by Tami Charles
Repeat after me: I might fail, and that’s okay!
Now that the pleasantries are out of the way, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Tami Charles and I am a Storystorm failure.
Why?
Because effective today, on this sixteenth day of January, whereupon I should have a minimum of sixteen story ideas, my grand total is. . .wait for it. . .a whopping three. THREE!!!
Hold on, guys. Be right back.

Storystorm, Day 16, self-portrait.
Well, that was cathartic!
Moving along. . .
I’ve been a member of PiBoIdMo (now Storystorm) so many times, I’ve lost count. In the beginning, I outdid myself. Thirty ideas, in thirty days? Ha! How about sixty-two?
Truth be told, my “idea” count decreased with each year and honestly, I’m okay with that. As I reflect on where I am today, versus where I was then, I realize that 98% of my ideas were really, REALLY bad! I didn’t land an agent or any book deals with those ideas! (Thank the good Lord, himself!)
In fact, the first year I “failed” Tara’s challenge, I drafted the idea for my debut picture book, FREEDOM SOUP. That next year, I “failed” again because I thought I was Superwoman. I had also joined Nanowrimo, where I wrote my debut novel, LIKE VANESSA, and brainstormed seventeen picture book ideas.
But for me, it was all about quality versus quantity.
Thanks to Storystorm, I’ve learned how and where to find nuggets of inspiration. Jogging in the park. Waiting in line at Home Depot. Sitting in the doctor’s office while my son barfed in a bag. (Good times!) On a conference call with an editor who personally requested a “Cheerios” type of picture book. (True story. Also: thank you Carter Hasegawa!)
Inspiration is literally everywhere. Sometimes you find it yourself, but other times it finds you. And here’s the BEST part: all it takes is a word, a doodle, a sentence, to mark the moment.
Plot, characters, setting, bleh! Who cares? It’s the IDEA that counts and it’s that IDEA that will turn into a STORY later.
Now if you’re one of the Storystormers who’s up to 74 ideas already, this blog post is probably not for you. (Show offs!) I want to specifically address those who might be feeling “less than” at this point.
Are you behind in your story idea count?
It’s okay.
Do you feel like every.single.idea stinks worse than Limburger cheese?
It’s okay.
Are you worried that other Storystormers are sailing ahead of you and somehow that makes you less qualified?
That’s not okay.
One of my favorite quotes is, “The race isn’t given to the swift, nor to the strong, but to the one who endures until the end.”
Right here, right now, let’s make a proclamation together.
Repeat after me:
I, ___________, do hereby proclaim that my time is not up yet. I still have 14 more days to meet my goal. And no matter the count, I know that I will still win the million dollars that Tara Lazar has promised every participant.
So what are you waiting for? Grab your journal or PC, and Storystorm with abandon.

Thank you Tami for reminding us that it is ok to fail as long as we get back up again and keep going. If we were afraid of failure we would never put anything down on the blank page. I have said the proclamation out loud and now to make room under my mattress for that million dollars.

Congratulations on your upcoming books, Tami, and thanks for the inspiration. Some days ideas just flow like a rushing river and others they trickle like a leaky drain. Some are good and some are unbelievably bad. But all ideas are sparks! Thanks for reminding us it’s ok not to have the rushing river every day. 😉

This is precisely what needed to hear today, facing frigid temperatures, cabin-fevered kid brains filling the halls later this morning, and the need to just sit and doodle. It can lead to feeling so very behind, so very inadequate. Still, this I know: Ideas will roll off my artists like the cold air that unwraps them as they bolt past me. Wonder which idea is mine to catch and hatch?

Now I’m really curious about the Carter Hasegawa story…
January 16, 2018 at 9:20 am
Tami Charles
True story. Carter is my editor for FREEDOM SOUP. While he was on assignment in Australia, we had our very first conference call. For some reason, he started talking about the next type of picture book he was looking for. He explained it in relation to the famous Cheerios commercial (with the biracial family). It was such an aha moment for me! I wrote the story, revised (of course), and when my agent queried him with it, she reminded him that this was the Cheerio story he mentioned wanting. Needless to say, we had an offer for it right away. So that proves that sometimes ideas are presented to us, even when we’re not looking for them. The name of that book is A DAY WITH THE PANYE, which tells the story of a young girl in Haiti who learns to carry the basket (pane) on her head for the first time while walking to market. It pubs in 2020, which is like a century from now!

Thank you, Tami, for your inspiration and reminder to be persistent. I’m a former librarian who is trying my hand at writing for children. You peaked my curiosity – What is a “Cheerios” type of picture book?
January 16, 2018 at 9:28 am
Tami Charles
A couple of years ago there was a Cheerios commercial that sparked great praise and some criticism. It featured a biracial family. The overall feeling of the commercial was heartwarming and spoke to the beauty of diversity. This is the essence of what my editor wanted to see in a picture book he wanted to acquire. Challenge accepted. I myself come from a multiracial background and there are so many heartwarming stories within these cultures my family represents. One in particular is the tradition of carrying a basket to market. This is done in many countries, particularly in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the African continent and many Asian countries, too. I think the image of seeing people, especially, women, carry the baskets so gracefully on their hearts, filled with necessities to feed their families, is beautiful. I wondered how do they walk like that? There are deeper stories of pride and tradition here. So, I wrote a story about a young Haitian girl, who learns to carry the basket (panye) to the market for the first time. It’s entitled A DAY WITH THE PANYE and debuts in spring, 2020 with Candlewick.

Waiting on the edge of my seat for Like Vanessa to arrive in my mailbox. This is AWESOME advice Tami. Truly after teaching 20 kindergartners how to tie their shoes, learn to read, and sit down without falling (all at the same time)… us former teachers have learned a thing or two about patience.

One old mentor used to say that “there are two ways to win: either you run or you don’t let anybody else run. It’s up to you”. Back then I decided to be one of those who runs….and cheers everybody else along the way! So charge on, everybody, no matter how far you’ve come and wether it feels like too little or too much! There’s always a win, if you keep on!

The reason I’m struggling with fresh ideas is that I’m overwhelmed with the actual writing I need to do on 2 PB and a MG novel…some days it’s just hard to FOCUS! So thank you for saying “It’s OK”…we are only human and my pom-poms are down. Vulnerability is hard but you made writer’s block recognizable, and funny! Thank you Tami.

Thank you. As I look over my story ideas, it is apparent to me that there are just a couple that might be ‘winners’ and it was hard not to be disappointed in that. Um, hello, there are a couple that might be winners! It’s quality, not quantity, for me, too. Let’s endure to the end!

The word success has been a common theme in my life the last week. It is not about being successful, but how you define it. If you come up with one book contract out of your 30 ideas, are you a success? If so, does that mean you failed 29 times? If you do not get a contract of any kind, does that mean you are a total failure?
Maybe it is not about quantity, success is in quality? So I come up with only 10 ideas….5 really good ideas……3 great ideas…..okay, just one amazing idea. I pitch it and no one wants it. Did I fail?
I remember Jane Yolen commenting that she held onto a book for nearly 20 years because when she first wrote it, no one was interested. But some 20 years later, she tried again and it was picked up.
That is success. Not in selling her book, but persistence! To not give up. To keep trying despite failure and uncertainty. Success is not the win, it is the persistence of not giving up despite not winning.
The final step across the finish line determines the winner of a marathon, but it takes thousands of steps to get there. Those thousands of steps were not failures.

This is a fun reality check. I try to imagine each attempt as a leap of faith into something wonderful. A huge bin of feathers? a warm pool? a cloud with no bottom? The attempt and the leap are pluses no matter the ultimate outcome. There will be ripples. Who knows what the final outcomes will be?

Wow — great post — and big congrats to Tami for such great accomplishments! We first met at one of the NJSCBWI conferences and I remember being in a critique group with her. I had made my comments ahead of time and I loved her story idea, but I made a ton of comments/suggestions. I was afraid she’d hate me for putting so much red ink on her pages! She thanked me later for the critique! (Now it looks like I could use her help!) 🙂

I have had years like that, but I love Tara’s Storystorm because it given me permission to write down anything I want without a critical filter on. There is beauty in both ideas: quantity and quality.

Thanks for your post, Tami. I love your sense of humor, something we need to maintain, especially when we feel that sense of failure or hear it whispering in our ear, telling us how worthless we (and our work) are. Failure cannot stand in the face of laughter! Thanks for bringing such fun and inspiration into our day today! Susan Swan

Thanks, Tami for a great post. Funny how one of my ideas already had to do with failure being okay…And it’s a good reminder that some of our ideas really are stinkers even if we think they are brilliant at the time we get them! It’s okay that those never see the light of day.

I’m so impressed, Tammi! And curious: did you find your agent before your contract, or go for the contract and find the agent? It is always a quandary… Thanks so much for sharing and giving my angst some levity!

My favorite part of your wonderful post is..
“Are you worried that other Storystormers are sailing ahead of you and somehow that makes you less qualified?
That’s not okay.”

I agree quality is better than quantity, But how do I know if they are quality ideas at this early stage?!! Ah maybe finding a balance between the two and refining the ideas later. Thanks for your post reminding me less is sometimes more.

I had one idea recently during a school visit. A little girl’s hair looked like clouds. So I wrote that in my journal: Little girl. Hair like clouds.
What will that turn in to? A PB about a girl with soft hair? A nonfiction about clouds and the water cycle? An ode to nature’s beauty?
I’m not sure, but you see how I literally took one idea and turned it into three?
Follow your inspiration. Don’t worry about the details…yet!

I am still hopeful to have more–but I find I’m grabbed right away by some of the ideas demanding “write me!” Idea gathering certainly isn’t a linear process.

January 16, 2018 at 2:48 pm
Tami Charles
Hi Carolyn!

I do have more days, and I’ll find story ideas everywhere. Recently, I had no time to spend on thinking, writing, developing a quickly written note. I had obligations. The weatherman canceled schools everywhere. Three grandsons came to my house for the day. I took them to Paddington 2 movie. We ate popcorn and laughed, and on the way home, I asked for their favorite part. And today, I’m drafting a story generated by a six-year-old’s laughter, the pieces coming together as I read your reminder, “I, Pam Miller, still have 14 more days.” Yippee!

The older I get, and the more I put into it my dream, I’m learning how important it is to discover my own ability – not based on what others do – and my own place in this writing world. Thanks, Tami, for the reminder that achieving quality should be the goal over quantity. The quantity will happen in its own time.

Well, how refreshing. I am one of those quality over quantity people. I may think of an idea, but won’t throw it on the list until I verify with myself that it is of value. For me that means that if the idea starts percolating and the story starts gaining momentum in my head it goes on the list. You’ve helped me to not feel less or not worthy of being here. 🙂 I really find a great deal of value in what is being shared. Every post helps us grow. Thank you

Wow, I LOVE this! I’ve been writing more and more over the past two years, and revising and writing better, too. But still I have more MS sitting without dummies or with dummies seemingly near-finished but not revised to sub-ready. So part of me wants to create more and more ideas, and find those “IT” magic ones, while the other part just wants to stop and complete every past story, many that seem pretty good. So I have not done my Storystorm reading much less ides writing every single day. However, on one single day of the 6-7 I have so far read, I soon after on that day and next wrote 2 new drafts, both seem really good. I’ve spent time doing comp searches, found stories similar to one -interestingly because we all come from the same culture, and they each have won an award or awards… so the idea is not bad, and this helped me consider how to make sure mine is distinctive and just different enough to be worth another book in this type of story or to move on. Better though was second idea seems very fresh. So if I come up with nothing else this month, I am not concerned at all. Because I can use all these resources to read again – or first time – throughout the year!
And well, you- a published author agrees…Congratulations on your brilliant work!

Thank you sooooo much for this!!! All of the other posts thus far (have been great!) have been specifically addressing the participants that are really keeping up (not me! LOL!). Thanks so much for cheering the rest of us on. I’d love to be able to keep up and every time it’s assumed I am, I feel a little knife twist in my gut knowing the deep dark truth! Thanks, Tami! I have to confess that I don’t even realise I’ve failed until I look in my notebook and realise that my last idea wasn’t yesterday, it was three days ago! Thanks for a reminder that failures are OK. Also, an idea that doesn’t work in one format may work in another, I’ve found. A story I wrote for a magazine was rejected but worked as an easy reader, and its been in the publishers catalog almost 20 years.

I have one idea so far and am really just getting started now. So thanks for the encouragement. I’d love to read your MG as I write a rough draft myself in NANOWRIMO last year. Here’s hopin. Congrats on your two debuts.

Whew! This is on encouraging post. I have an idea. No, a great idea. I have one great idea. My students are excited about it because they inspired the story. Quality, right? Nevertheless, I will endeavor to allow the energy of inspiration to blanket me and cover me in pb ideas.

The timing for this topic is great for me. I’m stuck in the fear of failure mode and cannot get myself to push the submit button.
I also have not had as many ideas this year as in the past. and that will be ok. I did take an idea from last year and write a draft. I feel ahead of the game.

I’ve got ideas smellier than the smelliest cheese in the world, Vieux Boulogne, a soft cheese from northern France, which is even smellier than Epoissses de Bourgogne that is banned from the French transport system!

Wooo-hoo! Off to go brainstorm how I’m going to spend that million dollars! Thanks for this post, Tami. I have come up with exactly nine ideas and most are just things my four year old has said. He’s my idea powerhouse, the mitochondrial muse of manuscripts 😉

Always good advice. You cannot succeed, if you don’t first fail. Sometimes A LOT. This is my third storystorm. I’ve met the 30 ideas once and I’m ok with that. It always gets me thinking and I get a few ideas to tuck away. Meanwhile it also helps me keep going on the story(ies) currently working on because I’m focusing on opening up to creativity.

I wish I had this post the last few years! I’ve never completed this challenge for one reason or another. But this year, I’m at idea 24 and have kept up on posts. Yeah! But I will keep this in mind as I continue through. Thank you!

Finally, I’ll get that million dollar check I’ve been waiting for!;) Thank you for this really honest post which is, honestly, REAL. Sometimes I “win” Storystorm, a.k.a. PiBoIdMo, sometimes I don’t. Frankly, I’d rather “lose” with one awesome idea turned into a manuscript which sells than “win” with a pack of dead-in-the-water clunkers. Still waiting for that, but my day is coming. Congrats on your success!

Thanks, Tami. Quality is the key. I’d rather have 2-3 great ideas, than 58 stinkers. But to be honest, I am at 17 ideas on day 17, and I think some are good. You had me laughing.

I failed NaNoWriMo one year because I can’t just spew and then go back and wade through the mess to find something worthwhile. Perhaps that’s why I find PBs manageable. I can spew and go back and fix a much smaller mess. And I have no shortage of ideas. Good ones, maybe not, but ideas, yes.

Yeah, so I know the number isn’t that important. I may still use those ideas but I’m not too worried about it! I’m focusing on better ideas now, so fewer, but they are better.

Wow Tami, just the inspirational permission I needed to be where I am. Yes…just a few doodles and notions are all I need.

Thanks, Tami, for sharing your thoughts on quality, not quantity of ideas. I’m behind with reading posts & idea generation this year. But still plugging! Glad I’m not the only one.

Wow Tami, this post is amazing! Thank you for the insight. A great reminder that ideas can come from anywhere, even if they aren’t all good. Congratulations on all your success!

Thanks for posting Tami. I’m one of “those” with only a few ideas in my notebook. But you’re right. That’s OK because quality is way more important than quantity. Although I’m not totally convinced they are quality. Time will tell.

I liked your statement, “inspiration is literally everywhere. Sometimes you find it yourself, but other times it finds you.” Thank you, Tami.

I love this article, you give good information and insight. I love the Cheerios story information. I also love the humor and tell Tara I will be looking for my check, hahaha!

Thank you for setting the record straight. I realize now I’ve been continuing my hoards of ideas and manuscripts as a simple distraction from focusing on quality. Awesome post!

Thank you, Tami, for reminding me that… my time is not up yet. For me, that means more than StoryStorm time. I’ve completely passed through my fifth decade, but for as long as I’m breathing and thinking up ideas… my time is not up yet!

It’s very encouraging to know that you don’t have to be “perfect” to be successful! Thanks for your openness — and a great “oath”!

I totally agree! I put no pressure on myself. The idea is to get my brain primed and ready for the snippets or full blown ideas have a place to land.

Going over a large chunk of my ideas, most of them not worth pursuing, it’s comforting to have someone reassure me that “failure” is ok!

Lol – it’s Day 31 and I’m just now to Day 16 (though, patting self on back, 27 ideas) – oh, wait – how many did I have last year? and the year before? And did I USE or even ATTEMPT to use any of them? Okay, breathing and repeating the pledge (with a little less than 3 hours to go). THANK YOU, Tami!

I like the idea that single words , or idea fragments, can count as idea nuggets. I got plenty of THOSE! February can be for middles and endings. 🙂

I am revisiting some of the articles from this month of StoryStorm and yours is like a great big PEP talk. I love it. I also like the fact that it is okay to fail, learn from it and make it better. Thank you.
