When you are trying to make it in a business that favors good ideas, you are going to need to get some. Easier said than done, right? It’s not the 1960s anymore when you could just send away for them by mail order catalog. (Not a lot of people know that “Where the Wild Things Are” cost Maurice Sendak $8.95 and a self addressed stamped envelope.)
So where do ideas come from? Good question. I always think of the Bright Eyes lyric by Conor Oberst about being a musician and songwriter: “I’m drinking, breathing, writing, singing. Everyday I’m on the clock.”
First, when it comes to drinking and working, I recommend coffee. But you can drink whatever you want. Tea, Black Cherry Kool-aid, Orange Julius. Second, it’s the “Everyday I’m on the clock” bit that makes the most sense to me because I like the idea of never being off the clock as an artist and a writer. It is a job we never really punch out of, isn’t it? Living a creative life is a full-time job and being open to ideas means you are always on the clock.
You are on the clock during your morning commute. Four lanes of Hondas and Subarus jockeying for the exit lane may not be the ideal setting for turning illustration or story ideas over in your head, but the creative mind never clocks out. Just be careful not to drive off the highway into a ditch especially when your last phone transmission is a text to yourself that reads “bunny has a potluck but everyone brings cups.”
Keep a notebook handy at the office because even when you are on the clock, YOU ARE ON THE CLOCK! Ideas don’t quit just because you have 150 emails to answer and Dale from Accounting is waxing interminable about his adventures in home brewing. However, you don’t want to be so focused on story ideas at your day job that you end up getting fired for being a bad employee. But if you do get fired, it would be good if you had plenty of amazing story ideas to sell. So it’s a tricky balance.
Standing in line at Starbucks? You got time to lean, you got time to clean, buddy! Ideas are working overtime at coffee shops. The right mix of caffeine and anonymous strangers milling about keep the idea synapses firing. Who is that old lady? What is her story? Who is that toddler? Why is she screaming? Why is that screaming toddler’s dad just staring at his phone while his toddler is screaming? Is he actually a cyborg dad suffering a program glitch? And there’s your idea. Write it down.
And just when you think it’s quitting time, remember that ideas work the night shift too. After you have kissed your honey or let your cat bite you goodnight, and after you have drifted into that state of half-awake, half-driving-your-bed-through-four-lanes-of-Hondas-and-Subarus because-you-are-three-hours-late-for-that-college-humanities-class-you-forgot-to-drop-in-1997, you will have one more idea. This will be a very bad idea. Do not write it down, it’s gibberish!
Ideas never take a day off. They are workaholics. All you have to do to get them is to show up, is punch your timecard and get to work. By constantly being on the clock, and making room for creative work in your daily life, whether it is writing, painting, daydreaming or doodling, ideas will come knocking at your office door, submitting their tiny résumés. And you are always considering candidates because you are always open for business. You’re always on the clock.
Josh is 50% eraser shavings, 50% animal cookies and 50% Café Americano. Josh is also horrible at math but he loves to draw. When he was very small, his mother read him books with words and pictures by Maurice Sendak, Garth Williams, Richard Scarry and Ezra Jack Keats. His dad provided him with piles of scrap paper, pens and pencils to make his own pictures. Josh is bigger now but he remembers those stories and pictures vividly. And he still loves to draw.
Josh has been drawing professionally since 2004 and has done so for the nice folks at Scholastic, Hooked on Phonics, and singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins.
When he isn’t drawing he can be found enjoying beautiful Northern California with his wife, traveling to a rainy European city, reading a book or doing any number of activities that don’t require math.

With a humorous and well written post like that, I was surprised that you lean more towards illustrating than writing. Thanks for sharing and making me laugh this morning.

OMG! Who doesn’t love a secret prize. Do you remember when you were a kid and went to the five and dime, and they had brown lunch sacks all stapled up with the words “mystery prize” written on them? Also, I just want Josh to know that kissing my honey good night and letting my cat bite me good night really resonates, lol :0)

Thanks Josh! Unfortunately (or fortunately) I am generally so busy at work because I am a 7th grade math teacher who has to create her own activities (no textbook) that my ideas are relating to creative ways to help students understand how to find circumference or solve equations. Maybe somehow those can translate into picture book (or MG) ideas somewhere down the road! But when I am off work (which isn’t always when school ends) then my mind is on writing or imagining. I have so many notebooks/journals hanging around in different places. Thank goodness my husband is supportive of my habit!
I love your drawings and I appreciate your advice!

Hi Josh,
Real life meets creative clockwork in your post and I could see myself in the text to me moment you shared. I think I can mine a few more moments with you as a role model, though. I’m intrigued about this mysterious not-yet-ready for prime time giveaway! Something tells me it’s got to be good.

Thank you for this much-needed reminder to always be open to, and making space for, ideas. Like so many of my peers, I often fall into the trap of waiting for the perfect time to be creative, instead of opening up to it more generally – and always being prepared with a notebook!

It is said that it takes 21 days of doing something in order to turn a behavior into a new habit. The fact that Josh’s post comes after 21 days of Storystorm might be coincidence, or maybe not. 🙂 He has helped confirm–“living a creative life is a full time job.” “Be open to new ideas.” “Ideas never take a day off.” And “Punch in the time card and get to work.” Thank you.

omg…a self-addressed stamped envelope…I sent out my first story back when they went via snail mail. All the publishing companies said put in a SASE if you want your MS returned. I couldn’t figure out what an SASE was.
I sent them out without an SASE. I received almost all my MSs back with a rejection letter and handwritten notes (which I thought at the time was quite rude). Thankfully, one editor mentioned in her notes to send a self-addressed stamped envelope next time. BING…light bulb moment – SASE.
Thanks for an entertaining and memory provoking inspiration. ~Vicki

Josh, this was a delight to read–every word. The metaphors throughout are priceless and I need to actually save this one to post somewhere: “…ideas will come knocking at your office door, submitting their tiny résumés.” It’s just too perfect.
I LOVE your art and when I read that you did work for Kenny Loggins (love his music!), what came to mind is when I saw him a few rows ahead of us at a Yankees’ game (the old stadium which I miss!), and he was purposely seated next to his brother (they looked too much alike for it not to be) on the inner most seat so he wouldn’t be bothered. When the game ended, he inevitably was bothered by a few people for selfies and he was incredibly gracious. We already know he’s a sweetheart through his public persona and his music (“Return to Pooh Corner” anyone?), but it was impressive witnessing that. I’ll never forget that.

While the downside of always being “on” enough to catch ideas (and feeling guilty when washing the dishes and NOT coming up with a great new one), the upside is enjoying the daily long walks and leisurely “working naps” I take while I’m on the clock. Thanks for your words.

“Always on the clock.” So true. A few weeks ago, while holding absolutely still in an MRI machine, I thought of a scene for a novel I’m working on (in bits and pieces). The setting, dialogue, everything was coming to me so clearly and I couldn’t write it down. Right after coming out of the machine I was whisked to check out and I had another appointment. The next morning, I bolted up in bed, “Scene! What was that scene? What were those brilliant words I had in the MRI machine?” I did remember some of it and wrote what I could, but it’s amazing when and where those ideas pop up. It’s just not always the most convenient.

Great, fun, and inspiring post. I absolutely love the line and thought that ideas “show up with their tiny resumes”. What an awesome image that is! I love it! Just thinking about the concept of all my ideas basically interviewing for the chance to become one of my stories–well, that conjures up another new set of ideas. Thanks. Susan Swan

Ideas everywhere! I have supplied myself with a raft of scratch paper and a decent pen in each room of my home and pencils in the truck (cause I got caught out with frozen ink once…) I do always try to pull over with my hazard lights on to jot down anything the voices tell me when I am out and about!

Spot on and hilarious (!): “The right mix of caffeine and anonymous strangers milling about keep the idea synapses firing. Who is that old lady? What is her story? Who is that toddler? Not only did this post give good advice about getting story ideas, it also made me smile. As soon as I read these lines, I knew this was going to be a fun post to read: Just be careful not to drive off the highway into a ditch especially when your last phone transmission is a text to yourself that reads “bunny has a potluck but everyone brings cups.” OMG, could you imagine that? (Well, uh, yeah…you did.) Sadly, that is so like something that would happen to me. 😦 And ending the post with “Josh is giving something away, Tara just hasn’t figured it out yet.” also made me smile.
Your bio is fun, too, and your illustrations are great.
Thanks.

I so understand the tricky work/life/write balance. I am 80% teacher, 87%-92% parent and 14% writer. The thing is, I’m really good at math and recognize that percentages adding up to 100 don’t matter in this case when the ratio is so off balance. Time to adjust my priorities!

I love being on the clock. The notion that ideas send their tiny resumes to us makes sense. They are tiny and need expanding. Ultimately you don’t hire all of them. Great analogy. The fox eating the apples reminds me of the Three Little Pigs.

Ida the idea dukes it out with four lanes of Subarus and Hondas. But whoa wait, here comes a lone Prius overtaking all of them in the HOV lane. Prius pulls over to give Ida the idea a lift. They drive off into the sunset with very few emissions behind them to live happily ever after. Thanks for the never-off-the-clock advice.

Great post, Josh! I like the idea of being on the clock at all times, and it actually helps when we retire. I’ve had friends who retired and had to ask themselves, “OK, if I’m no longer a hairdresser (or cancer nurse, or therapist), what am I?” But since I’ve written all through my working life, I was a writer then and I’m a writer now, too.

Thanks for reminding us that as creatives, we’re always on the clock and that’s a GOOD thing! It’s even a fun thing! (And it’s definitely a funny thing, judging from this post.) Although sometimes the just-falling-asleep ideas turn out to be pretty good — I write ’em down anyway, even if the harsh light of morning shows them to be gibberish, or if, in the morning, I have to figure out a scribbled note that looks like poirwe roieutc tya98r, e fhals. Which is definitely Gibberish, the language spoken in the lost land of Gibber. 😉

Thank you for the warnings to avoid those insane ideas that might be “gibberish”. The kind that come from lack of sleep. For me, they often come when the CPAP mask has slipped off a bit and I wake up with a cup of drool at 3AM and thoughts like “Turtle decides to paint his toenails but doesn’t have opposable thumbs to grasp the brush.” Right, don’t jot that one down. I loved this post SO much.

You’re so correct about the creative mind being open to ideas all the time. Some of my best ideas come at that nodding off time and they are so demanding they wake me up! When I finally get up and flesh them out, a lot of times they are good ideas. But I wish they came earlier in the day!

Great post, Josh, but I have to tell you, after reading all these posts about when and where ideas can appear, I’m convinced that ideas are inconsiderate little boogers who delight in popping in at the most inconvenient times. In the middle of a teacher-parent conference about staying on task. While you are up to your elbows in cupcakes that should have been baked yesterday. Just before you go under for your colonoscopy. If they weren’t so vital to our work, we’d never put up with that kind of treatment.

It’s comforting to hear someone else’s recurring nightmare of a college class debacle. Mine was a dreaded advanced algebra class required to finish my literary degree. Even though I think I took the course, for years it’s haunted my dreams–that I really never took it and substituted something else. How DID I graduate? I’ll never remember exactly, due to lots of daytripping of punching the clock! Thank you for a funny post and the idea to stay on the clock 🙂

I can relate! Ideas come along at the most ill-timed occasions. I’ve lost many by not having my idea book handy. I will endeavor to remedy this! Thank you for a great post. T

Hysterical post filled with words of wisdom. Thanks, Josh. I’m always people watching and noticing the little details around me, but what a great idea to take it one step further, making up stories about the people and things we see around us. And what a fun image: workaholic ideas submitting their tiny resumes!

I bought a used time clock for my studio so I could punch in and out. Unfortunately, it broke. I probably need a new one.

I may be too late but wanted to say:
Your drawings are beautiful. Also, it is a full-time job! It’s like being a mom. (only speaking from experience otherwise I would say dad too:)

Always on the clock. Got it! Even if it is gibberish. Gibberish is better than nothing. Gibberish has potential.
