anything BUT JOY IN THE DOING” is a great motivator and mantra to have and share with friends re. writing — and any other activity that offers such personal satisfaction!

Thanks for this important reminder to stay connected to our community, Tara. Just so happens I reconnected with my first critique group last night after almost a year. Some members had to bow out of writing for awhile for personal reasons and while we’ve texted and kept in low-key touch, seeing their faces and talking live brought me such joy and inspiration. No one can go it alone, especially in the this writing world.

After college, my best friend and I hitchhiked around Scotland, England, and Ireland and of course we had to kiss the Blarney Stone! Well, she never did, and I didn’t know that until very recently. Her reason, she didn’t want to lose her (very creative) writing skills.
Yes! I will call her as you recommended in today’s blog and can’t wait to hear her response! I know we will both be motivated!

Oh, I DO miss seeing and talking to everyone! I miss the conferences, for sure, but I would feel compelled to wear a mask the whole time and wouldn’t be able to tolerate it to that degree
When the inspiration strikes, I DO THE THINGS simply because THAT compels me 😀 Happy writing, all!

Oh, Tara, your sense of humorous truth hits my funny bone every time. I just pulverized my “guilt” for letting the dust gather on so many manuscripts while my creativity stayed idle. Bye, bye GUILT! I’m ready to sit in the chair and get back to work again. Sending you coffee vibes to get you going…

TARA: THANK you for INSPIRING us to INSPIRE others to “DO ALL THE THINGS.” To write ALL their stories. And in doing so, INSPIRE ourselves to do the same. THANK YOU for this MUCH-NEEDED KICK IN THE PANTS. My seat might be bruised, but it won’t affect the use of my hands to type away. You can type standing up, right!!!???!!! 😉 THANK YOU!!! YOU’RE AMAZING!!! And may all of you reading this go and “DO ALL THE THINGS.” Write ALL your stories. And may I do the same by KICKIN’ my rear into gear–and investing in a good donut seat cushion, so I can sit down again! 😉

Thank you for this. I had coffee with a friend today who asked, “why do you write?” I don’t have anything published, just a google drive full of stories and a virtual stack of rejections. I’m a little disheartened, so it was a good question.
Writing is my creative outlet and it fills me with joy. When I focus on my lack of publications, I feel deflated, but when I honor my desire to create, the possibilities are endless. Thank you for reminding me and helping me shift my focus for 2025.

At first, you reminded me of a colleague, Mark, that I met with once each month (yes, before the pandemic). We’d email each other some writing that we’d talk about when we got together. He was sometimes a brutal partner, but so was I. He hasn’t published for a while. I saw him briefly a few weeks ago.
After I read your post, I wrote a note to myself in my journal to email him about getting together again and I wrote his initials: ME.
As soon as I saw his initials, it reminded me that I needed to look in the mirror and talk to myself too. Get going! Do all those things you’ve been putting off. Get that genius warmed up again.
Thanks, Tara. YOU are a great motivator!

Oh Tara! You know how we assume ours is the extra voice, the unneeded insight, the latecomer trying to present ideas that have already been brought to fruition! But you know what, after a year and a half of regular critique groups, there are sone who haven’t shared anything in a while… I’m going to call them right now!

Doing All the Things. Kind of a recipe for living a joyous life in general and isn’t that what we want kids to experience through books and take away for their lives? Hell yes! But we forget. And that’s why we need you. Tara. Thanks. ❤️

Remember, too, to treat your creative self as you would a creative friend (i.e. kindly).
I love this Amanda Gorman quote, esp. the last line:
“I think if I could go back in time and give myself a message, it would be to reiterate that my value as an artist doesn’t come from how much I create. I think that mind-set is yoked to capitalism. Being an artist is about how and why you touch people’s lives, even if it’s one person. Even if that’s yourself, in the process of art-making.”
Poet Amanda Gorman, in “7 Questions, 75 Artists, 1 Very Bad Year“, The New York Times

Creating for the simple sake of it is important. Plus even if a manuscript never gets published, it has made an impact on some reader: critique partner, family member, an editor who declined but still read your art, and one can never know how that changed the world. Keep creating everyone!

The article is “write” on. The biggest joy I have as a writer is when I send out any of my work (micro, short story, full chapters fiction or PB) to a contest, a query response, a beta reader, or to friend on a thank you card. The joy comes from the notion that somebody read my writing. Something I thought up, taken from the air or nudged by a muse or words I heard a child say while being inquisitive in a grocery store. The words might not bring money or fame back to me. But I know people have read my work. And they smile. Which is the biggest complement I can receive.

What great advice to call that friend you haven’t heard from in a long time and who should share her talent, imagination, genius! If I had such a friend I would certainly call her ASAP.

Thank you, Tara. I will be calling a writing friend, who I text instead of calling. It’s about time. I so appreciate the inspiration here. You have an incredibly adorable knack of saying and nudging the most important piece of advice. As writers, we get so used to writing and texting, that we have to speak and encourage and be encouraging to our fellow writers. We need to make time for that human connection and be less isolated and help others not be as isolated. Huzzah, Tara!

Thank you. Calling a neglected writer friend is a great idea. But your post could as easily have been about voice: “Yeah her. Call her.” I could, literally, hear the voice saying that. Out loud. Yay! 🙂

Thank you for your boundless positivity, Tara. You’re a straight shooter and that makes us believe. I contemplated putting my writing away in December – but here I am. Finding the joy and redefining “progress” is important in this business (because it is a business).

Hi Tara, about 20 minutes ago, I saw the name of a writing friend I have. She had commented on a STORYSTORM 25 post and I did too. I scrolled to find her name again. I wrote a comment to her on her posting asking about her writing career. I apologize if I misused this forum, but it felt good to reach out. Is there a better way to share a hello?
Thank you for this blog. I feel motivated. and I am writing.

I’m literally doing StoryStorm this year (as well as sending out queries for the first time in years) because I saw a friend I hadn’t seen in a long time and they asked me, “Are you still selfishly hoarding your words and depriving the world of your stories?” I literally hadn’t thought of the way my words might touch others, even though I can so clearly see how others’ voices are needed in this world. So I am actively and intentionally reminding myself daily that my voice doesn’t just matter, it is Important to Someone. And hiding my stories away is selfish. 🙂
