Thank you for this opportunity to write about two of my favorite subjects, creativity and the power of an idea! This blog has inspired me for many years—how wonderful to start the year off with curiosity, looking around me for any bright, shiny, new ideas. The magic that in any moment, an imaginative spark will zing its way into my brain!
When people ask how I got the idea for WE MOVE THE WORLD, I share that it all stemmed from my FOMO (fear of missing out). In 2017, I was traveling and not able to participate in the Women’s March in Austin, TX. I missed it again in 2018, too. My intense FOMO got me thinking about why people walk for different causes. I researched other causes people walk for and wrote a manuscript titled WE WALK. A few revisions later, that manuscript sold to HarperCollins. (And then I rewrote it several times before we landed on the finished product of WE MOVE THE WORLD.)
One purpose for walking I didn’t include in the original manuscript was creativity. Researchers consistently suggest walking to boost creativity. So the next time you’re wondering where all the ideas are or how to craft that perfect ending, put on your sneakers and walk out the door.
A few questions as your feet hit the pavement:
- Do you need to reflect on a specific plot point of a current manuscript?
- Or do you need to just daydream?
- Is there a podcast that ignites your imagination?
- What happens when you indulge different senses? Or walk slower? Or faster?
- Do any of your neighbors inspire you to create a character? (Tread carefully here!)
- How can you get more curious? More playful? More open to your imagination?
A central theme within WE MOVE THE WORLD is that change happens with small steps. The more I share this message, the more I internalize that my own progress happens in small increments. This theme has been especially helpful to me as we navigate these tricky times. During the pandemic, I started walking our dogs twice a day—and it’s no coincidence that I’m working on a dog-themed manuscript featuring several of my neighborhood pets.
I am quite behind on my own Storystorm ideas this month, so I’m off to take another walk. One step at a time. One imaginative spark at a time. I wish you all abundant creativity, lovely winter walks, and zero moments of FOMO in 2022!

I recently read Shane O’Mara’s book about walking and how beneficial it can be – even or especially for creativity. I try to go for a walk whenever I have time and I, too, find that it helps clear my thoughts and spark ideas. 🙂

One step at a time! I agree with the power of the walk to activate the mind. I use this all the time, often taking whatever I am working on at the time and a pen. I jot down ideas as they come. If I run out of space on the paper, I use my Notes app on my phone. Admittedly, it is sometimes hard to decipher my writing when I get home, but usually there are scribbles all over both sides of the page – meaning I was very productive. Thank you for sharing!

I fully agree! I’ve always believed in the combined power of a walk and a notebook. And I don’t even have a dog! Walking, watching, listening, daydreaming, connecting…and jotting down ideas on the go means that you never have to start with a blank page.

One the things I love about walking is how breathing in the air (quite crispy this morning) seems to clear my mind and reset my brain, so all the things I was worrying about or dwelling on don’t seem as bad, giving me more space for creative ideas! Thanks the reminder!

Movement is important. I’ve been snowed in for several days now, and though it’s lovely to have this unexpected time away from school to read and write and cuddle with my newly adopted kitties, my legs are aching for a good stretch. But there’s too much ice to walk safely on my road. I trust the next warm up and melt off will be even sweeter when I can stride out on the river path once again, a pod cast inspiring me step by step.
Thanks for your post. Congratulations on your book!

I always love hearing about a book’s journey and how the “spark” becomes a full-fledged story and book 😀 Walking and being out in nature is good for us in so many ways, this being one of them! Wishing I could walk more, I’ll “walk” in my imagination too 🙂

II love walking!! 👌👍😁😊 I love this idea of walking. I used to walk everywhere and I do mean everywhere. I would put myself in another world as I walked, paying no attention to anyone. I want to get back to the state ad I will. Great idea!

Procrastination vs perseverance- when I’m stuck in a story I tend to procrastinate. But I go to another story and hone it a bit more, clear my head and start again.

Thank you so much, Kari! Taking a walk is such a rewarding idea in so many ways! I always feel better after a walk, and, I sometimes do my best imagining and reflecting and thinking when I am outside with nature and moving! You are right; when we are struggling or something has us frustrated or stumped, a walk is just what we need! I can’t wait to get outside and see what ideas come! All the best to you in 2022 also! Kari, I love your Move Method for brainstorming. It not only keeps our brains from atrophying, but energizes the body and spirit. Thanks for reminding us to be patient with our small steps when those giant leaps don’t come and self-doubt starts to grab hold. And…walking is an activity that we can do at any age. I enjoy how it keeps us connected to nature, neighbors and our inner selves. Plus it’ll burn off the holiday fat. Your new book is one that will be grabbed off the shelf. Inspiring theme! Sending you hope for many walks to spark continued success in your journey….

I too get so many ideas while walking! So much so I have bundled up my two kiddos (2 and 2 months) and glided down sidewalks of sheer ice this January. Thankfully, the kids don’t mind. They’re napping or singing songs in their stroller cocoon while Mommy battles the elements.

Thanks, Kari, for the reminder to “go take a hike!” Walking is one of the healthiest, most productive activities a person can do. My wife asks me to join her everyday, and everyday I hem and haw with one excuse after another. When I do agree to join her I love it — I feel more energetic and happier. I guess it’s the old adage about “the immovable object” that explains why deciding to get my butt out of my chair is the hardest part of the whole walk thing. Maybe adding “more creative” to more energetic and happier is just the impetus I need!

KARI: THANK YOU for the INSPIRATION to KEEP ON taking one step at a time. This has also been my theme to KEEP ME MOVING FORWARD each day–especially this last year. In fact, I haven’t changed my calendar picture for over an entire year, due to the INSPIRATION it brings me every day to KEEP taking one step at a time. It’s an illustration of a young girl, walking through the deep snows of a winter night, with only a lantern to guide her–one step at a time (it’s from the book: “Bushy,” also known as: “The Adventures of a Girl” (Artist, Cythnthia Westover, 1897)). THANK YOU for INSPIRING us to KEEP ON MOVING ON–no matter how big or small our steps might be.

I agree Kari! I walk on my lunch hour when I can, even if it’s just the hallways due to cold weather ( I’m in Michigan) but in good weather outside or at home on my elliptical. One of my CPs goes for a run. There’s gotta be a study showing the benefit. It totally works!! Thanks for your blog!

Walking my poor old pooch is a very slow process, but it allows me to look around at what’s close by while he sniffs and sniffs. I often see birds and plants along the road that I’d never notice if we were moving at a fast clip. Sometimes ideas are sparked on these walks. Other times details are noted for inclusion in future writing projects.

Oh Kari, all I had to do was think about going out for a walk, and I came up with a new idea! So do I still have to go for the walk? (hahahaha!). Seriously – I absolutely love going for walks, and if I ever get the chance to be on a walk by myself, I do love to use that time to think. The trick is to store ideas away that arise during the walk and get them down “on paper” as soon as I get home and before they’re forgotten!

Thank you ever so much for this! I really appreciate it! I’m so glad you wrote ‘We Can Move The World’. Our world needs this book & I can’t wait to read it to the Kindergarten children in my class! You’ve also inspired me to begin lacing up my sneakers again & get outside which is something I haven’t been doing lately! Thank you! ❤️

Thank you, Kari! Love the visual for the struggle. Walking has a magic power for me as well but you make such good use of it that I find this a great reminder to use the power of getting up and out to let the brain process next steps. Thank you, Tara, for asking Kari to post in Storystorm 2022.

I do end up getting creative and finding PB ideas when on walks. A great suggestion to move around and indulge the senses and see what sparks an idea by moving about in your environment and surroundings. Thanks!

Thanks for this post, Kari, and congratulations on your book! Walking always clears my mind. Your question “Do any of your neighbors inspire you to create a character?” made me laugh, since we live in the middle of a college campus between two fraternities! I’m sure I could get a picture book out of our unusual neighbors’ antics if I started paying more attention…

Walking is a great idea. I need to daydream, and I’ll have plenty of time to do that, as I am “training” to walk a race in my area in May. Bloomsday is one of the largest timed road races in the US. It’s 12 km, so I will have lots of time to daydream 🙂

Yes, wonderful idea – walking – Kari! It gets me out of my “frozen” space that gives me brain-lock and outside my mind can fly to trees, the blue sky, the frost on my stocking cap!

Kari, thanks for this post. The only FOMO I suffer from is what am I missing from NOT walking? For me, walking is fraught with danger – of falling – so when I do walk, I have to concentrate on remaining upright. So I rely on driving, sitting, and what I call BIB – bod in bed. I’ll be looking for your book.

Thank you Kari. We walk two goldens on our icy Vermont dirt road. Yesterday we said “hello” to a young man who was walking with ear buds. My husband said “he should take them off and listen to the quiet of the woods”. When it’s this cold, there is very little creature activity or sound of any kind, but our dogs never stop sniffing the road edges. What stories are left there by others? We can only imagine.

Small steps – this jumped out at me too recently, That if I break things down into small steps even the most daunting new program to learn, etc…. I can do it! And if I focus on the small steps, progress is made, and if I focus on the progress made, I feel good… instead of focusing the other way which is NOT helpful and IS harmful.

Thanks for sharing Kari, what an inspiring post!
It is so amazing that an annual women’s march, advocating legislation and policies regarding human rights, took you to research and write such a strong and powerful book.
Paring small steps in children’s lives with all the movers and shakers of the world is such an awesome concept.
As I read the book, I can imagine all the hours dedicated to gather so much information. The spread that hit me the most (because I did not Know about it): “We solve puzzles, we hold the key” to the left. And to the right: “The Native American Code Talkers using their own indigenous languages to communicate secret messages to allied troops, at the Korean War and the Vietnam War, saving thousands of lives.”
Walking, getting all those ideas flowing. I wonder if walking in a crowded city, seeing all the diversity, would generate more complex ideas than walking in a quiet neighborhood.
Good luck with all your future books.

That’s interesting about walking to open up creativity. Maybe especially helpful for physical learners, people who need to learn while their body is in motion. I know runners think about stuff when they run and it clears their brains. I would guess any fresh air would help you think clearer. Thank you

That’s interesting about walking to open up creativity. Maybe especially helpful for physical learners, people who need to learn while their body is in motion. I know runners think about stuff when they run and it clears their brains. I would guess any fresh air would help you think clearer. I’ve been taking hikes with a friend but I will have to pay attention to whether I have some great ideas after! Thank you

I love walking for ideas. I have written many poems, talked with my characters, and created comics based on my walks.
In the Mid-80’s there was a Hands Across America event that I wanted to participate in. It was even on my birthday. It also happened to be the day I graduated from college. I still wish I could have been at Hands Across America rather than at graduation.

It’s so true about walking and creativity. It doesn’t always work but nothing is 100%. I liked your comment about progress happens in small increments. That makes me feel so much better about spending an hour thinking about something and then 5 minutes writing it.

I love: “Change happens with small steps.” I totally agree. In fact, I wear a ring inscribed with the well-known quote: “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” although it should probably say “…with the first step” because that’s the hardest one to take. Thanks for inspiring me to keep stepping and moving in the direction of my goal of publication.

I recently ran a marathon and often did as you suggest as part of my training: I set myself a question to ponder during a training run. It was often quite fruitful. Not every idea panned out, but it was a way to get my subconscious mind talking to my conscious one.

Kari, I had not heard of FOMO before I read your post. It made me think of my loving dog that will get up from a dead sleep to follow me into another room in the house. He does not want to miss out. It reminds me of grandma moving from the city to a smaller town where we live, so that she does not miss out on time with us. The need for social emotional connection makes FOMO sense. Thank you for sharing that terminology.

I’m lucky to have miles and miles of walking paths in my community. There are definitely times I am in a hurry to get home to a notebook because I’ve seen/heard/conjured something that is a great story seed. And the cold air in my lungs helps clear my brain. 🙂 Thanks for the post.

I pick up my kids from school/daycare on foot, and it’s funny how a shape of a brick in the sidewalk, a falling leaf, or a passerby will inspire a story.

Let’s start with thanks for telling me what FOMO stands for. I’ve been just too lazy to look it up. Lol! I loved your post. There’s so many times as a teacher that I just do circles around the playground and think about my students and what they need or what I can do for them. There’s so much power in those walks. I need to do that more away from my job and more in my everyday or writer life parts. I reflect more than ever during those times. Happy walking! Thx for the post!

Just yesterday I vowed to resume walking regularly – there are nothing but positives associated with walking (unless maybe not looking before you cross a street!) and your blog post is reinforcing that I need to get my walking boots on and get out there!

Thanks Kari for reminding me about the joys of walking. It can be stimuli for creativity and seeing things differently. Throw in a few marches for a good cause and watch for what comes next. Thanks.

I see others also commenting on the chilly temperatures, also! haha.. I went for a small walk to the mailbox and to put the garbage by the road today. Even just a minute outside – even if it’s cold – is refreshing for the soul. Maybe tomorrow on my walk to the mailbox I’ll try to be more present and think creatively! This is a great idea to try in the house as well, though. Thank you for the idea!
