Five…four…three…two…one…
Happy New Month!
And you know what that means, right? November’s over. (Already? Geesh, where did the month go? Oh yeah, I did spend some time in a blackout.)
So, do you have 30 new picture book ideas?
You do? Well, you beat me to it. That’s one of my well-kept PiBo secrets—I’ve yet to complete the challenge myself! (Did I mention a blackout?)
But YOU—I KNOW you did it!
You can qualify for one of our AMAZING prizes just by taking the following pledge:
I do solemnly swear that I have faithfully executed
the PiBoIdMo 30-ideas-in-30-days challenge,
and will, to the best of my ability,
parlay my ideas into picture book manuscripts.
Now I’m not saying all 30 ideas have to be good. Some may just be titles, some may be character quirks. Some may be problems and some may create problems when you sit down to write. Some may be high-concept and some barely a concept. But…they’re yours, all yours! Give them a big, fat, juicy smacker! SMOOCH!
You have until December 5th at 11:59:59PM EST to sign the pledge by leaving a comment on this post.
Remember, this is an honor system pledge. You don’t have to send in your ideas to prove you’ve got 30 of them. If you say so, I’ll believe you! Honestly, it’s that simple. (Wouldn’t it be nice if real life were that straightforward.)
If your name appears on both the registration post AND this winner’s pledge, you’ll be entered into the grand prize drawing: feedback on your best 5 ideas from a literary agent. There are four grand prizes! Thanks to Ammi-Joan Paquette of Erin Murphy Literary Agency, Teresa Kietlinki Dikun of Prospect Agency, Marietta B. Zacker of Nancy Gallt Literary Agency and Susan Hawk of The Bent Agency for volunteering their time and talent to PiBoIdMo.
Other prizes include picture books, manuscript critiques, original art, jewelry, plus all the stuff you saw during the month. All winners will be randomly selected by Random.org and announced on December 9th.
And guess what, PiBoIdMo doesn’t end here! From now until December 8th, stop in for daily posts about how to organize and flesh out your ideas. We’ll even teach you how to make a picture book dummy!
Plus—you can claim your first prize now: a winner badge for your website, blog or social media site, designed by Ward Jenkins. You can make it larger or smaller to fit anywhere. And if you want it on a mug, don’t forget to stop by the PiBoIdMo shop where every purchase benefits Reading is Fundamental (RIF).
So start signing the pledge and patting yourself on the back for a job well done.
And if you can do both at the same time, that’s even more impressive!

There are 30 new ideas awaiting my attention . . . not to mention the ones from last year that I still want to flesh out. Thanks so much for running the challenge again.

So glad to have participated for the first time this year! The more ideas I come up with, the more likely to find a few that will really work. Thanks for the inspiration!

I have completed my first PiBoIdMo and was amazed at the result. One of my first ideas resulted in a story which I submitted to Jean Reidy to be critiqued (as a result of winning an auction through Kate Messner)! I never would have done this without you and PiBoIdMo! and I have started another story. The ideas won’t stop coming either! I hope this is a new routine. Thanks so much for all the inspiration!

Thank-you, Tara. And please thank all your guests for us. I was so excited, I stayed up til midnight just to sign the pledge. I cannot believe that I was able to complete the challenge with well over the goal of 30. I guess all the years I was dreaming of picture books finally broke loose as ideas. Who knew? (Here’s me smiling until my cheeks hurt.)
Thank-you. Thank-you. Thank-you.

I do have 30 ideas. Some are GOOD (I hope) some are so-so. I had such a great time trying to come up with ideas, getting excited about a few,and thinking, ‘well this is better than nothing,’ with others. Plus all the great ideas posted each day, helped so much. I’m on for next year, and will work on what I have in the interim. Thanks for providing such a great experience.

I am so thankful to my friend, Danna Smith, who sparked me to join PiBoIdMo. Not only did I come up with the thirty but five more as well. Yay! Have a first draft on one and a few bits and pieces on others. A few I’m so excited about, now just have to come up with the format. Thanks for all your hard work and to the fellow writers in PiBoIdMo for all the encouragment, information, and a few chuckles.

YES! YES! YES! THANK YOU, TARA! Another great PiBoIdMo experience! Wonderful posts, Tara! I made it after some difficulties that started me out many days ‘behind,’ and I’m sooooo happy to have met my goal anyway! One of the greatest benefits (aside from the head start on projects and ideas) is that, by doing this for a whole month, we are seriously practicing opening those creative portals that keep us attuned to the potential story-making connections in our everyday circumstances. It’s a great way to live! Thank you again!

Thank you so much, Tara! I love Novembers! I can’t remember whether this is my third year or fourth year but I hope I will never NOT do a PiBoIdMo in November for the rest of my life. It’s a fantastic habit to get into and last year/year before I carried on through December, too. I had loads more ideas this year -approximately 100 THOUGHTS (but not well-enough thought out to call ideas) -I was just being freer than before and putting anything down. I’ve whittled those down to 55 that are kind of okish thoughts, 21 ideas that I like (but they’d not each turn into a separate story) which I’ll think about seriously and maybe spend an hour each morning on each one before the children wake up, in January. Out of those, there are ten that I’m really keen to get going on which probably means I’ll end up writing five of them. If I got five manuscripts from the PiBoIdMo 2012 that would be fab! I’m itching to get started but I have to spend December editing some other manuscripts for an interested editor (including one of last year’s PiBoIdMo ideas!) and I’ve just reread my PiBoIdMo ideas for 2011 and there are ones that have stayed there for a year untouched which I’m looking at with fresh eyes and getting all excited about again. Hooray for PiBoIdMo!!! Thank you Tara. All the best, Clare.

YEAH! This has been a totally amazing month! This was the first year I had heard about PiBoIdMo and I thought it was great. I challenged myself to write a PB idea each day – for all 30 days and it felt great to actually accomplish that! Now I get to write like crazy and see if any of the 30 ideas work out! Thanks!

I do solemnly and double pinky swear too, that I have AT LEAST 30! When I started this, I was frightened that I wouldn’t be able to come up with even 1 idea a day, but when I sat down to do it each morning, I found that some days three, and four ideas at a time were coming, I am going to miss the inspirational posts, but I am keeping my book of book ideas near my desk and decided that this was one good habit I didn’t want to break! Thanks for organizing this Tara!!

Thanks for organising another remarkable month Tara. Last year was my first PiBoIdMo and I killed it. This year was a bit more challenging and I just managed to slide into home with my 30th idea being recorded with only 100 minutes to spare.

I have thirty ideas! To be honest I finished after midnight on the last day, so I technically did not finish until about quarter to two in the morning EST on Dec. 1st, although it was still Nov. 30th in some places :). I hope this doesn’t affect my eligability. If so, I understand. Either way, thank you for helping me to push my creativity further through this challenge. Signing off, God Bless, Angie Breault.

I do solemnly swear that I have faithfully executed the PiBoIdMo 30-ideas-in-30-days challenge, actually 34,and will, to the best of my ability,
parlay my ideas into picture book manuscripts. A few more things in my notebook are doodles, a list of favorite words started, a new pb story already, a play dough recipe for baked ornaments(I looked up for the nieces and nephew…and lots more!
Can’t thank you enough, Tara, and all of “our” fantastic 2012 contributors that you lassoed in to kept us on track through blackouts and more.

I’m excited to say that I came up with 30 ideas and I even started drafting a picture book. This challenge rekindled my interest and love for writing picture books, which I’d put aside for several years after getting discouraged by rejections. So thank you for this challenge!!

I did it! 35 new ideas! Plus, the notebook gave me a place to add those 7 little scraps of paper where earlier ideas may have just ended up as clutter. Thank you for the opportunity to focus on being creative for a month!

My first PiBoIdMo and I did it! 30 ideas in 28 days and I’m very excited about several of them. A few will probably just end up being spot illustrations or a short series of illustrations, but I’m very happy with the results of this month. You have also had an incredible lineup of guest posters. Thank you for all of your hard work even as Sandy threw a massive spanner in your works!

Tara, I can’t believe my second PiBo challenge is over. I managed 40 ideas of which about 15 of them probably has a chance of becoming a story so I am thrilled! After the horrible year I’ve had otherwise, I’m crossing my fingers that I’m lucky enough to snag one of those grand prizes…what a way to start 2013…;~)
Thanks for all you do for the writing community!

To be honest, I wasn’t counting ideas until yesterday. I just spent time every morning before life woke up reading the fantastic posts and allowing each post to jumpstart my creativity. It worked; I was pleasantly surprised to find more than 30 ideas in my notebook. I think one has potential. Not great odds, but I’ve grown as a writer without even beginning to write the story. Thank you Tara and guest posters!

At first, I wasn’t going to do this. Ideas have always come easy to me — execution is the harder road for me. But several of the 30 ideas I came up with this November are sparking new energy, climbing to the top of my old idea pile and screaming “Work on me first!”. Thanks for the boost.

This was my first PiBoIdMo. What fun and learned lots. Got more ideas (over 30) than I expected. Really concentrated on my childhood and quirky things around me and became more aware of where ideas can be pulled from (and popped into my head). Thanks Tara and to all your PiBoIdMo conributors.

Just keeping all my ideas in ONE notebook was a new challenge for me. Usually they fly all over the place but I managed to keep one green notebook the whole month. Yeah, and it is filled with more then 30 sparks for possible picture books. I plan to develop at least two of them.
Thank you Thank you, I am so glad I did it.

Did it. 39 ideas, some tame, more than a few bizarre, some probably just right.
The best part about this challenge was that it forced me to be extra creative Every Day. It booked over to everything else I did as well.
And I’m not stopping. I’ve got a new notebook for this challenge and I’m filling it.
Thanks for the inspiration and the push. I needed the push.

Wheeeeeee-what a fantastic PiBoIdMo ride…..31 ideas which I promise to parlay into picture book manuscripts. Tara – this was my first participation in PiBo in my first year of putting full time energy into writing and illustrating (after our private school closed and left me jobless). This has meant so much with all of your very talented guest posters and encouragers. It has given me an education, motivation, inspiration and validation. and for FREE? A-MAZ-ING. Thank you, thank you, thank you. This was exactly the kick-start I needed. I have 30+ new ideas and a new “habit” of coming up with an idea/character/title everyday. Also, I loved the inspirational posts each day. It is so nice to know someone besides yourself has had the same fears, self-doubt, etc., and found a way to work through it. My next goal – a picture book manuscript!

Tara, I hope you feel a wonderful sense of pride looking at this long list of comments (which is probably just beginning!)..PiBoIdMo came at the exact-right time for me–it was not a terribly prolific month for me because of soul-sucking Sandy, but it was awfully nice to emerge from the month with 30 shiny new ideas, some of which I’m extremely excited about. Thank you!

Tara…thank you! From the top of my curly-haired head to the tips of my toes…this has been an incredible month. Yes, I did complete 30+ picture book ideas…but, even better than that (could there be anything better than that?), I was privy to 30+ guest posts by authors, illustrators and others who shared their passion for picture books and their advice, insights and expertise. 🙂 Each guest post added golden nuggets of inspiration to what I called my “PiBoIdMo Treasure Chest”…on each page of my notebook, I wrote my picture book idea title/characters/thoughts AND the name of the guest poster and his/her main theme and suggestions…what a priceless resource that will be for me in 2013 as I work on those ideas to(hopefully) create picture books that kids will want to read over and over again. 🙂 🙂
Reading down the list of comments (148 as of 8:30am Dec. 1) was a joy as well…so many now-familiar names of people I feel I ‘know’ in this amazing kid-lit community!
This was my first foray into PiBoIdMo…the start of an annual tradition that will continue for the rest of my life…I so do pledge. 🙂 Tara…I thank you so very much. :):)

I did it, I did it, I did it! Sorry, that wasn’t very solemn, was it? But I do feel like skipping and dancing, as over the past week I’ve had some VERY exciting news agent-wise, and possibly publisher-wise too. All under wraps at the moment until I’m officially at liberty to make an announcement. PiBoIdMo has been hugely inspirational, and I can’t wait to do it next year. I hereby give you a massive ‘thank you’ for organising it (there, that was slightly more solemn, wasn’t it?)

Hi I am a Children’s Book Illustrator. I never get around to the writing I know I want to do. Your website and the daily blogs from each writer has sent me int a writing tizzy, I have written 6 stories this past week. Each person talking about their way of inspiration gave me such a big leg up. They all made it seem easy and logical how to get ideas. I am so grateful and maybe not so hesitant. I am writing a story about a baby duck still in the egg and I have already done many duck related illustrations. Thanks so much , Jane Choc jane choc (610)-269-1543 janechoc-ink.com

I did it! I finished with 72 ideas. I was hoping to reach, or better last year’s total of 80, but am more than satisfied with what I ended up with. I think there are some real winners in what I have, as well as ideas that can be expanded into chapter books and 8 of them are slated for MG status.
I do solemnly swear that I have faithfully executed the PiBoIdMo 30-ideas-in-30-days challenge, and will, to the best of my ability, parlay my ideas into picture book manuscripts.
THANK YOU, Tara for another amazing PiBoIdMo and congratulations to all of those who participated.

I tried PiBoIdMo once before, but got stuck at something like 10 ideas. This year, I kept writing down EVERY idea that came to mind, and got more than 30 ideas. Two are already in progress. Some need a bit more work before they can be called picture books, but that’s the fun in doing something like this. Thank you Tara, for starting this challenge! I intend to make 2013 the year I write several PB’s and keep this momentum going!

I do solemnly swear on my kids’ heads that I completed my debut PiBoIdMo! Yup. It’s true. 33 ideas to be exact thanks to two last-day ideas from my kids – for one of them, the title is enough to throw them into a tizzy of laughter. 🙂 Thank you for challenging me and providing me with truly inspirational writers/authors/illustrators who at times, sparked new PB ideas in me. Now to finding the path to actually write the manuscripts.. Hmm.

Even though this year was a lot harder (and seemingly less productive) I’m so glad I finished another PiBoIdMo. Thank you so much, Tara. And thank you to all the guest bloggers. This next phase is so important – let those ideas settle for a few weeks, get through the holiday madness, and start the new year right – by writing! Congrats to all who gave this a chance for the first time, or who came back for another round.

Well, yep, I did it. And as discouraging as the first part of the month was, I learned so many tips from the brilliant guest authors that I know the process will become at least a wee bit more pleasant. Some of my ideas were also infused into the SkADaMo sketches I did as well, which are up on my blog. Thank you very much, Tara, for creating such a fantastic opportunity to stretch and grow.

I hope you’ll have more time to work on your ideas once you don’t have to keep up with daily blogs. After everything you do for us, we should set aside time to inspire you to come up with the rest of your ideas for at least a week or two. 🙂

Hmmm … MUCH more difficult year 2. Possible reasons: I teach Gr. 5 instead of 2 and they just aren’t as nutty and character-inspiring as the littler ones? Also I am stuck on wanting to WRITE the ideas from last year still which held me back from ideating for this year. But I have lots to work with and mesh into older ideas, and older ideas will merge with newer ideas to create better stories. Now to write … I think I’m going to need to sign off the internet for a solid couple of months if I want to get anything done!

Okay, I’m a brain-stormer, and in that mode I’m not picky at all. Quality definitely takes a backseat to quantity. I have 271 ideas. Now, I have to sort them out. So far, I have two nearly complete rough drafts, 18 solid pitches (I can see what will be on each page, but haven’t actually drafted the manuscript), a number of rougher ideas, and a few titles. Thanks so much for all the help and support, not only on these picture book ideas, but also on finishing projects in general, including my novel and future assignments. I love the Power Hour group! The posts on your blog, Tara, have been fantastic. I have been sharing them with friends.

I do solemnly swear that I finished the challenge! Woo-hoo! About 12 good ideas, 4 of which are nonfiction. About 5-10 terrible ideas, no matter how much coaxing is done, and the rest are if-fy, maybe good with a bit of coaxing.

It’s official! I made 30 in 30 days. Proof that good ideas can bloom even in the midst of a busy-mama life. I’m excited to get started on a few of the best ones… Thanks, Tara for your inspiration and encouragement on the journey!

This was my second picture book idea month and many of my ideas are pretty rough, but I do think I’ve got some good ones, too. Thanks so much!

I did it. Just barely… And it’s my crappiest list ever, but I got to 30 ( because there was no way I was going to miss out on the chance to win those fabulous prizes!)

I did it and I am so pleased! I managed to complete my 12 x 12 in 2012 November manuscript, wrote just over 100,000 words of my NaNoWriMo novel and completed the first draft of it, and write down all of my PiBoIdMo ideas before the month was over! I’m feeling smugly productive right now. lol!
I do solemnly swear that I have faithfully executed
the PiBoIdMo 30-ideas-in-30-days challenge,
and will, to the best of my ability,
parlay my ideas into picture book manuscripts.
Today is the 5th, but I have no idea what time it is where you are. Hopefully I am posting this in time. (It always takes me a while to get into the swing of things after the busy month of November and with Christmas looming large.)

I’m so excited. This was my first year participating.
Thank you for hosting this challenge and offering us these AWESOME posts this month! I’ve kept several as reference posts. And I’ve been introduced to some awesome picture books and their authors! (My kids benefited, too!)
