by Tanya Konerman
“Put your ear down close to your soul and listen hard.”
–Poet Anne Sexton
We’ve all heard the advice to “Write What You Know.” But I don’t adhere to that limiting concept, of writing about only that which I’ve gotten a degree in or do in my day job. Instead, I believe in “Write What You Love,” writing about that which fills my mind and heart the rest of the time, through serious hobbies or interests my family wishes I could stop talking about every chance I get.
“I think you’ve mentioned that obscure fact a time or two…”
Write What You Love is the idea that we all have concepts, items, places, people, moments, ideas, and ideals which are meaningful, important, and life-affirming for us. Each one of us feels strongly about different things, and that potency in feeling is what can make us strong writers about those things…IF we pay attention.
“Hello! Are you listening?”
For instance, I am a nature girl–always have been, always will be. Get me started on talking about forests, trees, frogs, turtles, birds, bears, or anything related to nature in general and you will have to stop me in my size 8 tracks.
This is why I also write about nature, and nature-related topics: because I can do my best writing when I look forward to it, when I am eager to share the deeply-ingrained or experience-obtained information I possess in a creative way that shares my passion with others, and when I pay attention to the topics which seemingly flow my way (yes, I do believe we attract that which we think about and act on most in our lives).
“It came to me in a dream…no, wait, it floated down from the heavens.”
Also, by writing MY passion, I am less likely to commit the ungracious and soul-crushing sin of “Passion Appropriation” (yes, I did just coin that!).
We’ve all been there. You’re drafting or revising or even subbing your newest book, based on your personal knowledge, extensive research, and thousands of hours spent reading, following, experiencing, and obsessing over your favorite niche topic. Then, you open your newest PW email to find an announcement that sends chills down your spine: YOUR BOOK is already being published via someone else, someone possibly not as ardent or heartfelt, perhaps not as “in the know,” maybe not as connected to the topic as you are.
“Woe is me. WHATEVER shall I do?”
And while you know your book may be different in every way that counts, you also realize the market for this topic has already been breached—perhaps even saturated depending on the topic—and your heart pinches while your body grows numb with shock and you whisper…
“If only I had gone into accounting instead…”
Do you really want to be responsible for this happening to someone else when you seize upon an idea you’re not the right person to claim? I sure don’t.
So if you’re looking for your next idea, one that will make your writing feel true and right (and, dare I say, easier than if you write about something you have no interest in), plus one that shows YOU are the best one to create this book, look no further than your heart and write what you love—Write Your Passion.
“I can’t believe I get to write about what I love…what a life!”

Thanks for this post, Tanya–discovering a book has come out that’s so similar to the book I’ve been subbing has happened to me more than once! So painful. So now I’m subbing a book that reflects an experience I’ve had.

TANYA: So far, just in our first week of STORYSTORM, we’ve had TWO AMAZING posts about not writing what we know–but writing what we LOVE. TIME TO PAY ATTENTION, PEOPLE!!! 😉 THANK YOU for INSPIRING us to focus on what we’re PASSIONATE about. Only by following our hearts–instead of market trends!–will we be true to ourselves, and our readers. THANK YOU!!! Tanya,
Thanks for nudging us into keeping the joy in what we do. Bombarded by rejections and discouragements often dilutes that “joy.” Frustrated, we lean into studying trends in the market and drafting books that we believe will sell, but not really ones we believe in. I listened to one prolific author tell our workshop that if we wanted to write about dogs but learned that dinosaurs were the “hot topic,” then replace the MC with a dinosaur. Easy-peasy. Ick!
Sending you inspiration for your next book…

Your advice to write what you love sounds much more inspiring than write what you know. It makes sense that if you are passionate about what you are writing, the process and outcome will be more enjoyable. Now to make a list of the many things I am passionate about…

I love how you coined the phrase “passion appropriation” as I’ve both witnessed and experienced people switching “lanes” to write something that needs to be written…by someone else. I only write what I love and if I ever come across an empty space that isn’t in my lane, I tell others about it, encourage them to go get it. Thank you!

Congratulations on Mud! I experienced what you described recently—an author I love has a book on the same topic as my latest manuscript. My book is different, but there also many books on the topic that are recent. I’m afraid the market is saturated. I guess that’s part of the business. I’m looking at a different angle now that showed up in my research and submitting the other manuscript just to see what happens. Thanks for your post!

Great advice – and here’s the thing: by writing about our passion we come to know it better, so we are (in a sense) writing about “what we know”. Or, as I like to say: write about what you want to know.

Tanya, I much prefer your advice to write what you love, as opposed to write what you know, because if I base it on my childhood, there was not a lot there meriting picture book content! I have several STEM-based info-fiction manuscripts inspired by nature. The subjects intrigued and motivated me to write about them. So thank you for the confirmation!

I am so grateful for your words: Write what you love.
I’ve been a little discouraged by the emphasis on “write what you know.” There are so many things I don’t know…And as a lifelong learner, I was so proud of myself for wanting to read more and learn more. But then it came to my writing and I’d always second guess myself.
But I’ve also felt like I just had to write those things that were gnawing at my brain. Those ideas that invade by waking (and sleeping) hours and don’t want me give up them. I guess those are the things that I love.
So thank you, Tanya, for reminding me to write what I love. Your words have pushed me to go back and reread some of my past notebooks to revisit or recycle some of the seeds I’ve held onto, but hadn’t planted yet. Let the spring planting begin–in January!!

I love to write and began a story that was important to me, but somewhere along the critiques and edits, MY story slid into obscurity and the finished product was no longer my story. Even though I’d already paid (self publishing) a company to print and market my book, I couldn’t send the final manuscript; it wasn’t the story I wanted to tell. Write what you love and don’t let anyone change the heart of your story.

Tanya, your quote says it all – perfect choice for the post and as a beacon for writers. And speaking about clever, what an ingenious topic for your book – MUD TO THE RESCUE. Congratulations!

OH, wow – that “they wrote MY book” happened twice to me this year. NF takes so long to research. I am sure there is another book in what I have amassed, but need to find my unique slant.

Your post is exactly how I feel when I see a book on the shelf that’s written from an idea that I thought was unique. * sigh* However, I believe my story ideas are different, and I embrace them with the hope and confidence that an agent or publisher will agree.
In closing, I’m also a Nature girl at heart, growing up with
daddy long leg” spiders, praying mantis, frogs, toads, birds, clams, Horsehoe crabs, and love to include STEM in my Nature Zines/MS. Many thanks for sharing your insight, Tanya! I look forward to reading your books!

Thank you, Tanya.
I’m hoping that our female pond frog, Freddy, is hibernating deep in the pond with our 12 fish. I kept a month-long Freddy journal this past August with S.A.W. It was SO cool to see her grow, sketch Freddy living with her pond community, and adding facts and fables!

Childlike curiosity is a well-spring of ideas. Just reading yesterday how foxes heads are shaped just right to spring in the air and dive into 3 feet of snow to catch one mouse. When the days get long passions sure do carry us!

Wise words! And since the (trad) publishing industry is so slow, your book could make a splash a few years later! By then, that other book may be (sadly) forgotten. All you can do is send it out there and hope for the best!

Tanya, first—I’m LOVing “Passion Appropriation”! PERFect term! And I solely agree with following loves/passions. Writing a well-crafted, meaningful book, regardless of genre, etc. takes time, you NEED to love it to see it through and see it through well. Plus—it’s enjoyable! Who wants drudgery? Thanks for a great post!

What great advice to write about what you love! But also, please don’t despair if another book comes out that sounds similar to yours. It will not be the same. (This has been my mindset ever since I checked out two published picture books, both titled Making a Friend, both featuring a child who makes friends with a snowman. The stories are nevertheless different enough that both exist.)

Great advice, Tanya. How can we expect to ignite a reader if we lack a passion for our own stories. Now you have me asking myself what I am most passionate about.

Thank you Tanya. I’ve felt this way for a long time, but I’ve also felt shut out from writing about the things I’m passionate about because they were learned, and not an organic part of my experience. This is strong validation. Excuse me while I go pursue my passion…

Sometimes I worry that the things that *I* love are not the things that agents love. Or that a particular topic is too niche for an industry that prefers broad appeal. Choosing subjects can be a bit of a balancing act, I guess.

I know I’ve found something I’m passionate about when I put the manuscript away for a week/month/year and get a smile on my face as I reread thinking Yes! Yes! If I have to force myself to revise, it probably isn’t my story to tell.

I’m not an “expert” in anything (at least, not in an official, technical way), so I always worry that someone is going to expose me as the “fraud” I am, writing stories I’m “not qualified to write.” I need to get over that hangup and just write anyway! ❤

Love this spin on the common “Write what you know”…Just writing what you know may come out dry and boring, but if what you “know” is what you LOVE-it will definitely shine through, but if you don’t truly love what you’re writing, maybe it’s not your story to write.

Danger in the Dunes? Indiana? I’m not sure if this was in Indiana or Michigan but on a family camping trip at Warren Dunes one of the parents (not me) decided to let two of the children go off together and only one came back. Is this what your story is about? I think I have another idea to add to my StoryStorm list even though I was already at 31. Thanks, Tanya and good luck with your upcoming picture book!
