Staring at the blank page always makes me worry about not getting anywhere with my writing. My trick is to go back a page or two and start editing. I guess we all have our rituals!

I SO appreciate this post…I have several cups, two hold a pint of coffee on some mornings, some evenings “an adult beverage.” My M&M’s are separated by color, which ever number is lowest is consumed first…I write snippets all the time – that napkin under your cup wouldn’t stand a chance of escaping unsullied!!:) I pray for an illustrator because the whale I just doodled out looks like a angry deformed turtle with a huge fluke tail…sigh, more coffee please! Thanks Deborah for this wonderful post!

I’m a squiggly line doodler who cannot draw, but the blank page syndrome is still easier for me to conquer with pen or pencil in hand than with fingers on keyboard. We all find our own method. Thanks for the post, Deborah.

This writers cupboard is not mug bare! My writer’s state of mind determines the mug I use. When stuck on revisions, out comes the “Work With Me People Mug.” Chipped (largest on the handle) and one crack inside that hasn’t penetrated the outside wall, yet.

Thanks for this post! I’ve spent the last two days stuck, whining inwardly, and inhaling my kids’ Halloween candy because I am not able to get the words or sketches for a story idea out of my head and onto paper. Clearly, I was eating the wrong candy and drinking from the wrong mug. Took your advice (and Picasso’s) and just started writing and now I have a new story to obsess over!
Your illustrations are beautiful! Can’t wait to read your new one!

So THAT’s why I have mugsful and shoeboxes full of pencils…and a few pens! Thanks for validating my collection!
This was a fun postto read first thing Saturday morning. Today I won’t feel so badly about pushing aside the random slips of paper with disconnected notes that are zig-zagged atop my desk beside the computer. Maybe I should draw a picture of this unique arrangement before I begin writing…but wait! I HAVE begun writing… right here. Thanks for the inspiration, Deborah!

One of my biggest regret – I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DRAW. Even if you gave me a ruler and told me to draw a straight line, I could not make that happen. But I know a few writers who start writing their stories from a simple doodle. Wish I was so lucky…lol. Great post!!!

What a visually beautiful and inspiring post, Deborah…I loved it from the first key strike to the last. 🙂 I, too, am a paper and pencil addict…so is my hubby (especially with painting and drawing supplies)…which worked out well because I am taking Mira Reisberg’s Illustrating Children’s Books class this month and did not have to buy a single thing. And your Picasso quote was totally perfect…’to know what you are going to draw, you must begin drawing’…this is my PiBoIdMo golden nugget takeaway from today. And I’m going to share this will my Book by Book Club FB group also…we are studying Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird…and that is exactly what she recommends…just write. And it also makes me think of Jane Yolen’s favorite saying, “Butt in chair”. Thank you so much!

I also have a mug and colourful collection of pens. I believe it comes from the time I was teaching and I disliked correcting in red all the time so I bought different colours. Now I do all kinds of different things in coloured pens. I also love colour. Love to see how things work in an illustrators mind. Great visual.

I admire & yes, I’ll admit envying those who can illustrate their books. 🙂 I enjoyed checking out your web site. Loved your sketches! I can so relate (can’t we all) allowing distractions to hinder us from writing/illustrating. I’ve adding chocolate into my writing life. Thanks for your post and time.

Isn’t it amazing what can be created from a white blank page whether it’s a story or a drawing? Beautiful and different post. Thank you!

Yes, the act of drawing generates ideas, and sometimes walking away and coming back brings clarity. It’s all so counter-intuitive, some weird circular feedback loop about the creative mind. I feel like this blog post was channeling me, I too am an architect turned author/illustrator. Profound thanks!

I’m supposed to be writing some pb text for a wonderful illustrator. So far I have made a latte, checked my chocolate supply and decided that some construction paper gingerbread men might look super cute on my bulletin board…oh and read today’s Blog by Deborah Freedman. I feel totally called out! Time to get cracking. Thanks, Deborah!

hahah! Thank you! This is what my husband always does when he wants to write something. Dark room late at night, right music, (used to be a glass of scotch), blank screen and… TOO MUCH PRESSURE! Not much written. For my part, I just have to get over the idea that it is OK to waste paper and not everything needs to be a masterpiece right out of the gate. SARK is a big advocate of naps. I don’t have this luxury. But today I am working on a greeting card (I’m an illustrator) and happy to have your post contribute to a little procrastination. I’m convinced that looking away every so often will make the flaws pop out so I can find them better. I wonder if this also works for writing?

reading this brought to mind the movie “Funny Farm” where Chevy Chase is sitting at his desk staring at the page after typing 2 letters…
Have to agree with Mona way above that pencil and paper are much less intimidating than a blank computer page. And with Kent that nice paper and sketchbooks do the same.

This post is not only aesthetically pleasing… but so, so comforting. I feel like a fraud so often. I can’t be a writer, sitting here in my sunroom with my blanket wrapped around my legs, coffee in hand. Writers write. They don’t stare out windows.
Or do they?……

This post reminds me of how I got my 8 year old daughter to start making progress on her writing homework. I told her her pencil made a magic connection between her thoughts and the paper, and that ideas would come out of it if she just kept it moving on the paper–for 5 solid minutes, just keep it moving. It worked!

Deborah, this is wonderful! You have given the rest of us permission to allow an idea not to come and to find an idea from the time spent trying to find or create an idea. Bravo! Thank you also for inspiration to sketch the idea and give ourselves a voice in this process. Reading your post was much fun! Yes! I feel so understood. No longer so aline. I thought I was the only bittersweet Ghiradelli chip addict outside of Cascadia. I haven’t eaten any in days, having been lured away by mint M&Ms. No wonder the ideas haven’t been coming. Thank you, sister in chocolate and picture books!
