1. I like to start with a list. Lists are much less intimidating than paragraphs. You can use numbers, letters, bullet points, stickers. I sometimes change midstream.
2. I like to make lists of very random words, whatever comes to mind. It’s ok if some of them are repeats. You may find that the same word creeps in again and again. Be suspicious of this word. It may be telling you something.
3. Lemons…
4. When you are brainstorming, no idea is bad. Write it down. Sometimes I try to make a bad idea worse. Take it to the limit. You can always go backwards.
5. If you can’t think of anything to write, write how you feel.
6. I’m feeling hopeful today. I’m hopeful that some great picture book idea will land in my brain.
7. Look at your words. I mean really look at them. What shapes do they make? The “aha!” moment for my story occurred when I saw a turtle in the letter “u” of “stuck”. I like to make very rough doodles. It’s OK if you don’t draw, doodling is for everyone. Doodle like a Kindergartner with a sparkly crayon.
7.5 Say your words. How do they feel? Are they crunchy or smooth? Are they funny or serious?
8. Take your words to a different place. Sit on the floor. Do they look different here? Take them to the shower but only if your paper is waterproof.
9. Add things to your process that make you happy. For me that means colorful pens, stickers and tea. Tea is very important.
10. If you are really frustrated, take a nap. When you are half asleep, think about your words. Imagine them in a book. Don’t stress over this. Just read the book to yourself in your half sleep. Read them like you would read them to a child. You are the child. You are putting yourself to sleep. It’s ok, you are tired.
11. Ignore your words for a while. If you have terrible handwriting like I do, deciphering your words months later is half the fun.
12. Come back to your words after you forget them. What do they make you think about now? What questions pop up when you look at them?
13. Even if you write ONE word, you have written something. You deserve a nap, a sticker, a cup of tea, or whatever makes you happy.

It is great to hear that there are people who try to think of stories when half asleep. My favourite time is when I am invigilating exams. It makes time go by.

I’m all for taking a nap! I often find when I nap I’ll wake up with ideas, or even doing something on autopilot like washing the dishes allows my mind to drift into thought mode.

I teach four year olds and one boy ALWAYS drew lemons. There’s a story for kids in there Julia because you are delightful and child like. I’m going to Walmart today to buy sparkly crayons.

I love lists, it is interesting to suggest making a list when you do not know what will be on it. I have little people so glitter and sticker everywhere! Maybe they will help me make a list today. I think the words platypus and lasagna will go on there for sure!

Thank you for your thoughts on ideas and drawing or doodling in my case and letting ideas flow while you sleep. My freshest ideas are as I am starting to fall asleep and first thing in the morning. I will use my colored pens to help today’s ideas. I keep a notepad by my bed. But deciphering the writing in the morning is tricky-it does look like kindergarten scribble.

#11 resonates with me. It’s a good thing I like to solve puzzles. My handwriting leaves much to be desired. The more inspired with ideas I am, the worse it gets. I often come up with what may be a better idea when I can’t interpret my own handwriting! Thank you for today’s inspiration. P.S. I do like lemon chicken! 🙂

From one “Tea-Hugger” to another…THANK YOU, Julia, for your fun approach to smashing Writer’s Block when it happens. When I visit our local library, I jot down “BIG WORDS” that LITTLE MOUTHS say while playing with books and toys in the corner of the Children’s Room. These words keep me connected to how kids think and the way they use words. Sending you inspiration and energy for your continued success…

Creating a list can always be fun. Whether you are writing the words for a game or things to do or even for shopping, just writing the words forms growing thoughts in your brain that feed off of one another. I like the idea of using this method to create your own prompt list that may in fact turn into something different altogether. Thanks for this.

Lemons, crunchy words, smooth words, write how you feel. It feels like an Armor hot dog commercial, dog kids love to bite. If something stays with you that long, then the words are crunchy, funny, and lyrical. Write with fun words, write with fun feelings, write! I copied and pasted all thirteen. Now time to print and stick it on my wall. Great mindset to begin your writing day!

So good! I take my words to the bath. Sometimes I let them out while I distract myself with lots of candy. Even better if it is holiday-related candy that only comes once a year. I found so much of my process reflected in this post, but the parts that I’d be hard pressed to find words for. Like lemons. And stickers.

Love the idea about making a bad idea even worse. At the very least, it’ll make you laugh, and that releases the tension of not being sure what to write.

I love this post! It reminds me how to play with ideas and words and have fun with them. Let the story evolve organically. And I LOVE LISTS!!! Lists are my favorite. After all these years, I’m still “afraid” of doodling, but I’m committed to taking some art classes when the world is ours again.

Thanks for your list of ideas on words. Over the holidays, I rewatched a favorite sitcom, Seinfeld. I noticed how the character, George Costanza, had an impressive vocabulary. Each time George said a fabulous word I wrote it down. I have a very long list of delicious words!

1. Today will be about lists.
2. Bobolinks is the first random word that came into my head and then I realized I don’t know what they are. Turns out they are beautiful birds! That was a win!
3. When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.
4. !backwards go always can I .worse idea bad a make always can I
5. I feel very happy reading your post. Thank you, Julia Mills!!!
6. Look at the shapes in the words. I will work on this.
7. Say the words. Today they seem bubbly.
8. Figure out how to waterproof some paper to take in the shower.
9. Drink tea (check, that one was easy). Get some new fun pens.
10. Take a nap (check, also easy).
11. Ignore words for a while (ooh, I’m on a roll!)
12. Come back to my words later. Okay, that’s for tomorrow.
13. Wrote at least one word (check again, I am positively giddy. I had tea and a nap and don’t have any stickers yet so I will have to settle for a dried apricot or two)
So far, this is my favorite post of Storystorm 2022. They’ve all been great but this one really got me fired up.

Thank you, Julia, for great writing tips that I think will work for me – tea, lists, making a bad idea worse, writing how I feel, and writing in other areas of my home, inside and outside, other than my office. It’s funny that I’m always buying stickers or sticker books for my grandsons and now I think it’s time to buy one just for me.
Happy New Year and I wish you continued success with your writing and publishing.

Hi Julia, I enjoyed reading your post. Lists are powerful. I particularly liked the bullet 12 about coming back to the list after the words are forgotten. Some of my best ideas have come about that way. There should be an International day of Lists, they are so important to our lives – in infinite ways, and should be appreciated like a mouthwatering meringue on one of those yellow tangy pies 😉

I never thought about looking at the shape of a word, so now I’m off to make some lists! And doodles. And tea! (…and stickers. I don’t suppose I can make lemons, but lemonade will have to do.) Julia Mills,
I love the chicken illustrations.
The part about the tea is important to set the mood for writing. I am most comforted by Earl Grey Tea, hot with honey and oat milk. What is your tea of choice?

Julia, an interesting idea! I’m going to give it a try and see what I come up with. I love the tea and nap. Sometimes I fall asleep in front of my computer. Then, when I wake, I’m rerfeshed and raring to go. I also love your humor. Life is too serious, and we all need humor. Thanks for a funny and interesting post>.

Thanks Julia, this is all helpful! I am not a list maker, but when it comes to approaching a blank page, I’m totally with you–lists are way easier than sentences. And there is something reassuring about those numbers…way less ambiguous than words.

I’ve definitely had stories pop up from being almost asleep or really asleep. My favorite reminder was to think of how words feel – in your mouth, on the page – reading aloud for that.

Great list of tips! 7-I’ll add doodles for each word. Doodles help me flesh out my chracters and settings. 10- I don’t take naps but I dream about my characters. At times the dreams can be scary or hilarious. First thing in the morning or in the middle of the night, I jot down what I remember. Then reread my notes and analyze the meaning, and ask myself, do I have a story here?

I love how you used lists as a bridge into spending time with words and ideas, how you let words wrap themselves around you, hang out with you, tell you their story. It is in this state of being…being with words and nothing else (except maybe some tea and a cookie) where new ideas gently pop into our consciousness. A great way to become unstuck! Thank you!

I love the idea of trying to make a bad idea worse! I think that’s exactly the permission I need to banish my inner critic, ha!

This is not only funny and lemony, but choc-a-bloc with great ideas especially seeing where #4 can take us: “When you are brainstorming, no idea is bad. Write it down. Sometimes I try to make a bad idea worse. Take it to the limit. You can always go backwards.”

So many great ideas. And I agree, tea is very important. I especially connected with the idea of reading the story to yourself as if you are the child who is being lovingly read to sleep. Thank you!

POST! I didn’t intentionally format my comment this way, but it seems to fit your post well. I love this: “Say your words. How do they feel? Are they crunchy or smooth? Are they funny or serious?”

Fun post! Good tea and naps are the foundation of all creativity! I often fall asleep “reading” my story in my head and making adjustments. The trick is remembering what changes I made to the text when I wake up 😉
