People sometimes talk about inspiration as if it’s something that only strikes at random. I find that inspiration is more like the graphic I created for this year’s Storystorm: seeds that might bloom into something beautiful and luminous.

My illustration for Storystorm 2022!
Our published books are the result of a million tiny adjustments and years of persistence. My guided journal: GROWTH: A JOURNAL TO WELCOME PERSONAL CHANGE (Roost Books) took seven years from my initial concept to publication, and I know a lot of us have similar stories of our long haul efforts.
However, inspiration seems like almost the opposite: It’s the whimsy and spontaneity that propels us to get us started in the first place.

Early sketches of GROWTH, and the final journal published 7 years later.
I’ve participated in Storystorm for *years* (with many thanks to our brilliant host Tara)! Spontaneity plays a big role in what I love about Storystorm: I love how accessible and quick the prompts are. I also love the time constraint of the month of January!
It’s easy and fun to commit to a daily practice that takes just minutes each day but gives our creativity momentum with 30 ideas right at the start of the year.
So, let’s talk about how time constraints and spontaneity work well together to inspire
I write in my journal, draw in my sketchbook, and take a walk every day. The artwork and stories I make are created with ideas generated during these practices. Think doing this kind of thing is a massive time commitment you don’t have time for? I used to think that! (Even though hours can get sucked into social media or TV without my noticing the passage of time…)
One day, I set a timer and discovered it only took 15 minutes for me to loosely fill a page with drawings.
It took only 15 minutes to walk around the block.
A lot can happen in 15 minutes!
Do you have a timer in your home? Grab it for this prompt!
(Even Googling “set a timer for 5 minutes” will start a timer in your browser!)

I use this timer that startles me to push myself to draw or write 15 minutes at a time.
We’re going to go on a quest for inspiration that will take you 15 minutes total.
Prepare to set that timer three times, 5 minutes for each round.
Round one:
Go on a scavenger hunt around your home. Look for any object that feels like it sparks a feeling of curiosity in you. Bonus points if you step outside! Gather up these objects and bring them back to your writing space. Take every part of 5 minutes to do this!
Round two:
Draft a list of the possible ways these objects might be a part of a story you’d tell. Take all 5 minutes to do this. 5 minutes might feel longer than you think, but stay with it and generate as many ideas as you can until the timer goes off.
Round three:
Set a timer for 5 minutes and draft one of those ideas into something legible: something you can build upon – something someone else might be able to read. If you feel adrift, focus on writing a short poem or haiku.
When you have a sliver of time in your day, spontaneously set a timer with a goal to get creative and see what’s possible!

Thank you Susie for some timely suggestions! I like the idea of using the timer in the idea process as I sometimes get sidetracked. I think too that gathering things from your immediate surroundings is very interesting. It’s amazing how you can suddenly look at things you see every day in a creative way! Thanks!

Thanks, Susie! This is such a fun, active way to discover ideas. What caught my eye while doing this exercise this morning was – the snow outside! I was still in my slippers, though, so I didn’t go out to bring any in. Perhaps I should have – that could be a story in and of itself!

Definitely going to try this. It sounds so fun! Side note: Using a timer often helps me when I’m having trouble getting started on working on revising or drafting anything. Just need that impetus or motivation to start. Ten minutes better than 0 minutes!

I love the idea of the timer. It sets a concrete boundary instead of a meandering time. I am a doodler. I have noticed from time to time that I keep repeating certain doodles. I have come to believe that it is a subconscious way of building layers to a story. BTW I was inspired by the Storytime notebook cover. Thank you for it. I own one.

Susie, being outside even for 15 minutes with “life” is inspiring. You’re spot on when you say we DO HAVE THE TIME. I almost ruined my body by sitting way too long writing at my desk. I have really moved so far forward in the last year, just by remembering this. I used to think I needed 2 hour stretches of quiet to write. Then I had a kid and realized it would be another 18 years before I had that ever again! So I got better at squeezing in short times, but with more regularity.

Nice post, Susie. Unlike many of my fellow Storystormers who are working at home (or somewhere “out there”) and raising kids, I am fortunate enough to be retired with a grown family and plenty of time to write. Sounds wonderful? It is, most of the time. Without the urgency created by time constraints, however, I find my writing sometimes ends up flat, stale. I find that limits often encourage my creativity. It’s why I love writing traditional 5-7-5 haiku. When you can only have a certain number of syllables, word choice is not only important but often requires real out-of-the-box thinking. Long story, short: I’m going to try the timer thing and see if I can’t wrinkle up my flat writing a bit.

Susie, I’m working on getting back into the habit of capturing and recording ideas, and your fifteen minute timer idea will be a help. I used to allow seven minutes during my noon “hour” for a free-write time each workday. It was amazing how much could be done in seven minutes, and how it would begin something that I could return to and develop. Circumstances have changed a great deal for many people over the past two, to three years. Putting time frames back into place may be of great help to many people. Thank you!

I aways thought, five minutes isn’t enough time to get anything done. I guess I’ll try your method and see. I like the idea of collecting things from around my house to help get inspiration. I have to many “things” it’s going to be hard to pick only a few. Thanks, Susie, for a unique idea.

Love this prompt! I honestly feel like writing can sometimes feel like going to the gym…half the battle is just showing up, but once I’m there, I feel so good and glad I went. I love the idea of using a timer to “force” myself to focus on the writing for a short period of time. All to often I use the excuse that I “don’t have enough time” to write, but the truth is, usually once I sit down and TRY, even for a few minutes, inevitably SOMETHING creative comes out of me. It’s magic! Thanks for the tip and congrats on all your success!

It’s true–so often we can put off for eons (practically) what would only take 5 minutes or less to knock out. 🙂 Human nature–but such a good reminder that we’ve got *12* blocks of five minutes each in even just one hour! 🙂 There’s more time than we often let ourselves believe. Best of luck on your journal launch.

Round 1 – Completed!
I have sooooo much to write at this moment however will try to keep it short!♡
My ten year old daughter also got engaged into the activity!
We had some fun!
What sparked me was finding a teeny tiny toy soldier charm.
It looked like he had been abandoned all alone on the top shelf!! (♡top shelf= floor)
A strange synomyn my kindy teacher taught me all those moons ago when i was in school..
My bonus point in Round one was finding plant pots and seeds outside.
You are right as if by magic ideas are already in the making-Thank you!!
It is so easy to believe we do not have enough time.. I was worried after a few personal commitments this last week I would n’t have time to comment on all the daily blogs but I am keeping this promise to myself and I am so grateful I am making time.. Not only do we have time but to make time Feels Great!!!
I am looking forward to getting my copy of Growth.. so excited for the gold nuggets of wisdom to be read..
Now as for the juicy timer.. its already on my shopping list!
Bye for now – sending blessings to you ☆

I love this approach for creating new ideas. Even yesterday, walking on the beach during low tide allowed me to explore new places I had never been able to get to before and find new things, including openings in walls, giant starfish, and different views of the normal scenes. Inspiration is all around and just taking a moment in time will definitely help get your creative juices flowing. Thanks for inspiring us.

Love this prompt! I’m completely chronically challenged so my concept of time is always… distorted, flexible, or fleeting. I like the idea of synchronizing with a timer so I can make a regular creative practice that really doesn’t take too long. Unless I can’t stop…

Spontaneity, persistence and practice. Thank you, Susie, for sharing your wisdom and for showing how much is possible in 15 minutes. I often set a ten minute timer to get me started with writing. I love how you’ve broken your prompt into 5 minute rounds to see what is possible in a sliver of time while offering concrete steps to follow through. I LOVE this, as a teacher, I use “Quick Writes” all the time with my students, it’s a great way to get the ideas flowing! We’ve done the ‘scavenger hunt’ everyone brings one item that means something to them. But I twist it by rotating the items and the kids have to be inspired by someone else’s meaningful item.

Some years ago, a friend told me about the “pomodoro method” of getting work done. She’d set a timer for 20 minutes and work straight through, ignoring distractions. That’s what your post reminds me of. I found it very helpful, so I definitely see more scavenger hunts and pomodoros in my future. P.S. The timer looked like a tomato (pomodoro in Italian)
