Living a creative life can be a scary thing. You battle things like self-doubt, fear and resistance. You worry about never having another “good idea.” You can get caught up in reviews, the madness of sales stats or caught up in measuring yourself against others.
Don’t give in to that negativity. When you choose this life as a creative, you must remember that what you are doing is important. That it is vital. That it is good work. You must not lose focus on what is most important: the story.
When you work for the story you are trusting that your work matters and the universe will reward you with inspiration aplenty. When you work for the story you are telling those fears you’ve got more important things to do, and they will disappear. When you work for the story, you are part of what is true.
So take up your pens, pencils, keyboards and styluses. Stare down that blank page or screen before you. Tell yourself, “I’ve got this” and get to work.
And since this month is all about inspiration, here are a few more of my favorite quotes on creativity:
“Creativity comes from trust. Trust your instincts, and never hope more than you work.” ~ Rita Mae Brown
“You can’t wait for inspiration, you have to go after it with a club.” ~ Jack London
“Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen.” ~ John Steinbeck
“Another word for Creativity is Courage.” ~ George Prince

Why is it always so difficult to acknowledge that the work we do is important? Vital even. Thanks for giving us permission!

This is SUCH good advice for those of us battling those insidious self-doubts: treat ’em as part of the landscape. You can’t always ignore them, but you can rob them of their power over you. As my grandmother used to say: “You can’t stop a bird from flying over your head, but you can keep it from building a nest in your hair.”
Thanks for the timely inspiration, Diandra. . . Ahem, your adorable “Bicycle Built for Two” would be an even bigger inspiration, hanging on my wall. 😀

When I write…”work for the story”…I have blinders on so I don’t even see doubt or fear looking over my shoulder. Pretty soon they get tired of being ignored and they go away…;0).
Thanks, Diandra, for a great article!

This is such encouragement, thank you, Diandra.
The quote that stood out for me is Rita Mae’s, because I think I have been hoping more than doing, more than trusting myself as a creative.
I’m working on that.

Thanks Diandra – wonderful, wise words.
I love linking Creativity with Courage. Other words beginning with C would be Consideration (to ourselves), Consistency ( to keep regularly seeking ideas or letting them bubble) and Cuddles (to yourself or from someone who cares for you when you’re having a self-doubt moment or two)
Thanks,
Janeen

Thanks so much for this post, Diandra! When I read “You must not lose focus on what is most important: the story.” I thought about a PB I’ve been struggling with. Reading that made me realize it was the story that was lacking (I was too caught up in the characters)! I think I’ve come up with a great fix! Thanks!!!

Great post and print! I love the idea of focusing on the story. Linda Sue Park did a keynote at our regional SCBWI conference that was about “not believing in yourself,” but believing in your story. She said that it helped her so much to think that way because it was so much easier to do and it took the focus – and pressure – off of her. Love the quotes!

Nice advice and awesome illustrating! I met you briefly at the SCBWI conference this summer at the illustrator’s night. I think you pulled my card or I pulled yours. I remember just looking at your work and thinking, “Wow, she’s so great!” I have since decided that I am just a recreational illustrator, but I’ll probably enter another portfolio this summer because it was fun and most of my good friends from the conference are illustrators! Hope to see you again this summer!
