by Tammi Sauer
Over the years, I have shared all sorts of ways to come up with ideas for the Storystorm crowd…start with a title, celebrate the weird stuff in life, mine your childhood, play with structure….
When Tara asked me to write a post this time around, I was worried. Did I even have another idea on getting ideas?!
Then I realized that both of the books I have coming out February 2022 serve as a fresh way to come up with new ideas. Yay me for inspiring me!

LOVEBIRD LOU (Sterling), illustrated by Stephanie Laberis, is about the appreciation of self, family, and community. NO BUNNIES HERE! (Doubleday Books for Young Readers), illustrated by Ross Burach, is about not making assumptions about others. Both books are filled with humor, heart, and ridiculously adorable characters.
But these books have another thing in common! They each have a holiday hook! LOVEBIRD LOU is a perfect fit for anytime of the year—but it’s especially lovely for Valentine’s Day. NO BUNNIES HERE! is a super fun read on any day—but it’s especially wonderful for Easter.
Did I set out to write a Valentine’s Day book or an Easter book? NOPE! Do these books tie in nicely with those holidays? YUP!
**Please note the more hooks your book has, the more likely it will snag an agent/editor/book buyer/reader!**
In addition to these sorts of books landing in seasonal displays in bookstores, there’s another bonus to having a book with a holiday hook. Sometimes these very same books will get picked up by Scholastic and appear in Scholastic Reading Club Flyers. MOSTLY MONSTERLY, illustrated by Scott Magoon, was in October flyers. The monster stuff made it a nice addition to Halloween books. A LITTLE CHICKEN, illustrated by Dan Taylor, made it into March/April flyers. Why? Well, that little chicken was a nice fit for spring/Easter books.

THIS IS MY CHALLENGE FOR YOU:
Choose three holidays or seasons. Brainstorm characters or situations that have some sort of connection to each of those holidays or seasons.
TIP:
To give your book idea even more of a hook, try not to include the mentioning of the specific holiday in the title. We want people to want your book all year long.
TO EARN BONUS POINTS FROM ME:
Have a book idea hook into two holidays and/or a season. MOSTLY MONSTERLY, for example, ties into Halloween and Valentine’s Day. Read the book to see what I mean. MY WORKING MOM, written by Peter Glassman and illustrated by Tedd Arnold, is another example. It ties into Halloween and Mother’s Day. Want another example? Okay! Check out COLD TURKEY written by Corey Rosen Schwartz and Kirsti Call and illustrated by Chad Otis. It ties into Thanksgiving and winter.

Happy holidays, everyone!

Thanks, Tammi, for kicking off this month’s challenge with such a cool way to generate a new idea! I wrote a story a couple of years ago tying into Halloween, a common childhood fear, and not prejudging others. Guess it’s time to grab a calendar and look at some other holidays…😉

Thanks for the post, Tammi. I couldn’t agree more! My book GRANDMA’S TINY HOUSE: A COUNTING STORY (illustrated by Priscilla Burris) was based off of my family’s Thanksgiving, but since I never mentioned a specific holiday, its appeal extends to other holidays that include potluck-style celebrations (Mother’s Day, Easter, etc). And it does have many hooks including counting, diversity, family, and other aspects of math as well (volume, area, etc.).
Excited to do some more deep thinking about holidays and hooks. Thanks for the thought kindling!! 🔥

I love the idea of tying your book to two holidays or a holiday and a season. As I was reading your post, an idea popped into my head, title and all. But then I read that I shouldn’t put the holiday in the title…and so now I need to rethink the title since it ties in closely with the story. I’m putting my idea on my StoryStorm list and will spend some time rethinking it. Loved your post! You’ve got me thinking about some other story ideas. ♥️

Happy New Year and this is a great post to start the year. I like your suggestion of not putting the holiday into the title to make it a more year-round read.
I realize the characters shouldn’t be holiday characters either. This post reminded me of one of my manuscripts. I wrote a story with Santa and the Easter bunny, both critiqued by editors. One told me she couldn’t visualize because Christmas is done in primary colors and Easter in pastels. Another told me, as a not published writer, to not send a holiday book as your first. It’s a hard sell.
But YOUR idea is about stories fitting nicely into holidays not about the holidays themselves. You have got me thinking about my other stories and what potential holiday hooks they could have.
Thank you.

The bigger the holiday, the bigger the market (and bigger the competition). I would recommend thinking of other lesser known holidays or events, especially if your book is more regional.
For example: My book “Pedro’s Pan” (West Margin) ties into smaller celebrations in numerous regions throughout the US (and technically the world) that have gold discovery in their history like Golden Days in Fairbanks, Alaska, Discovery Days in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Gold Rush Days celebrated in both California and Georgia and so many more.
The bonus with looking at smaller regional holidays/celebrations is that they often tie into local school curriculums which opens another set of opportunities.

Great post, Tammi!! What a terrific way to start off StoryStorm 2022! I love the idea of hooking into two different holidays through a seasonal kick!
As soon as I read your post I was hooked (hope an agent / editor is as easily caught)… I have already sketched out 2 picture books with 2 different holidays in each one. The one with ghouls and goblins I like the best, the other one is going to take some serious “StoryStorming” and a great deal of tweaking,.. but they fit so well together I can’t wait to work on it!

I’m gobsmacked! What a list of titles that show the perfect multiple hooks in your books, Tammi! I love a reminder early on during idea month that marketing matters, that this is a business and we are in the business of selling picture books, and that ideas can be even better ideas with hooks that are endcap-worthy for more than one season/holiday! Thanks so much! Your generous giveaways are amazing, too. Thanks for your generosity, both Tara and Tammi.

Ok I love the tip of avoiding specific holidays. As I build out my universe and plan books, I knew I wanted season books, but I also wanted them to be lasting/timeless/and inclusive. Avoiding naming a holiday was something one of my friends had suggested to me, and I love seeing it echoed here. *takes notes*

I recently rewrote a story from around 7-8 years ago and found out half way through that it has a holiday tie-in, which was exciting. I am very intrigued to try to rustle up an idea that works for more than one holiday at a time.

Also, I can think of a few more wonderful holidays to celebrate in PBs. Great post!

As a teacher, it was always difficult to find picture books to read aloud for Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Constitution Day so I brainstormed those holidays. I liked writing about the children of our Constitution Framers, Ben Franklin had 17 so there should be some story matter there!

Thinking about characters and seasonal story situations made me think of the amazing nature photography a friend of mine produces of all the beautiful creatures who live around his forested country home. Images of does and fawns stepping out of the forest, birds at the bird feeders, a fox slinking along a fence…combined with personifying those creatures and relating their stories to Thanksgiving, autumn, Easter, spring and summer…enabled me to bring those images to life. Thank you for setting my creative juices in motion.

Hi Tammi, Thank you for this post. You have given me another way to look at the several ideas for stories I have that revolve around holidays. I wonder how the story will evolve if I take the holiday name out of the title. Maybe I will find my theme and my story. Thanks again.

Great suggestions, Tammi! I have a snowy winter book WIP with a blended family of diverse cultures and their newly devised custom each winter – never even thought how it could be a good holiday book. Now I’m pondering if the illustrations are best as planned, or to show varied holiday symbols in the pictures – and how some of my other WIP might hook into seasonal aspects without directly being holiday themes. Thanks for the perspective nudge.

Solid marketing technique. I like how you added the tip to not mention the specific holiday in the title. As an aspiring Middle Grade or YA fiction writer, I’m going to make that a challenge to choose a specific holiday but not mention it at all. Kinda like you’ll often find that Harry Potter themed events pop up around Halloween…even though HP isn’t a “Halloween” book.

The thing that really stood out to me when I picked my 3 holidays, was the theme of spending time with family that felt so important in all of them! I can’t wait to play around with some new characters and dig into family time!

Tammi Sauer,
I love your title LOVEBIRD LOU. One of the favorite people in my life is my oldest daughter’s best friend, Catherine Louise, but we have called her Lou for many years as she requested! I am going to call her today to say hello and tell her about your book. Better yet, I shall order a copy and have it shipped to her. Thinking of holidays as themes for stories is a good idea. I have an idea for a story about a lantern festival in Japan, from my childhood experiences. Romantic lights floating down a gentle stream, remembering loved ones that have passed. The illustrations would have dark purples and dark blues with the lantern lighting following along with the story to the page turns. Peaceful, quiet trickle, feeling safe. Thank you for your ideas for Storystorm.

I often have ideas about Christmas books but it was helpful to think about ways of tying in multiple hooks and different occasions throughout the year!

I really appreciated the process of making a list of as many holidays/observances I could think of, then sit back and looking at the list to see where some creative, unexpected tie-ins might exist. Thinking about holidays around which books might be marketed is such an important element of pitching a book that I guess I hadn’t considered, so thank you, Tammi!

Great reminder to tie a strong theme with a holiday. I think I’ll look through my old manuscripts to see where this might work. Thanks!

This sparked ideas for me! I like the ‘soft tie’ to a holiday without committing to it by labeling it. Thx

This is perfect advice. I actually love books that don’t make it obvious they are holiday books. They are like hidden little gems.

such a fun idea to envision book displays and fliers for your story (as in creating them) all year round! maybe not what you intended, but that’s where my mind led, and I don’t even have a story idea yet 🙂 But you did indeed get my head reeling with lots of fun holiday mashup stories and different ways to interpret the idea! An excellent start to my first Storystorm experience. At this rate, I should reach 30 in no time!

I remember you talking at an SCBWI event in Texas and you mentioned something about including a holiday hook. It’s still very good advice. Especially about not mentioning the holiday specifically. Thanks for sharing, Tammi!
