by Teresa Ho Robeson
According to my “Ideas” notebook, I’ve been participating in Storystorm since 2014 (back in its PiBoIdMo days), though I swear I’ve been doing it for longer.

In those nine years, I’ve written down about 270 ideas from the random ones floating in the universe like dandelion fluff (according to Elizabeth Gilbert in her BIG MAGIC book).
Of those 270 I managed to capture in my notebook, I have drafted eight, thanks to 12×12, the other challenge besides Storystorm that help me keep my ducks writing life in a row.
Even though I haven’t sold any of those eight manuscripts, and nine other ideas have already appeared as books by others (Elizabeth was right!), I still find myself with an abundance of ideas on my list and not enough time to write them all. After all, even if I only took a month to write and polish one picture book from an idea, it would take me over twenty-two years to write all 270+ of them. And I keep accumulating more from doing Storystorm year after year.
But there is a solution of sorts! And I stumbled upon it unexpectedly.
I was recently approached by a publisher to write a nonfiction middle grade book for a fun concept an illustrator thought of. While drafting the book, seven story ideas from various years of brainstorming managed to show up at the party and became a part of that book. Also, two more ideas ended up in another nonfiction middle grade book (my own concept this time) I’m writing for a different editor! And I didn’t even realize I had included those ideas until I flipped through my notebook and noticed them after drafting both books.
That’s when I smacked my forehead and had a eureka moment.
Who said that each Storystorm idea had to lead to a single story? Surely not Chief Lazar of the Storystorm Police Department. Instead, why not consolidate two or more ideas into a single manuscript?
I had already done this, by accident, but now I plan to do it on and with purpose. When I’m wanting something new to write, I will read through my entire notebook of ideas and try to smash things together like an author cyclotron.

Sometimes I might put similar ideas with each other to create a thesis for a longer work (as in the NF MGs I mentioned above). But other times, I can randomly pair wildly disparate ideas to create really cool and unique plots or situations for fiction, too.
So, by the power vested in me by the State of (Writerly) Affairs, I hereby grant you permission to do the same! At the end of the year’s challenge, when you look back on all your wild and wonderful ideas, if single ones aren’t leading to worthwhile stories, smash a bunch of them together to create BIGGER MAGIC, and possibly better stories.

Teresa Ho Robeson is giving the winner the choice of either a signed copy of WHO IS TIBET’S EXILED LEADER? THE 14TH DALAI LAMA (Penguin Workshop) or a critique of a nonfiction picture book manuscript under 1,000 words.
You’re eligible to win if you’re a registered Storystorm 2024 participant and you have commented only once on today’s blog post.
Prizes will be distributed at the conclusion of Storystorm.

Brilliant post — from author cyclotron, to BIGGER MAGIC to Chief Lazar of the Storystorm Police Department. Your post made me laugh and made me think of some ways I can smash things up this year. Thanks Teresa! Congratulations on your books!

I love this! One of my favorite manuscripts I’ve written was a mash up of ideas that weren’t seeming to work by themselves but I knew something was there. I’m definitely going to try this if I’m fumbling with individual ideas when I got to draft.

Thanks for your suggestions on how to use our ideas. We’re just writing down random thoughts. They can be used however we want to use them. The point right now is to capture them for future reference, whatever that may be. I like your scientific references.

Thanks for the suggestion to put ideas together, and your books sound fantastic! I think it is so cool that you grow your own food. I keep unsuccessfully trying to regrow celery from scrap and tried canning for the 1st time recently. All of the things mentioned in your bio takes so much time and work to do! Do you plan to write how-to’s for gardening, canning, soap making, etc. from your experiences?

I think I’d need one of your books as a mentor text. I’ve written a MG mystery which is a mash up as you mentioned in your post with enviromental tie-ins about mining and organic agriculture, etc. Many critique partners said there was too much going on. Which MG book would you recommend I read? My stroriest always have some kind of environmetal tie-ins, most are PBs-informational fiction. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for this inspiring post, Teresa. I do believe the act of writing down our ideas helps lock them into our creative sub-conscious, and how cool that some of your ideas snuck into your other stories, as if they had a mind of their own! I, too, am a big fan of Big Magic. I actually wrote a blog post about it back on Nov 9, 2017. Your post today prompted me to re-read that post, something I hadn’t done in a very long time. I’ve published four books since writing that post and making a commitment to being the “human partner” to several ideas that have knocked on my door. Interestingly, the particular story idea at the core of that post has not yet been acquired by a publisher, but it’s one of the stories I still feel a strong pull and commitment to. Now I remember why. Thank you again, Teresa. I look forward to following your work.

Hi Teresa! I loved this post so much–let me count the ways…
I counted silently so as to avoid a very long reply. I shall narrow it down to three and “smash” them together:
“Surely not Chief Lazar of the Storystorm Police Department.” “Instead, why not consolidate two or more ideas into a single manuscript?”
“So, by the power vested in me by the State of (Writerly) Affairs, I hereby grant you permission to do the same!”
Thank you for the permission! The laughs! A new idea. And an incredibly fun challenge!

I have done the same! In fact, in my critique group the other night, one of my critique partners was like, “I feel like we have seen this story before, but I don’t really remember it.”
That is because I had taken 2 stories and new Story Storm idea from this year and mashed them together. Take one part plot, two parts character and add a dash of a new voice and viola!

Fantastic post, Teresa! Now that you mention it, I’ve done this in my own writing as well. In the case of picture books, editors seem to appreciate multiple layers (versus a “thin” story), and uniting different ideas can definitely lead to a more engaging arc and more meaningful takeaway(s).

I have been implementing Day# 13’s, Laurel Neme’s: searchable catalog. Looks like I’ll cut and paste the ideas and shuffle them to see what comes together.
Thank you, Teresa, and Congratulations on your published books and perseverance.

Author cyclotron! Brilliant. I have so many unused ideas from over the years that I have been holding onto “just in case”. But many rarely provide any joy anymore, so I had been pondering bidding them adieu. But now I have a great new way to play with those raindrops… Thanks, Teresa!

Writing exercises to combine seemingly different concepts has resulted in exciting findings before. In Storystorm, I have often written subideas or variations of the same idea in my records. These ideas can become helpful in using this technique. I want to try this and see what comes up. Thank you for the post.

Thanks for the freeing advice Teresa! I sometimes put two guitar riffs or piano parts that are unrelated together, and it worked a few times, so I am going to go back to the last few snippets I recorded on my ipad and see if there is a way to connect them, especially if I make them in the same key. I hadn’t thought of transposing until reading your post. I always enjoy reading your books and learning about people we should have known about, or known more about. Congratulations on your continued writing joy and success.

Great suggestion, Teresa! I’ve been capturing ideas this time around with middle grade in mind. Some of the ideas are for scenes and some are single plot points, character moments, or character traits. So by the nature of them, I think several might end up in the same project. We’ll see!

I love the concept of this idea–what a breakthrough! I also realized that if I look over my old notes and ideas, they’ll be stored more readily in my subconscious, so when I reach for a character trait or plot device or solution, an “old” idea will rise to the surface more easily. In other words, it’s all useful in one way or another. =) Thank you!

This is so timely. It just so happened that I did this with the last two ideas on my Storystorm list. This shows that the work we do during this month tucks the ideas away in our own minds even if we aren’t completely aware they’ve stuck with us! Congrats on your successes!

Chief Lazar or the Storystorm Police Dept…… That made me giggle. But I get it….we don’t need permission. We just need to do it as we see fit.

I have also stumbled upon this magic gem unsuspecting as well. I have enjoyed drafting a few outlines with ideas I had gathered as individuals but are now buddy ideas. It really is fun to see what can be combined.

Ok, I LOVE the idea of combining ideas – now to figure out a way to organize all my notebooks and ideas. (I think I’m going to leave a blank page at the start of the next one and make an index…)

Sounds like a fun and realistic way to get your ideas out there! I like when you said if you tried to write all those ideas it would take you all of those years to complete them! Makes sense to smash away! Thank you for this sound advice!

I’m going to do two things: 1) look for two different ideas and smash them together, and 2) look through previous Storystorm ideas for a theme!

OMG I just had that same idea for a chapter book that I am trying to write. (just before reading this post) Those ideas must come in multiples. It’s always fun to see things like that happen. I’m working hard on finding a home for my NF picture book I wrote in your class. Thanks for your ideas shared during class and in this fun post.
