Thank you, Tara, for starting Storystorm all the way back in 2009 when it was PiBoIdMo. Just think of all the wonderful ideas that have been generated in this community since then! I am excited to start off the New Year with a bunch of new ideas!
I’m the illustrator of two picture books and the author/illustrator of THE THREE LITTLE PUGS, a picture book that was published in 2018. A couple years later, during the pandemic, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and my creativity completely shut down. I turned to knitting, which became my primary creative outlet. I leveled-up my skills and learned how to make cowls and do colorwork and knit adorable tiny things like mermaids, chickens, and turtles.
Knitting has truly been a lifeline for me. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to all my knitting friends, with an extra special thank you to Anna Hrachovec of Mochimochiland for all her amazingly clever patterns (she makes awesome picture books, too!).
In the winter of 2023, I decided to knit a tiny little scarf with some leftover yarn from a project and then needed someone to wear it, so I made this illustration of a bunny in the snow. I was making art again (and now I’m working on a story idea about this bunny)!

In November of 2024, I retreated with friends and finally learned how to play and have fun in a sketchbook (thanks to Courtney Pippin-Mathur and her great big bag of Posca pens). My sketchbook practice is now almost daily and involves putting a sticker here and a postage stamp there and letting myself draw, hand-letter, paint, and collage as much or as little as I want to that day. If I don’t like something, I paint or glue something else over it. I can plant little thoughts and watch them grow and dink around with story and characters in a low-stakes setting that is just for me.

I’m the best version of myself when I’m making things, no matter what I’m making. Making things just makes me happy. And I’m happy to be here with all of you, making stories.
.
What other creative outlets feed your writing and/or illustration practice?
What makes you happy? What fills up your cup?
Is Dr. Pepper the best pop in the world?
a. Yes
b. Absolutely
c. All of the above
To all of you who have read this: Thank you! Don’t forget to make time to do the things that make you happy, it is a nice way to pass the pre- and post-publication times (however short or long they may be).
Wishing you every happiness in the New Year! xoxo

Yes to more play in our lives! And also what I call creative cross training. Sometimes engaging with art as an audience member inspires me. I will write at a gallery or museum. Last night I saw an amazing one woman musical called “In Clay,” which is about a French potter. It inspired me to write some poetry.

I’m not an artist, so I rarely create my own original art. But I’ve discovered that I love to get together with friends, search for art online, and then “attempt” to recreate my own version of it. Sometimes, these turn out surprisingly well, lol. But the main thing is the fun I have doing it.

I love that you came back to your creativity through another medium, knitting! I used to knit in high school. It is soothing! I, too, like creative cross training as Jennifer said above.
We need to find the play and fun! Ty.

Your post reminded me of how much I used to like scrapbooking when I was a kid! I used to cut out everything that brought me joy and glue it all into a big scrapbook! I might try this year to put together a journal where I can do that!

Nina, it’s so good to read that you’re back to the drawing board. Picture books illustrated in collage (like those by Lois Ehlert) bring me joy. I think I’ll do a collage vision board today and see what shows up. Thanks for the push.

I absolutely LOVE your sketchbook! It’s beautiful!
One of my goals this year is to play more with my writing. I started a notebook on Thursday, Jan 1st and committed to write, draw, tape, glue, etc. It’s turning into a good place to “play” with some of the ideas that I come up with during this StoryStorm month with Tara.
Thanks for the reminder! It’s so freeing to play. As adults, we need to take a hint from kids. It opens up that creative part of your brain!

Hi Nina, I loved your article about being creative wherever it takes you. I’m a picture book author and soon after I started writing, a dear friend introduced me to oil painting, a secret life long dream of mine. Nina, I am so happy you were able to find an outlet after finding out you had rheumatoid arthritis. I am impressed you could knit with that challenge.
I really want to get into those daily creative habits you have established for yourself because, like you, I do realize how much better I feel (and sleep) when I have exercised my writing and/or drawing muscles.

I think this is an important message for us creatives to remember. Sometimes things don’t go the way we plan. Whether it is health, life/work drama, rejection, stretches of time of no/low creativity, or mirages of ideas that don’t really pan out, it is important to do what makes you happy. And sometimes that is in something that you never would have come across had it not been for these trials…and of course the inspiration of others.

Thank you, Nina. I appreciate this post! Sometimes I need the reminder that it’s okay to take a pause and focus on other things that bring joy, outside of writing. I love to sew, and when I’m feeling extra motivated, to quilt. Sewing takes me out of my head and into the present. I also enjoy playing the piano. And recently, started to build lego. I struggle with anxiety and these activities help me stay grounded. Love Dr. Pepper too. 🙂

What other outlets feed my writing creativity? Yikes…D&D can be an inspiration- I used to do short stories of goofy things that happened when we played from my characters POV. Journaling- sometimes something will pop in my head that may turn into a poem, or maybe a story- or help move a story along. Reading, too! There’s always good things we can get from reading!

I have dabbled in drawing and painting my entire life. I am so visually-oriented and have had a long (clutter-prone) love-affair with ephemera.
I was introduced to visual diaries when taking a UCSD class in writing memoir. By combining writing and sketching, I worked through my sadness and my determination to always remember the tragic loss of a young native girl on the reservation where I was teaching.
The diary was a like form of palimpsest, which has always fascinated me as I like poking around in old places to see how people leave their mark and how a space evolves because of that.
Here, in this comment, I have used two of my favorite words that I rarely speak and continually forget how to spell!
So now I am thinking that I will explore how palimpsest and ephemera can support a mystery story for middle schoolers. Hmmm.
Thanks for jigging my jaggy thoughts!

I have a few creative outlets that I love to do. One of them is Junk Journaling and Bullet Journaling (aka BuJo Journaling) as different characters in my stories. Not only is it creative, but it really helps me flesh out the imaginary characters in my mind. I also enjoy using the kids tutorials on YouTube to help me draw better, or looking up step by step doodles on Google or Pinterest. I’m no artist, but as I practice I’m definitely getting better.

Today I played uno with one of my younger sisters and she said something as she was looking at her many cards against the few that I had left. I began thinking of an inciting factor that would make a character say this and then I thought about a dramatic question. Ideas come whenever and however but definitely by doing things you love! Im always grateful for any inspiration!

I love your collages! I am so inspired by your work and I wish I could knit. I am in physical therapy and the therapist asked me if I knit. I told him that I hadn’t been able to in a long time and he said it wasn’t a good idea. There are things I won’t get back but I’m working on making some snowflake drawings for January. Thanks for sharing.

Something I do to release stress and improve my creativity is to sign up for activities at the library. I’ve made jewelry, sewed a gift bag, created mug rugs, drew a ladybug, learned new recipes, attended a murder mystery and attended a Titanic activity. These have been free, fun and a way to get creative. During or after my next activity I’ll create a story or prompt from it. Thanks for the idea.

Isn’t it true that we all need to refill our cups?! I use the small beginner water paint books to shut out the world and a 15-20 minute painting gets my creative juices going so I can then start writing/revising. Thank you for this post.

Yes, Nina, Dr Pepper is delicious! I don’t drink soda as much anymore, so it is a treat when I do.
I agree that creative free play is a wonderful way to return to our art in a natural way – without pressure. I loved seeing your sketcbook pages they are quite lovely and reminded me of Melissa Sweet in how colorful and engaging they are.
Thank you for sharing your work.

Nina, first of all your post allowed me to see your bravery along with your beautiful imagination. My mom had RA and I know how painful it can be. I love the joy that you have found and are spreading with your books and illustrations for kids. Your collages are gorgeous allowing the mind and imagination to soar. I need to get back to this technique. I wish you a healthy and productive 2026.

Nina, I’m inspired by your sketchbook practice and your adorable knitted creations. Sometimes coming at writing sideways, finding inspiration through other creative outlets, works beautifully and brings joy.

Yes! Let’s play and have fun. I can’t draw but I see colorful pictures when I write and critique. Recently I did a free five dollar colored pencil class online. I was amazed with my results. Of course I was coached all the way through and my drawings were unlike other classmates, but I liked them!!! So I’ve started something new and fun for me! Thanks, Nina for the boost! And, Dr. Pepper is my favorite!

Thanks for sharing, Nina! I loved hearing the story about how pursuing a different creative outlet brought you back to illustration journaling. And as a fellow knitter, you’ve inspired me to try knitting something new! Best wishes to you! (from a fellow Minnesotan 🙂 )

Great post. I agree with the idea that everyone needs a creative outlet. Obviously publishing is great benefit but is more or less a byproduct of creating. Whether you create a picture, a story, music, a scarf, whatever… The creative process gets to the heart of our being.
Good luck going forward. All the best.
