by Audrey Perrott

If you’ve ever been on my Instagram feed, you already know I cry easily, just like Milton in my debut picture book MOO HOO. But I also love to laugh, just like Babette in the upcoming companion book BAA HAA. And House, well, his snarky anxious self in A HAT FOR HOUSE is me in all the ways.
What I’m trying to say is…
I’m an author shamelessly plugging my books.
I kid, I kid. (Not really, not really.)
Actually, what I’m trying to say is my anxiety makes me a deeply feeling person, which is mostly great when it comes to writing books for kids.
My husband uses the word “intense.” I prefer the word “passionate.”
Tomato, tomato sauce.
This passion usually translates to books with humor and heart, but I’m not always feeling particularly jovial especially when the world feels dark. That’s when I need a little help finding the light—inspiration that brings me joy, makes me laugh, and validates all of my feelings. So where do I turn?
Stand-up comedy.
Seriously.
Hear me out: While the content of most stand-up comedians is NSFPBs (Not Safe For Picture Books), there is a huge bucket of inspiration and knowledge you can gleam.
Stand-up comedy is so much more than jokes. It’s carefully crafted storytelling with perfected word choice, pacing, tone, voice, themes, and a pay-off in punchlines. Sound familiar?
Comedians tell a story that connects with their audience that makes them laugh, hopefully over and over and over again. That’s what we want for the readers of our funny picture books. We are writing to surprise our readers with joy, preferably in the form of a belly-aching snort-laugh so they read our books over and over and over again.
Study the way comedians weave together everyday situations in unique ways. Watch how they lean into the awkward, the embarrassing, the obvious, and the preposterous. Take notes on their timing. Think of their dramatic pauses as page turns. Pay attention to the running gags and where they’re placed in the set.
Laugh—and then analyze why you’re laughing.
I’m not joking.
Humor is a serious business. So is writing funny picture books.
This is why a few years ago, I made a writing challenge I called Eat Your Words to brainstorm silly picture book ideas. You can find all of the posts on my blog, starting here. I printed out lots and lots—and LOTS—of teeny tiny bits of paper with words. Every week I challenged myself to pick three and use them to come up with story ideas. I encouraged people to join me!
They did not.
It’s okay. It was fun! It also helped me get out of my rut and led to some funny story ideas.
You could easily use an online random word generator, such as, Random Word Generator, or you can download the ones I made.
One last idea for ideas: I’ve been a huge Tara Lazar and Storystorm fan for years, even fangirling big time at the SCBWI Florida Regional Conference in 2020 before the world (almost) ended.

But this is my first time as a guest blogger! It’s a very surreal and exciting checkmark on my proverbial author BINGO card. So, I thought it would be fun to make a real 2025 Book-Maker BINGO card for you to download as a way to keep your sights on your dreams beyond January.
After all, one of my main mantras is to dream big, work hard, and be grateful.
On that note, I hope you dream up dozens of big story ideas this January.
I hope you work hard to turn some of the into full drafts.
And I am oh so grateful to Tara and all of you for inviting me into your inbox today.
Now go forth, be the light and find the funny!

Audrey’s sense of humor has helped her get through some really icky seasons in life. It’s also helped her write and publish a few books, including her debut picture book MOO HOO, illustrated by Ross Burach, A HAT FOR HOUSE, illustrated by Druscilla Santiago, and the upcoming companion to MOO HOO titled BAA HAA, launching on March 4, 2025. Audrey believes funny books are just as important as serious books and writes both in her North Carolina home. You can find more about her at AudreyPerrott.com, on Instagram at @audreysbooksandbakes or BlueSky at audreysbooks.bsky.social.

Audrey Perrott is offering a picture book critique [non-rhyming, up to 600 words] OR one copy of one of her books [MOO HOO, A HAT FOR HOUSE, or BAA HAA (March 2025)], to one lucky winner, their pick.
You’re eligible to win if you’re a registered Storystorm 2025 participant and you have commented only once below.
Prizes will be distributed at the conclusion of Storystorm.

Love this so much!! I am not a ‘funny’ person and admire those who have quick wit and see the humor in life! I totally agree that comedy is a serious and business and doing it well is a high art! You’ve done just that! Thanks for this fun post!

What wonderful suggestions to inspire your “Funny”! Sometimes you can’t just sit down and turn on the emotion, which is also why I watch Actors Studio and other actors’ roundtables on YouTube. Often, when they talk about how they get into character, that gives me ideas on how to get into character as well!

I will enjoy using the bingo card; it’s a great way to fill my free time (sigh). However, humor is also important. Several years ago, I listened to a comedian recount the main events of U.S. history from the 1600s to the present. I kept thinking how I wished I had a recording of it because the humorous twists he used made the entire performance fun, engaging, and interesting to listen to!

I loved this tip. ‘Study the way comedians weave together everyday situations in unique ways. Watch how they lean into the awkward, the embarrassing, the obvious, and the preposterous. Take notes on their timing. Think of their dramatic pauses as page turns. Pay attention to the running gags and where they’re placed in the set.
Laugh—and then analyze why you’re laughing.’ Regarding the latter, I don’t laugh often because I usually don’t get the joke. My hubby laughs, and I wonder why. When I laugh, he wonders why he didn’t get it. You and I have something in common-we’re both emotional. I get emotional when I watch a movie or cartoon with my hubby or grandchild. I can’t see my expression, but they do. Both turn to me and say, “It’s only a cartoon!” Last, if movies or cartoons can stir emotions, I think the creators did a great job, and readers or spectators will keep reading or watching.

This is such an important and inspiring post for humor writers! Thank you so much! I write humorous picture books and have been crushed taking critique classes where the teachers literally said to leave the humor and dialogue to Mo Willems and try something else. A couple of comedians I enjoy watching specials of over and over again are Michael Mclntyre & Jim Gaffigan, and I look forward to reframing how I watch them going forward as a learning experience! My daughter and I loved watching you and Ross Burach when you were on Scholastic Storyvoice with Moo Hoo, and now I’m following you on IG! Thank you so much again for this inspiration and for the amazing resources you shared!

I don’t watch a lot of stand-up comedy, but I have a friend who I call the inappropriate clown. She actually makes money entertaining kids at parties, but she is very funny, but sometimes off-color, in her “civilian” life. I will have to think about the elements of her humor. I also like your random words challenge. Thank you for the suggestions.

Audrey, such a great idea to study comedians! LOVE it ❤ And the 3 words reminds me of a book I picked up at The Learning Store (it’s a teacher/parent supply store) for Grades 1-3 😀 It’s called STORY STARTERS: WRITE-ABOUTS. It’s a spiral book with 3 sections of 25 “flip” pages per section: one for setting, one for character, one for plot and you can flip them for however many combination (on the cover it say 1000s, but I’m not going to do the math! lol) Anyway, I’ve yet to use it though may now that you’ve reminded me! Thank you! And congrats on all the books! 😀

This was such an inspiring and uplifting post! I’m a big stand-up comedy fan and now I’m feeling newly inspired to pay attention to the way they tell their stories. Another (related) source of inspiration for me is improv comedy, which reminds me to approach my kid lit writing with an unstructured sense of play. Your post made me smile and gave me lots to think about. Thank you, Audrey! 🙂

I think writing funny books is very hard. Finding a new topic, that was not over/ever done, being funny – such a subjective matter, landing the ending [it’s always hard to stick the landing but more so to stick it on a funny note] All this to say, to you, Audrey, to Tara, and all that write good funny books – Congratulations!! That was not easy!

I love humor and I also feel the feels a LOT sometimes. Yes, I cry for every animal in every movie I ever see. My hubby knows we cannot watch a movie if the animal is not going to live. Hopefully I can use some of my “passion” in future picture books. Thanks for the ideas.

Audrey,
I recently read and enjoyed (laughing and crying) Moo Hoo and your wonderful wordplay throughout. Your suggestion about comedians resonates, as I often try to find new ones along with old favorites when needing to hibernate or take a break. And as you note, laughter is more than good medicine; it’s a spark plug for getting the creativity flowing. Thank you.

Thanks for the inspiration, Audrey! My favorite stand up comedians are storytellers (Jim Gaffigan, Fortune Feimster,
Josh Johnston, Trevor Noah, and Taylor Tomlinson among others) who find the absurd in everyday situations. Now I will be studying their storytelling as a craft for writing my picture books.

Your blog is more rewarding than the first… and that read had gems too. Today my takeaway was the movement from anxiousness to passion to books with humor and heart. Like JoAnn Howeth, (Day 12), your husbands sound like wonderful support. I’ve watched Masha and the Bear, for humor, but not stand-up comedians. I will now though. Thanks to you!

I love this! I was blessed with a natural gift for storytelling, and grew up in a household of very funny folks, so I tend to take a humorous twist on every story that I tell. But I often forget that my same voice that tells hilariously-embarrassing stories on TikTok about bra shopping with my mom the day before starting 9th grade (in a new town, where I knew literally no one yet) and reluctantly trying on the bra on top of my t-shirt (because she didn’t want to wait for a dressing room to open up) just as the cutest boy I had ever seen walked into the aisle where mom was making me jump up and down to test the supportiveness of said bra…. Yeah, that same voice can tell funny stories in picture book form too. I just don’t often remember to pay attention to my own sense of humor. (Maybe I need to watch more stand-up comedy.)
