by Dawn DeVries Sokol
I spent a few days in 2012 painting a utility box for the City of Tempe in Arizona, my hometown. Six artists were selected to paint utility boxes along the downtown corridor and I was one of them. My submission was the quote “Be the change you wish to see in the world” (Ghandi).
I used my lettering skills to paint the quote as a wraparound of the box. I met people, homeless teens, those who worked in the downtown area, and those coming out of their condos and apartments in search of their morning coffee. I started at 9 a.m. each day and watched as the intersection came alive with pedestrians, supply trucks, and shops opening.
But now I think the quote should be reworded to: Be the change you wish to BE in your world.
We all have moments we think very little of ourselves, especially as creatives. I think we should all take a moment to SEIZE THE DAY.
Seize the Day and Be the Change…geez, I’m getting cliché. But think about it for a moment. Just when you’re feeling down about yourself and your own creativity is the moment you need to run with it—take the bull by the horns and just CREATE. It’s really that simple. Be George Constanza in “Seinfeld”: Do or say the opposite of what you would normally. You might find yourself in a much better situation. Instead of wallowing in it, suck it up and get out of the pool. Will yourself to create. Even if it’s just making a mark, gluing down random bits of papers, writing a phrase here and there, whatever.
So, the next time you find yourself unmotivated, less than confident, majorly uninspired, and feeling like the last thing you could be is prolific, FIGHT IT. Don’t surf the internet. Don’t ogle other artists’ or illustrators’ work and wish it were yours. Don’t mourn your creative spark. Simply grab a pen, just an ordinary black felt tip pen. And doodle. Doodle on white paper. Pick a shape, your favorite shape, and repeat it on the paper over and over. Big, small, abstract, uniform, etc. Now shade some of them in, outline others, go back over to make them more elaborate. Just DOODLE. Doodle words that pop into your head along with the shapes. If anything, you’re making your own mark, feeding your own spark. Even if it’s rudimentary. Even if it’s extremely uninspired. You’re doing it. And that’s ALL THAT MATTERS.
Always told she would be a writer, Dawn DeVries Sokol earned a bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University’s renowned Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. But she yearned to create visually, and soon worked her way from editing newspapers to art directing magazines, such as America West Airlines Magazine—from which a feature she art directed landed in Print Magazine’s 2002 Regional Design Annual. For 10 years, she designed books for U.S. publishers such as Sterling Publishing, Gibbs Smith, North Light, Quarry, and The Countryman Press. Now a widely published author, artist, and illustrator, she lives and creates in her Tempe, AZ, studio with her dog, Lola. Dawn is represented by Louise Fury of The Bent Agency. Great post to get the creative process going. After reading it, I took a few moments to ponder on what I could do differently to improve my writing. I also looked at the Postcard Project. Very interesting. I might just order it today!

I love this post…the idea of doing the opposite and also just doodling and starting with anything! Feeding a creative spark reminds me of the story “Sam & Eva” by Debbie Ridpath Ohi, where the creative ideas get bigger and bigger. Thank you for giving me tools to get started!

I like this advice, especially during difficult times. Often, for me, creativity is a way to cope with the things happening around me. To cope with different experiences that weigh me down. So, pushing myself to be creative even when the skies are gray could also help me find the sunshine. Taking thus to heart.

Dawn, I love your utility box! How cool that you were chosen to paint it! I really like your rewording of what you painted, because those were actually words I had spoken to myself just days before. Now, off to doodle!!

I often find this advice hard to follow, if I’m stuck nothing comes out of the pen LOL. I like your suggestion to just pick a random word and start writing it to see what happens…that might help get juices flowing.

Yes! Doodling or creating anything physically with my hands usually gets those creative juices flowing. I love your electrical box painting—and your take on the quote, too. Thank you for sharing!

Oooh – first comment… Side effect of being in the UK, I guess…
This idea meshes really nicely with the one from yesterday. I see stories in pictures, I make pictures from stories. For me, both ways are good.
Doodle rectangles. It could be a gallery. It could be a garden. It could be a map. It could be the windows of an interesting house.
Doodle circles. It could be snow. It could be flowers. It could be eggs, if you pulled one end out. It could be coins, collected from all around the world. Or even the galaxy.
It doesn’t matter what shape you start with. Yesterday, from a page of shapes, a page of pictures was made; the beginning and the end; before and after snapshots; a blurb to hook for those who can’t yet read.
Today, a page of the same shape repeated; flowers, trees, clouds and sheep could start as the same simple doodle. A story born of picture.
Thank you.

What a great blog post. Once you start creating, it fires the brain up doesn’t it? But you have to make that spark, however tiny it may be.

The Postcard Project looks interesting, and your artwork on the utility box was beautiful! It is so easy to feel defeated about one’s work, especially when the agent rejection emails come twice in one day. However, I agree that you must keep charging ahead. Thank you for the pep talk! I was a prolific doodler when I was younger. I used to get into trouble all the time for doodling on the telephone directory or whatever happened to be present while I was on the phone – I didn’t even know I was doing it! I doodled on magazines, newspapers even the wallpaper once (mum was NOT impressed!) I still doodle a little but most of the time is spent on my laptop so it has curbed the habit…until today! I am going to re-awaken my inner doodler and see where it takes me! Thanks Dawn!

Doodles often become stories in my world. I have gazillions of doodle stories in journals, on envelopes and scrap paper. One day, when I’m gone, my children will open boxes in my closet to find my doodle stories. I wonder what they will do with them.

Very important advice! I’ve always steered away from doodling because “I can’t draw,” but I know that doing so and adding “doodle words” will wiggle loose some ideas. So that’s my plan today! Thanks!

I have Ghandi’s quote on a plaque in my bedroom for many years to wake up to everyday. I like the idea of turning the words into “Be the change you wish to BE in the world”. I think I’ve always kind of read it that way anyway. It’s up to us to choose our destiny and the impact is has on others in our world. You’ve inspired me to now move this plaque to my study where I write everyday. AND there is a hand lettering course being offered right here in my little Coronado Island…I am going to sign up t take it! Thank you for your words of wisdom…ps I am not an illustrator but thought this would be fun to try:)!

Thank you so much, Dawn. I am so inspired by your encouraging words and advice about how to ignite creativity. I love the idea of just grabbing a marker and blank paper and doodling anything. It reminds me of a drawing exercise we learned in college. Just make random lines on paper and then discover what is hidden among them. I can’t wait to see what pictures and stories I uncover!
Thank you again for the spark I’ve been needing!

Getting caught up in other things- catching up on tv shows and movies, surfing the web, playing on social media, etc- can be a great way to lead an unfulfilling life. I love your ideas of just doodling and writing words instead of sitting around and mourning your lack of creativity. Guess I’m going to have to start this once again and unplug from electronics.

A thought from a curmudgeonly history professor who aspires to write and illustrate for kids of all ages, but probably never will get anything published because they are curmudgeonly and forever looking up and mentioning references…but the phrase, so beautifully depicted by Dawn Devries Sokol, is a distillation of an idea of Gandhi’s with a complex history and possibilities for trajectories. In 1913 Gandhi indeed wrote: “We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.” (QuoteInvestigator,” Be the Change You Wish to See in the World,” 23 Oct 2017, https://quoteinvestigator.com/2017/10/23/be-change/). Some modifications and transformations later, there are many who interpret this far too individualistically, i.e. it’s all about personal change and inner work, unrelated to any need for social change or collective work (for critique, see Brian Morton, “Falser Words Were Never Spoken,” New York Times, 29 Aug. 2011, https://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/30/opinion/falser-words-were-never-spoken.html). Sokol’s engagement with the public as she created and shared her work, and transformation of the 1974-onward rhyming distillation to “be the change you wish to be,” is more in line with Gandhi’s social sense of this concept, which is genuinely inspiring and heartwarming. But since I am a curmudgeonly history professor whose writing and illustrating for kids probably never will get published, I’m going to spend some time this afternoon trying to doodle the longer quote, and try not to have it be completely visually/aesthetically unappealing ;). Thank you for sharing your beautiful work, inspiration, and thoughts, Ms. Sokol, and thanks to any readers for coming to my TED talk :-P.

What?? I think we are kindred spirits! I do use my letter writing as a tool to keep me “working”. Sometimes I decorate my envelopes and often I turn my letters into vignettes, especially when I write to children. I also have a huge stack of postcards, new and old that I release into the world on a regular basis. So I must check out your book . This is actually my resolution for 2022: stop, breathe and have fun. 2020 and 2021 were tough years (for everyone), and I lost my writing/creative inner motivation halfway into 2021 and I have not written a word since the beginning of this challenge. I will definitely start doodling and hopefully inspiration will come back! 🙂

Thanks Dawn for encouraging and inspiring us. I started doodling when accidentally I walked into a Zentangle class while heading to an exercise one. Most likely it was meant to be as it changed my life in many ways. Now I want to to try doodling leading to writing. “Do or say the opposite of what you would normally” is definitely something I have to experiment. I can’t wait to read your book.

A neighbor of mine passed away and I was gifted postcards that the man had collected by writing to many Postmasters in various Alaska posts. The Postmaster was TJ write on the provided postcard where they were located and how their mail traveled to the lower 49. Handwritten on the postcards in the now deceased man’s box were descriptions of dog sleds, trains, ships, airlines, vehicles, as the modes of mail travel. What a treasured gift to me, I thought. The widow knew that my husband was a US History teacher and that I would find the information interesting as well. I contacted the Museum in Anchorage, Alaska that might want to learn about these postcards. It happened that year, to be the 50th Anniversary of Alaska becoming a state. So I offered the postcards to the curator, because she said that they wished to display them based on photos I had emailed. I included the address of the widow that had gifted the postcards to me. The Museum sent a letter of gratitude to her. Gosh, that felt so good to hear of the neighbor’s heartfelt delight!

Dawn, your words couldn’t have come at a better time! We have such a large part in the dreams we want to see coming true! Throughout Covid, I have tried to emanate the friendly regard I want to see around me in the world. By doing so, I can influence the environment in which I live. As writers and artists we need to confidently practice and refine our craft, and take action to open doors for our dreams to come true, rather than hide behind our attempts as if they were not worthy without a proven record preceding them. Thank you for your encouragement and example! I will keep working my way in, via words, shapes, drawings, and doodles – but all by continuing to hold the door open for ideas to grow.

I made a comment yesterday about postcards from Alaska, but I want to make an additional comment about Dawn DeVries Sokol’s Postcard Project book. Communication with self and others through documenting, writing creative thoughts, can become artifacts of personal development and intimate relationships with those for whom we feel emotionally close. On one summer vacation trip, I had my three elementary-aged children purchase a postcard at places we visited. They wrote what they saw, learned, and enjoyed that day. They dated the cards, then mailed them to our home address.
Once the postcards all arrived, they put the cards in chronologically order, hole punched a corner and put the cards on a small loop of twine. They can forever keep a memento of their summer adventure that year. It was something to do as a calming, reflective activity each day of our vacation and economical as a gift shop purchase and postage. They could doodle or draw what they enjoyed as Dawn suggests. The tear-off of postcards in her book is a great idea! Something that grandparents could get for grandkids and a stamp added on each postcard so that they just need to draw, address sticker, and send. Love the box she painted in Tempe, AZ. Thank you to Dawn!

I think my way of doodling, since I’m not an artist, is solving crossword puzzles. But maybe you’re right, Dawn. I’m going to try a black, felt tip pen on white paper sometime when I’m feeling uninspired and see where that takes me. Thanks for the post.

Just do it! Be the change! Doodle! I had never taken an art class in my life and never thought I could draw or create visually. I took a class with Deirdre Potash who used doodles as a basis for unleashing our inner child and artist. Every doodle inspired me to write about something new or to use art to enhance our understanding of a story. Love these ideas and mantras! Thanks for the encouragement and inspiration, especially for overcoming that ever so prevalent inner critic!

My inspiration word for 2022 is nourish. I have been asking myself questions that work well with your “just doodle” mantra. I ask what would be more nourishing for my heart right now: social media rabbit hole or crafting of one sort or another. It’s early yet, but crafting is winning, as is my heart:)

Julie Foster Hedlund’s 12Days4Writers included one day of writing prompts, including writing limericks about 2021. It reminded me of how much I loved doodling with words; I wrote 3 and could have continued but for lack of time. Same theme as this, just a different medium. This is one prize I don’t want to win because drawing, painting and doodling with pen or paint are as meaningless as fooling around in a machine shop would be; my media are words and fabric. But I love the reminder to experiment freely, in whatever medium speaks to us!

Boy I think you just crawled into my head this morning. I’m behind on reading these posts. This is the one I chose for this morning and it spoke to every thought in my head right now. I feel creatively handicapped in so many ways and yearn to be an artist, to make or write something beautiful. But my world so gets in the way. Your just doodle is a perfect start for me. It’s simple. It seems calming to me. It’s something I can do with my kids so I’m present but creating. It’s something. So thank you. Happy creating to you!

Yes! This is how I (ideally, not always) power through writer’s block. If I can’t seem to get into my current project, I just free write–like doodling with words. I write whatever comes into my head without worrying about what the writing will be when I’m finished. Sometimes I can use what I’ve written, and sometimes I can’t, but either way, I am moving and not stagnating.

I love this idea. Infact, I think I am going to go off and doodle right now. I had looked forward to the sweet promise of being more productive once the new year started, but that didn’t happen. Maybe doodling will help stop the worrying and get me writing. I have always loved creating with art, and the only reason I stopped I think was because time Is short, and I always felt like what I was doing with my time had to lead to a potential Payday instead of Just appreciating creating for the joy of creating.
