Reading the title, it’s not what you think.
I do schedule plenty of things—school visits, weeknight dinners, and birthday parties. But what I’m suggesting here is to schedule NOTHING: time, that is, to DO NOTHING.
No laundry. No grocery shopping. No pickleball. (Please, no pickleball!!!)
I want you to set aside at least 15 minutes every day to just BE. Stare out the window. Have a cuppa cocoa. Let your mind wander. Don’t concern yourself with any task. Don’t start obsessing over your to-do list. Your assignment is NOTHING.
Yes, I want you to relax. Our lives can be tremendously fast-paced. We need time to catch our breath. But there is a simple benefit to letting your mind take a stroll—we wind up going to new, unexpected places.
Since you’ve done the Storystorm challenge now for 30 days, story ideation should have become a habit. But with our busy, modern lives, we can easily forget it, let it go. I’m encouraging you to schedule daydreaming time so you continue this habit throughout the year.
Three years ago, when I wrote about creating a habit, I learned it’s easiest to “piggyback” on an established habit. You can tack daydreaming onto your morning routine. Or afternoon coffee break. Or before-bed wind-down.
I find that daydreaming gets me out of story pickles (again with the pickles?) and provides clarity on an existing project. And when I’m done daydreaming, I think about career goals. What do I want to accomplish this week? Month? Year? You need time to think about these things, and not just while you’re sitting at a traffic light.
Scheduled thinking time is something successful business leaders work into their day. You own a business, too—YOU. Being an author is a business and you should be planning that business. Allow for some quiet time every day to not only imagine new stories, but to set goals and to plan. Don’t let this time be interrupted! It may look like NOTHING, but you’re actually WORKING. Literally!
Today is the last official day of Storystorm. Tomorrow, if you have at least 30 ideas, you can sign the Storystorm pledge to be eligible for one of the Grand Prizes: an evaluation of your best 5 ideas by a kidlit agent. If you don’t have 30 ideas yet, consider today a bonus day, the perfect day to start doing nothing.

Pickleball first (even when it is thirty degrees outside) and then daydream! I really do want to get into that habit of just letting my mind wander intentionally. LOL. I have tried to do that at bedtime, but then I just end up falling asleep. I keep saying, when things settle down, I will be more disciplined, but I don’t think they ever really will. So Plan B (or C or D or…) is to work on developing those habits now!
Thanks for the inspiration Tara! I hope you are well.

Storystorm is THE event I am looking forward to in January, among detoxes and nostalgia of past holidays. It hits the spot every year. Many thanks to everyone who contributed; special thanks, Tara, for organizing and making this whole thing fun, your specialty. Thank you so much for this wonderful Storystorm challenge! I’m following the authors that posted on their Instagrams now, and this month has turned on the faucet for me! I find myself adding ideas down into my notebook all day long, inspired by the daily post prompts, life experiences, and little moments. Today I’m continuing to work on yesterday’s post assignments (I’m still in the middle of putting each idea from this month into 1 document). I appreciate the permission to schedule time to do nothing. I’m the type of person who usually feels guilty if I’m not doing something, but your take on scheduling time that looks like doing nothing but is really working sounds like it will be a great thing to try today, and every day! During the challenge, my daughter noticed the picture of your Bloop book and asked me to buy it for her. I bought a copy and intend to save it to give her for an upcoming holiday. I know she will love it; it looks so cute! We also bought your Absurd Words book and I plan on incorporating reading from it into our homeschool routine! Thanks again so much for everything and I already can’t wait for Storystorm to come around again next year! Happy Writing!

Bravo, Tara! I agree100% a scheduled day of “nothing,” a scheduled day of decompressing, or even a few mental health days need to always be on the menu. And I would venture further that writing, being creative, and querying MUST be buttressed with taking a break as the querying trail can be mighty disheartening. One needs those days to regroup, and rebuild. Really connected with your post. 🙂

Thank you so much for organizing Storystorm. I had no idea there would have been so much information and tips and tricks for authors. January flew by as I took notes and brainstormed a few outrageous ideas. I agree with you regarding NOTHING, I often have a break sitting or walking in the woods admiring nature. Then unexpectedly, an idea pops up for another book or WIP.

Dear Tara,
From now on during my 15 minutes of doing NOTHING (when I’m really doing SOMETHING,) and a family member says, “Chop, chop, you should be doing this or that, or I say to myself, “You should be doing this or that,” I’m going to say to myself (or family member) “Tara Lazar said I could do NOTHING (when I’m really doing SOMETHING) for these 15 minutes,” and 😊. I get up at about 5 am every day to have my nothing time. I’m an early morning person and need the quiet to start my day. No one else is up. No one needs my help. I make my coffee and sit with my journal or may nothing at all and just ponder. My favorite mornings are when it’s clear and I can see the stars and planets. One morning during the Geminid meteor showers, from my perch by the window, I saw 10 meteors soar across the sky. It was magical.

Tara, you are a TREASURE! I have so enjoyed Storystorm and have learned so much. I have loved every minute of this experience! The couple of days I had to play catch-up, resulted in some interesting idea combinations that might not have happened if I had done one per day. Thanks to you and the whole team for creating such a great set of prompts and insights in an environment that feels like a ‘good people’ home. I also enjoyed the StoryStorm FB interactions (though I need to learn how to do FB beyond posting/responding in discussion threads).
In the aftermath of this experience I’ve found that it is much like when my then young daughter asked me to help her find triangles in household items/nature… Once you start looking for ideas, you can’t turn it off! PS – I wonder how many people have an idea for a Pickle PB:)

Thank you Tara, such a great reminder to be proactive about ironically scheduling nothing! I was reminded of a technique something like force yourself to think about nothing for 30 sec, 1 min…etc as a brain break.

You know, I schedule just about everything in my calendar, but I have never scheduled “nothing time.” Where have I been all this time! I’ve been thinking I should get away for a quiet weekend to do some nothing, but this is much more sustainable. Thank you, and thank you for Storystorm this year! It’s been so productive for me!

The concept of doing NOTHING is hard in this day and age where the glorification of busy seems a symbol of status and worth. Thank you for this reminder! I DO have 30 ideas and am excited I jumped on this challenge! Thank you!-Macy

Hi Tara, It was my first Storystorm and I loved starting each day by reading the posts and then noodling out an idea by the end of the day. Thank you for this final tip, to schedule some “nothing” time.

Over 30 ideas. Over 30 days. And Storystorm is over again… Thanks, Tara, for a fantastic start to 2024. I’ll take your advice and do nothing… except get a hot tea, bird watch, and daydream.

This was a particularly productive Storystorm for me — over 40 ideas– and I think at least some of them are good! I want to give you a hug for all you do, Tara. (and I just thought of ANOTHER idea!!) I’m all about nothing! Thank you, thank you.

I had to realize that “busy for the sake of it,” “doing for the sake of it,” “being somewhere for the sake of it,” was not aligning with my soul. I am lucky and grateful to have the time to do nothing – but I also realize that I can choose to make time to do nothing. To daydream, create, play. Thanks for one last beautiful Storystorm reminder!

Awesome! Thanks for the reminder that doing “nothing” really is doing “something”, and that it’s just as important. Something way too easy to overlook as we’re paddling the white-waters of the day-to-day. Thank you so much for coordinating Storystorm 2024 – this is my first time – and I looked forward to my daily dose of inspiration in my inbox each day! And now I have lots of fun ideas to sift through moving forward – certainly enough to keep me busy until Storystorm 2025 (:

I feel this. I had “take 5 minutes to look at new habits for 2024” on my to do list for FOUR WEEKS! It took me nearly the entire month of January to take 5 quiet minutes for myself. That was eye-opening for me. Nothing is so important and I will schedule myself some regular nothing.

My ‘nothing time’ is end of day — I sit cross legged and think back through the events of the day (counting off on my fingers) and then allow my mind to wander a bit. Lately, it’s been a wonderful time to generate Storystorm ideas. Thank you for blessing this practice!
And thinking of blessings, what a blessing Storystorm has been! Thank you so much for organising it, to the contributing bloggers and to everyone who posted – it’s been a blast!
So excited to take some of these forward. Xx

Thx, Tara, for another fabulous StoryStorm! It’s such a great way to start the year, and I’m thankful to have the opportunity to jump-start my ideas for 2024. Thanks, too, for this reminder to channel our inner Winnie the Pooh: “…”But what I like doing best is Nothing.” “How do you do Nothing?” asked Pooh, after he had wondered for a long time. “Well, it’s when people call out at you just as you’re going off to do it, What are you going to do Christopher Robin, and you say, Oh, nothing, and you go and do it.” “Oh, I see,” said Pooh. “This is a nothing sort of thing that we’re doing right now.” “Oh, I see,” said Pooh again. “It means just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear and not bothering.” “Oh!” said Pooh.”

From the POV of this beginner author and first time Storystormer-Fantastic!! Thirty days, each of them had me leaping out of bed to see who was featured and read their post.- making notes and sifting through ideas… coming up with more story ideas! Your post today reminding us to pause, to just be and how important that act of stillness is to us is a much needed reminder. Honestly, this is the best advice ever. (And I nearly did a spit-take with your (Please, no pickleball!!!) line, Tara!) HA! One of my favorite quotes on this subject is from Patti Smith, “I daydream a lot – that’s how I get my ideas. If I’m sitting in a café, I’m not on my phone because I want to hear my mind. I think that those periods of small solitude that we are really losing are so important.” Thank you for reminding me/us!

Thank you, Tara, for this opportunity. I can’t wait to open my email in the mornings to read the post each day. It certainly makes the cold, dreary month of January more bearable. I’m sad to see it end – the daily posts that I look forward to reading. But, the knowledge and ideas I gained will give me something to work on all year. I think I will begin my DO NOTHING time savouring my first ever Storystorm event. Over the years, I have jotted down ideas on random pieces of paper. Your nothings, might be my somethings . . . I don’t know where the line came from, or if I got it right, but it’s resonated with me today. Thank you and Storystorm for all the little somethings this month.

I have found when I am laying with my daughter as she falls asleep, I can “write” out text in my brain for stories, and then write them down when I get a chance. Thank you for the reminder that doing nothing is something! (Also she and I love FLAT CAT!)

So true. Appreciate your link on creating habilts and thoughts on friction and piggybacking. Will consider carefully.

Thank you so much, Tara. This has been a joy! I have well over 30 ideas and am excited to see that some of them are like nesting dolls resting inside of each other. I will take your daily resting idea to heart. Many years ago, when I was an elementary librarian, our library mascot was Marc Brown’s Arthur. Every day we repeated a mantra I learned from Marc – Read. Write. Daydream. Draw. (And I still do that every day – I wonder how many of my little library people still do too!)

Doing nothing is so hard (esp. when I love pickleball and could be playing pickleball!). But you’re very right. It’s so important to just stop for a little bit and give the mind a break. I will attempt to try this. LOL. Thanks for Storystorm again this year. I can’t wait to sift through everything.

In the early morning quiet, I read your Post. The silence led to an instant thought: “Who are you now?” My mind went to what I do I do now…NOT what I did in the past. Fifteen minutes later, I felt energized. Thank you, Tara, for your thoughts.
Oh, I did get a few relaxing zzzzz’s afterward.

Hi Tara, Thank you for permission to do nothing. To daydream is to run the business that is me! It’s great to be reminded that planning and deciding happens when you make time to do nothing. Thanks so much for this genius idea month, first as PiBoIdMo and now as Storystorm. You’re the BEST!

Thank you Tara, permission today to “do nothing” and earlier this month permission to procrastinate what more could I ask? But seriously, thank you Tara, for Storystorm, it’s been a great way to start the year, and as this is my year #5 (I think), it is also becoming a wonderfully positive “habit”.

Thanks Tara! It sounds like an upgrade to a beloved children’s book Five Minutes Peace by Jill Murphy to 15 minutes! Funny how doing nothing allows me to hear the inner voice that gets crowded out by all the things.

TARA: I LOVE that I can tell EVERYONE I have PERMISSION to do NOTHING! THANK YOU! But I DEFINITELY will take your suggestion of having a cuppa cocoa to CELEBRATE HAPPY NATIONAL HOT COCOA DAY TODAY! I already put this into practice EVERY DAY, however. I CAN’T GET ANYTHING DONE UNTIL I’VE HAD MY COCOA!!! You are SO RIGHT: Today IS “the perfect day to start doing nothing”–with a bit of cocoa with whipped cream and marshmallows for added INSPIRATION—OF COURSE! THANK YOU!!!

Thank you Tara for organizing Storystorm each year. I’ve been doing nothing for awhile so I better start using this excuse anytime since I’m an old fogey and you can get away with some things but not others. Going to organize the 30+ ideas ( as one of your friends article mentioned) Thank You.

Thanks for the break…I want you to set aside at least 15 minutes every day to just BE. Stare out the window. Have a cuppa cocoa. Let your mind wander. Don’t concern yourself with any task. Don’t start obsessing over your to-do list. Your assignment is NOTHING.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you! I needed this today. Thank you for permission to do nothing. I grew up in a family system that equated productivity, achievement, and service with worth, so forcing myself to be still is a challenge. Thank you for reminding me that stillness is not only good, but necessary. Thank you for reminding me to prioritize time to let my imagination wonder and scheduled as part of my day. I already added it to my 2024 calendar!

Thanks so much Tara. It was an amazing month. My story idea list is long, but so is my reading list. You corralled the most creative folks to contribute to this. Doin nothin ain’t for nothin.
Every piece of visual art needs some breathing space.
That’s something Pollock never realized
but since all his canvases were splattered all over,
maybe that turns the entire thing into scattered breathing space.
I have a big window that looks out to the trees.
The only thing between the building and the trees
are an alumnium fence, bird feeders, and a couple of big fat squirrels.

Tara, this has gone SOOOOO fast! Thank you for your wonderful advice (I went back to read the referenced article too). I have found that the piggybacking actually helped set thinking habits and expectations that, along with certain activities (the piggybacked ones), creative ideas would just begin to flow, lines of poetry would come, scenarios would stand out that had come into view… because I was READY for them, and they were a ‘part’ of that activity. Thank you so much for offering StoryStorm, for all the wonderful posts and all the work that goes into securing them. You are amazing!

I got something from every post, not certain I can call them New Ideas, was just great to see other’s process and see how they work so hard and find success! One thing that really struck me is just how time consuming pursuing a finished picture book is and how never to lose hope that I may one day make it!!! Thanks to all the presenters and to Tara for ramrodding the rodeo!

Thank you Tara for an amazing month of inspiration! I will not underestimate the power of doing nothing. My daughter was watching Winnie the Pooh today, and I have to laugh, because Christopher Robin and Pooh do “Nothing”. I think kids subconsciously know how essential and rejuvenating doing “Nothing” is, and as adults, we kind of forget about it and therefore have to schedule it in.

Love this. I great reminder to let go, and let the universe in. And then, get back to business. Having pets helps me with this, as they demand ‘me’ time; so I spend time doing nothing but loving on them. Purr-fect you might say. Thanks for another wonderful month of support and surprises. 🙂

Sing to the tune of “I got a lot of living to do” from Bye Bye Birdie – “I got a lot of NOTHING to do!” Starting today, doing nothing is going right before back exercises on my daily calendar. Such a smart and important suggestion. Thank you for the reminder, and for all 31 days.

Great post for the final day, Tara. The idea of making ‘thinking time’ a habit and piggybacking it onto a specific moment in our days; the idea of setting goals and planning; the assignment of doing ‘nothing.’ So many wonderful and helpful suggestions from the featured guests this year. Thanks for another incredible month of Storystorm!

Really like the idea of habit-stacking, and more power to daydreaming – so often I can get fidgety when doing nothing as I feel I need to be ‘achieving’ something. But this is a great way to look at it, and it’s such a valuable thing to do as well. Thank you. And thank you for StoryStorm, it’s been my first time and I have got such a huge amount out of it (not to mention a v long list of ideas to work on this year!).
