It’s Day One of Storystorm 2025!
Hooray!

From PARTY ANIMALS, illustrated by Anna Raff
You remembered, right?
Did you put it on your Google Calendar?

Don’t despair if you didn’t. I admit, I’m not the most organized person, either. I suppose it’s those creative genes that make me a whirlwind, haphazard mess. Every year when I get through Storystorm, I marvel at how I accomplished organizing it. Because “Tara” and “organized” have never gone together. It’s more like “Tara” and “slapdash” around here. My husband encourages me to plan things out, but I can never get my act together.
This is why I adore Google Calendar. I can take two seconds to throw something on it and then I look like a genius. Like when I start a free trial subscription of a streaming service—I mark the calendar a few days before it expires so I receive a reminder to cancel before I get charged.
I also color-code entries. All my school visits are banana yellow so I can easily flip through the weeks and see when they’re coming up. Doctor appointments are basil green. Deadlines are tomato red.
Perhaps, like me, you play Wordle. (Allow me this quick diversion, as it does have a point.)
December 30th’s word was STARE.

And this is what I want you to add to your Google Calendar: time to stop and STARE out the window.
You see, daydreaming is typically something we do when we’re supposed to be doing something ELSE. In a boring lecture? STARE out the window. Washing the dishes? STARE out at the garden. PBS Pledge Drive interrupting your show? STARE at the ceiling.
Nobody daydreams on purpose. Yet now, I am encouraging you to SCHEDULE IT ON YOUR CALENDAR.
Time to let your mind wander and play is essential to being a creator. So why leave that precious time to chance? Pencil in an hour every week (or however often you want) to do nothing but STARE. Leave a sign on your door that says, “Working!” Because YOU ARE!
I like to STARE in specific places. Like sitting on my front porch with a cup of tea. Ahh, it’s calm and relaxing. I have no real agenda other than to let my mind be. I don’t know where it will meander, but it is inevitably someplace surprising. (But don’t be so flabbergasted that you neglect to write it down!)
So go ahead, schedule a STARE session.
Bonus is that you can color-code it in any hue you wish.

More than you want to know about Tara is here.

Thanks for the reminder about how powerful a pause can be, and for the idea that it’s worth scheduling. Once the sun rises, I’ll spend a little extra time staring out my window at the birds and whatever else appears. Just anticipating that makes me feel a bit more relaxed!

It definitely feels hard to justify mind wandering time because it feels frivolous, but it’s also the only way to allow brain space for idea generation!

I like this perspective. I am no stranger to staring into space but it’s usually to ponder something or take a break from something or observe something. But to schedule 15 minutes a day for ‘mind wandering’ is a great idea and can certainly be justified with a little practice. I’m in! Thanks, Tara!

I am beginning this year with more permission to STARE: See The Art ‘Round Everywhere. Yes I just made that up! But I do find it’s always when my body is doing one mindless thing that my brain comes up with ideas. So I’m gonna write that on a note card to remind me!

What a great way to start off Storystorm 2025! I also just rearranged my studio/office/working space so that my desk is a prime position for staring out the window! Of course, I mostly stare at a building, and can’t really see inside the windows but, it is better than a wall. And of course there are plenty of places to stare around my apartment as well.

It’s funny (haha…sad) that we have to schedule time to daydream. I, too, love a good cup of tea on the porch listening to birdsong, staring off into my wooded space. Once, I was supposed to be off on a writing retreat with friends, but I became very ill on the way and had to return home. Weak, recovering, I huddled under a blanket on my own front porch sipping ginger tea and realized I was pleased to have no expectations other than to do just that. I wrote some very strange and wonderful poetry. Sometimes quiet staring is just what we need!

Tara — Thank you for the suggestion (and permission) to stare and daydream! It’s hard for me to do, let alone schedule, due to a childhood incident.
I was a quiet, shy kid who always did whatever the teacher said. I can vividly recall being chastised by my first grade teacher for routinely “daydreaming out the window” after finishing all my work before the rest of the class did. I felt incredibly embarrassed and ashamed–as if I’d been misbehaving. Her words left a lifelong impact, even though I was simply averting boredom as I waited patiently for the next lesson or activity!
So here’s to better-late-than-never staring, daydreaming, cloud watching and, hopefully, the host of ideas that will pour in from such activities.
Thanks for all of the time and effort that goes into your annual production of Storystorm and the distribution of all the wonderful prizes. It’s truly appreciated.
PS. I’ve been playing Wordle daily for nearly three years. I quickly settled on STARE as my starting word. So, I finally scored a “hole in one” two days ago!

I totally get the genius feeling of using Google calendar…except I use my Apple/Mac calendar instead. It has been very helpful. (But you reminded me to add this great tip to my newsletter that is going out this afternoon 😀 ) I’m a fan of staring…I end up working in our living room for the huge windows so I can stare blankly out the window at the sky.

STARE: “Still To Awaken Real Excitement” in the moment…in living…in whatever the day offers. Tara, my first act of this New Year Day was to STARE out our bedroom window, panning the yard decorated with dove feathers and pine needles. I thought of how my ideas when drafting a new story end up in disarray like fanned out feathers and scattered needles. Then read your post and laughed! My STARING did have purpose. Imagine that! Wishing everyone the best of first days in 2025.

Tara, the results can be actually pretty fulfilling when we allow our minds to wander and stream. I love when there’s surprise and “aha!” with the kinds of things that come into it, or notice, or realize. Actually scheduling “STARE” on a calendar, all by itself, could send an uninformed mind reeling as to “WHY would someone write ‘STARE’ on their calendar?!” hehehe Here’s to daydreaming dates! 😀

I still haven’t gotten used to using any other type of calendar than a paper one – which is only good if you remember to write things down. My husband is urging me to use the one on the phone but you can’t stash papers in between the pages with these electronic models. Have a party invite in May. Whoosh, invite goes into May. Doctor’s script in Feb. There is goes. I don’t lose papers. Or at least as many papers.
But STARING into space and seeing where my imagination takes me. I can definitely do that. I’m glad I cleaned and organized my cabinet of office supplies before I read this. Now … it’s … time … to …………

I practice two kinds of staring –
At the birds outside my kitchen windows and/or at the pond in warm weather.
At my toddler granddaughter whenever I get a chance.
Both kinds take me out of myself to just look at what I see – something delightful, invariably interesting, often peaceful & happy, always evoking gratitude and frequently sparking my muse.
Love staring!

I don’t schedule STARE sessions, but I often have them while watching the view from my office window. I enjoy observing the animals in the spring, summer, and fall. Last fall, a neighbor played a trick on the construction workers building a large house nearby.
We live in the mountains in a very small town. Our road is a dead end, and the adjoining road is private. Many workers used to drive down our road because the project manager refused to pay for the longer route, claiming it would add an extra 0.09 cents.
In response, our neighbor posted a “DEAD END” sign at the front of the road and created a blockade with chains and rope where the private road begins. The following day, the workers started arriving at their usual time, between 6 and 8 a.m. I kept track of the number of workers who drove past my window, turned around, and came back. My husband, who was in on the prank, stood by the road to ensure they adhered to the 10-mile-per-hour speed limit. It may seem harsh, but they were damaging the road, and some of them were driving between 20 and 40 miles an hour, which scared the wildlife.

I stare a lot! Now to convince my wife that I am working!
In fact, this morning at 3am as I lay in bed willing myself to sleep, I stared at the ceiling and three story ideas came to me! Completely unintentional, but then I realized it was officially Story Storm Day and I am already 3 stories up; until I woke up and could only remember 2! LOL

My friend and I (another picture book writer) like to talk about adding “padding” to our schedules. “Under-scheduling” is actually just SANE scheduling. A great way to get out of RUSHING is to add a lot of padding to your days.

I was the kid who got into trouble for daydreaming in school. In fact, my mom was called about it. I WHOLEHEARTEDLY THANK my AMAZING mom for encouraging me to continue to daydream! And I THANK YOU now, TOO, Tara! I LOVE the idea of scheduling this on our calendars, because it is IMPORTANT to our creative process. It REALLY does need to be a set priority. And to be able to justify it as part of our work . . . LOVE IT! SO THERE, to my first-grade teacher with no imagination!

I’ve gotten too old and/or too busy to keep all my appointments straight in my head like I used to. I think I accomplish the benefits of staring time when I go running. I listen to music and let my thoughts and feelings wander. Sometimes I send a question to my subconscious at the start of a run and wait for an answer to emerge. But one thing I’ve avoided doing, despite the repeated pleading of the universe, is to schedule time to meditate. I feel like your post is adding to the message that I should no longer delay incorporating it into my life. Thanks.

My word for this year is “Surrender.” To “stare” seems to fit well with my goal to surrender this year – surrender to the need to stare as a part of my creative side. Thanks for the reminder that it is wonderfully acceptable to just sit and stare and let the mind wander in this busy world of ours.

I find I can easily fill time voids with nothing. Waiting at the doctor’s office? Play on my phone. Etc. Then I realized I wasn’t letting myself have that time to be bored. Now I force myself to stay off my phone and be bored. My brain needs that rest time to be unplugged to create. It’s so easy that overlook these days. Thank you for the reminder!

oh I’ve tried online calendars it just doesn’t work for me. I’m the paper calendar type! But I can still day dream when I look at all the filled in dates or maybe it’s a few days where there is nothing there. Happy New Year!

I realised a few months ago that I had forgotten the thinking part of writing. I was so busy trying to ‘do’, I forgot to dream. It’s definitely part of my plan for 2025. Great way to kick off Storystorm!

When I start staring at the computer towards the end of the day and realize I’m not working anymore, that’s my queue to quit a bit early…but now I guess I’ll keep staring and wait for inspiration!

Storystorm got away from me last year…I’m not sure what happened…maybe it slipped by me because I don’t use Google calendar, although Google keeps asking me if I want to! I love your idea of color coding – and I do Wordle also (and so do my son and daughter – we all share our scores on a text chain – and always try to one up the others.
By the way, the theme for NCTE 2025 is DREAM BOLDLY…so I really appreciate your mention of day dreaming…wonderful things happen when we let children (and ourselves) day dream.
Happy New Year, dear Tara!

One of the most interesting things I’ve learned about writing is how down time, quiet time, daydreaming etc allows your mind to make connections or pull ideas out of your subconscious. It’s pretty amazing when it happens.

I needed this post SO much right now! I just spent a few evenings seeing my favorite band in concert, my happy place where I let my mind wander. Thank you Tara-
My desk is in front of a window to my backyard and I stare out the window many times a day- great inspiration! This is a forceful reminder of why I should probably not act on the urge to move my desk to a bigger spot in the basement, even thought it offers more space. Staring out a window into nature is way more worthy!

New Day with sunrise and mountain peaks worth longer looks – staring sparks a word or relaxes to think about nothing. Why do I find calendar reminders limiting? Thanks for StoryStorm.

As I was in the car, passenger here, I stared out the window and watched a crow fly. It made me think, Hey! It’s clapping in joy while soaring over the trees and looking for a snack? it’s crow BFF? That got me thinking!
I wasn’t sure if I added my comment yesterday morning before we left, so here’s my second one for New Year’s Day!
Cheers!

LOL, What a great way to start Storystorm (and the year), I start every day opening the window blind and taking in the view for 5 minutes. It grounds me, and the birds are always so busy. Thanks for the permission! Looking forward to enjoying the view more often throughout each day.

Love this idea to be intentional and schedule staring/daydreaming! I read a meditation strategy somewhere about letting our minds be bored – thinking about nothing for up to 1 min then increasing the time to create head space and to refresh perhaps?

I love this so much! Staring is such an important part of writing. This is why we purposely do not allow our kids to be entertained every second. Being bored is when the creativity happens! But as a busy adult, can we remember the last time we were bored? Thank you for the reminder! 🙂

I love to stare out my window – sometimes I watch how the light changes (especially dynamic from pre-sunrise to when the sun is up). Some days I marvel at how the clouds gather in the river valley and then roll up the hill. And I always take breaks to stare at snow (or rain) falling … it’s meditative, too.

Giving myself permission to not be “productive” is hard for me (I’m working through it). Thank you for not only encouraging me to daydream, but to put it on my calendar. By adding it to my “list of things to do,” I won’t feel guilty for making space for daydreaming and letting my mind wander.
I also just had an ah-ha moment thanks to your post. I’ve gotten in the habit the past few months of throwing on a podcast or audiobook anytime I do a menial task. Turns out, I’ve had less story ideas during this time period too. I’m excited to schedule in daydreaming and making time to listen to my thoughts instead of just the thoughts of others.

I often find my “stare” sessions occur just before I fall asleep at night. One thought jumps to another until they finally begin to calm down for the night. When a book idea begins to jump on my brain, I quickly turn on a little light and jot it down. For by the morning, it has surely jumped right out of my head.

It’s kismet that your first post is about staring and letting your mind wander. Kismet because my New Year’s intention (I don’t make resolutions because the pressure is too intense and I feel bad if I fail.) is to PLAY more. Play with words, paint, music, with my family and dogs and friends. I’ve become such a grumpy old lady. So I’m gonna play and stare and wander and enjoy the adventure of it all. Thanks Tara!
PS I’m crazy disorganized too.

I often “stare” with my eyes closed at night before I go to sleep. I just let my mind wander and room and see where it ends up. This is not something I schedule; it’s just something I do. If I come up with a good idea, I write it down so I don’t forget it.

Isn’t it amazing that we need reminded to be creative and to daydream? One of the best skills of my youth put on the back burner in life as so many other things come our way to manage and to do! It’s a nice red carpet roll out to start the new year and such a gentle nudge to reconnect with the parts that may have been packed away for too long! – Thank you for setting the tone

Isn’t it amazing that we need to be reminded to engage in one of the best past times of our youth? It’s amazing that as we grow and evolve into different versions of ourselves some of the things that get buried or put in the back burner! What a great reminder and gentle nudge to dust off some of the best parts of ourselves….. the ability to daydream without a looming responsibility or task taking priority. Thank you for setting the tone in such light Tara!

Thanks for the reminder to give ourselves time (and permission) to daydream! As a type A, if my fingers aren’t clickity-clackiting, it can feel like I’m not working, but writer brains need that space to wander.

I love that you aren’t lamenting your slapdashery self, just recognizing it comes with the creative territory and require a healthy amount of color coding and planning to manage. Thank you Tara!!

I love the idea of scheduling these moments! I use Google Calendar for a lot too, so it will be easy to add this. I will also try the color coding. Great idea! I do my best thinking while driving, which I guess is staring out a window. Lol. I do have to remember to write things down when I get to my destination though. I will add time to stare at home, so I can write my ideas down immediately and not lose them!

Oh, yes! I STARE all the time. From a spot on the couch I look out a window to the tops of trees. The look changes with the seasons. Just the other day a dark-grey cloud shaped like a submarine with someone riding on top went by. Sometimes it’s green. Sometimes it’s barren. Sometimes the trees sway in amazing rhythms. The STARE takes me out of my current situation to someplace new and relaxing. Ideas do flow. Thanks for “organizing” STORYSTORM and I look forward to a lot of amazing ideas to come.

Daydreaming is a part of my everyday routine; watching the dog in the backyard, at red lights, waiting for the kettle to boil, waiting for computers to boot up. Plenty of time for delightful departures from workaday thoughts.

Currently on holidays at the beach – have spent the past few days staring at the ocean, at my extended family (in a non-creepy way) and at country folk (again, not in a creepy way…). I’m already feeling relaxed, refreshed and a smidge more creative. I can see how staring can can unlock the imagination. Thanks, Tara. (Also, ‘crane’ is my start word for Wordle too!)

I am so good at reminding other people to take time to feed their creativity–to take time to daydream and relax and “do nothing” for a bit to recharge those creative batteries and let the ideas settle in. But I’m not so great at taking my own advice. So I’ve started adding “Give yourself permission to relax” as one of the top items on my To Do list every morning. Because I need that. It’s important to take time to just STARE. Daydream. Relax. Every single day. (Thanks for reminding me to put it on my to-do list!)
