Remember, slow and steady wins the race!
If you didn’t get to 30 ideas yet, you have a few more days!
Go back and re-read posts, browse posts from previous years (see category drop-down menu in the left column), or just take a shower. Showers ALWAYS work.
(See? Even this guy’s excited.)
When you have 30 ideas, you can qualify for one of our AMAZING Storystorm prizes (the daily giveaways and the Grand Prizes, feedback from a kidlit agent) just by taking the following pledge. Put your right hand on a picture book and repeat after me:
I do solemnly swear that I have faithfully executed
the Storystorm 30-ideas-in-30-days challenge,
and will, to the best of my ability,
parlay my ideas into picture book manuscripts.
Now I’m not saying all 30 ideas have to be good. Some may just be titles, some may be character quirks. Some may be problems and some may create problems when you sit down to write. Some may be high-concept and some barely a concept. But…they’re yours, all yours! Give them a big, fat, juicy smacker! SMOOCH!
You have until February 5th at 11:59:59PM EST to sign the pledge by leaving a comment on this post.
PLEASE COMMENT ONLY ONCE.
The name or email you left on the registration post and the name or email you leave on this winner’s pledge SHOULD MATCH. If you want to check the registration post, it is here.
Again, please COMMENT ONLY ONCE. If you make a mistake, contact me instead of leaving a second comment.
Remember, this is an honor system pledge. You don’t have to send in your ideas to prove you’ve got 30 of them. If you say so, I’ll believe you! Honestly, it’s that simple. (Wouldn’t it be nice if real life were that straightforward.)
If your name appears on both the registration post AND this winner’s pledge, you’ll be entered into the drawings for the daily giveaways and the Grand Prizes: feedback on your best 5 ideas from a literary agent. (I will announce the agents tomorrow.)
So what should you do now? Start fleshing out your best ideas! Write them as elevator pitches. Get ready because YOU might be a CHOSEN ONE.
The daily giveaway prizes include picture books, manuscript critiques—all the stuff you saw during the month. All winners will be randomly selected by Random.org and announced next week.
So, sign away and pick up your winner’s badge to proudly display anywhere you choose:
(Once again, thank you to Melissa Crowton for the Storystorm 2019 logo and badges!)
CONGRATULATIONS! YOU’VE EARNED IT, STORYSTORMER!
But remember, Storystorm doesn’t necessarily have to end here. Hopefully idea generation has become a habit and you will continue to jot down ideas throughout the year. Don’t stop! Keep it going!

Hi Tara,
I’m so sorry to bother you, but I think the name I commented with on the first few posts was my first name only and after a day or so, I added my last name. If there’s an easy fix, please correct it so that I can be added to the random drawing. I commented on all 31 posts. If it’s too much trouble to correct this, don’t worry about it—live and learn 😉
Thanks again for this wonderful event. It’s a great way to begin a new writing year!

Hi Tara! I averaged 1.5 new ideas a day. Some days 0 and some days three or four. Some of them I ran with and others didn’t get beyond the titles. A few were new ideas for very old drafts. (It’s amazing what can change when you take out a manuscript you’d given up on years before. Storystorm is always a great inspiration and motivation for getting off my butt when my motivation is falling (like my butt).

With right hand on The Empty Pot by DEMI, I solemnly swear that I tallied my Storystorm ideas and totaled 32 possibilities!
On December 26, 2018, at 3:55 p.m., I made one of the best decisions in my writing life: I registered for Storystorm for the first time. Being among incredibly fun, authentic, supportive, and inspiring talented writers and illustrators juiced up my joy every day when I logged on to your site. I’m excited to flush out stories and flush away others. THANK YOU, TARA! My greatest “take-a-away” from your “Brainstorming Better Ideas” Webinar a year ago were you words “Write with JOY!” Your quote is posted on a sticky note on my lampshade along with my doodled flower and whatnots. I’ve learned SO MUCH from this experience, and I’m deeply grateful to belong to such a magical group. Blessings for your continued journey,

I followed Story Storm, keeping a notebook of ideas, for the 30 days. But I’m not going to sign the pledge for a chance to be a winner because I’m a middle grade author. I can’t promise to use the ideas for Picture Books, and someone who actually IS going to do that should be the winner. Thanks for the month-long journey of tickling my muse (or mind) and helping me to form ideas. It was fun and enlightening. Good luck, everyone!

Yes, I did it. More than 30 for the first time. But what I did this year is take more notes, and saved ideas on how to generate ideas so I can keep them in my notebook and refer to as often as I want to. Plus, I can keep adding ideas. Thank you so much for offering this.

Tara, Thanks for putting together another great Storystorm. I must have at least one or two gems in the 30 diamonds in the rough I generated. (I am hoping my emails match. I had trouble logging in with my hotmail account and switched to gmail, but I’m not sure if I did that at the very beginning or not.)

Even with all my medical problems that have been creeping up like weeds I finished with 36 ideas (which is a low for me) the majority (24) of which are nonfiction. I am excited by this new direction my writing is taking.
And, as of this morning, I have 17 rough drafts that I can’t wait to play around with as 8 of them have chapter book/middle grade possibilities. I also revised 4 of my old Storystorm manuscripts for 12 x 12.
Thank you Tara for doing this once again, and a special thank you to all the contributing authors and illustrators for making 2019 a GREAT STORYSTORM!! I will definitely be back next year!!

One of your posts suggested I check to see if ‘my’ book title had already been used.I was astounded and initially very disappointed to find someone had already published using ‘my very unusual’ book title. However after the brainstorming I believe the outcome is an improvement Changing the title changed a perspective in the story and for the better. I hope. Thank you Tara.

Thank you Tara! I have my notes, blurbs, sketches. It was great to think about things not considered, have journeys down memory lane, and also to read other authors’ personal stories and hear some great nuts & bolts tips. Fabulous. (Also appreciated that 5-day grace period – LOL!) I know there’s much more work to be done, but I’m loving this kick-start.

Thanks, so exciting to have this base of inspiration to launch 2019. Already have three new drafts under my belt – that’s a crazy level of productivity for me, but maybe (hopefully) the new normal.
I tried to look at my initial sign-up, but that post didn’t show all of the responses, so I’m not exactly sure what my signup name was at the time, but it was either lovethatword or luvthatword or Angela H. Dale (my email is ahdale [at] yahoo dot com). Thanks again for putting this on every year – amazing!
