Confession: I am a Hallmark movie-aholic!

I love having them on in the background while I work (even if I have to keep the sound off in order to concentrate). I love watching them with the sound on and reveling in the “happy ending” structure that is oh-so predictable and much needed in this chaotic world.
I also love reading (or listening to) romance novels. It’s a fun way to dissect story beats, enjoy happy endings, and of course, immerse yourself in someone else’s world for a little while.
Here’s the best part, while reading or enjoying Hallmark movie marathons, you can find ideas.
Here are a few examples: (I wish I wrote down the titles of the movies from which I snagged these, but alas, I didn’t.)
Scene:
A picture frame falls out of a child’s bag at the airport. She had decorated it as a gift.
Idea:
What about a picture book about Mother’s Day in which the MC can’t think of anything special and ultimately realizes that she is the gift. She decorates a picture frame with a picture of herself in the center. (Can you just see the sweetness of that final spread?)
Conflict Set Up:
The main character is a reporter. Her job ends up in direct conflict with her “love interest.”
Idea:
What if you have a child reporter as your MC in either a young graphic novel, chapter book, or picture book? The child MC might investigate stories in the neighborhood and bring them to light. At first, she brings them to light in a hurtful way. And so… her emotional journey is to figure out a way to bring the stories to light responsibly. (Do no harm.)
Movie Theme:
Valentine’s Day Themed Hallmark Movie
Idea:
What would happen if a child makes a Valentine’s Day card for a friend, but it ends up in the wrong hands?
Ooooh, and I got a nonfiction idea while looking up gifs for this. (See gif below.) If flamingos put their heads together, they form a heart. What other animals can make a heart with their bodies? (Dragonflies do when they mate!) There must be more!!

Remember, ideas are nuggets we capture and write down without dissecting them or assessing their worth. Our job during Storystorm is to generate ideas with as little judgment as possible.
Let your pen fly! Catch each idea. Then, later, you can assess them, combine them, turn them upside down, and massage them into fantastic stories.
So, consider this post an invitation to watch those movies you want to watch! Enjoy television. Read lots of books. And keep your notebook handy. You’ll be surprised by how many ideas you will find.

Lauren is offering two prizes: a 60-minute Zoom Critique Session and a copy of her latest book, REMEMBERING SUNDAYS WITH GRANDPA (Illustrated by Nanette Regan/Beaming Books) to two separate winners.

This is wonderful, Lauren! What great encouragement to always be on the lookout for fresh ideas, even in unexpected places. 😊 (ps, loved all your example ideas, particularly one about animals making hearts with their bodies! That could be so cute and fun.)

Lauren, what a fun outlook taking, perhaps, guilty pleasures, and turning them into possible treasures. I appreciate what you said about not judging our ideas, but allowing them to be. Helpful for those of us with perfectionist leanings.
Looking forward to reading RSWG.

I love the idea of watching films for inspiration although I would get so distracted by films playing in the background as I write! The flamingo fact is really fascinating and has sparked today’s Storystorm idea!

My takeaway is that ideas can come from unlikely places if you are open to them. Sometimes something simple can spark an idea and we should write it down for future reference. Thanks for reminding us to always be on the lookout for new ideas.

Such fun possibilities! Yes to no judgment, although that can be hard. (I already put a note “A bad idea” after one of my Storystorm ideas–I’m not sure why I felt the need to do that.) So important to keeping the mind and heart open (for more reasons than writing).

Thank you for these suggestions! It’s helpful to remember that ideas are everywhere. And your comment about turning off the sound reminded me of a project I did in grad school. While your intention was so that the comfort was there without the audio distraction, I was reminded that actively watching a video without the sound naturally alters the way we consume the information. We could also get ideas by watching a video we aren’t familiar with and having our brains tell us what’s happening. That may help inspire future manuscript ideas. After all, they’re everywhere!

Hello, Fellow Hallmark movie watcher. Till now, this was a “closet” item, but now, I’m out. Lauren,
“Let your pen fly!” That’s my new mantra when I brainstorm this year. I’m dumping, Ms. Judgement. Trashing Mr. Doubt. When I watch a Hallmark movie, I try to predict plot twists/hurdles before they happen, which has helped me focus on story structure. Too often I get caught up in my MC that my structure turns out more like octopus arms. Thank you for your post. Sending you energy and inspiration for your continued success….

This is a perfect low-stakes idea generator. I’ve been reading about how resolutions fail when the goal is too hard to achieve and are more easily achieved when integrated into your lifestyle. This prompt fits the bill.

I am NOT, by nature, a romance movie watcher or reader of said books, but recently I read a lovely “Hallmark-eques” novel that brought on all the feels and YES, did cause me to pause about how some of the key ingredients might be good PB nuggets. I have to admit, I’ve never actually watched a Hallmark movie! Maybe this will be my excuse to start! Either way, I appreciate how easily this prompt can be applied to making a mindful effort to focus in on micro moments or freeze frames from any movie, show, and/or bits of life happening in front of us to make a mental note of that could turn into the start of its own story. Thanks so much!

Lauren, What a helpful post! Thank you for sharing your writer’s perspective in your description of the way you encounter/watch/enjoy movies and books! Capturing scenes that foreshadow, represent relationships, or develop symbolic meaning over the course of a movie or novel can help us come up with other “what if” scenarios that could develop into other stories as well. Keeping the notebook handy while reading/watching other stories unfolding is a good idea!

THANK YOU for the reminder to ALWAYS be on the lookout for story ideas, and to write them down so they are there LATER ON to “assess them, combine them, turn them upside down, and massage them into fantastic stories.” And THANK YOU for the invitation to BINGE on GREAT movies and books to find some SPECIAL story idea nuggets! I’ll keep reminding myself I’m ACTUALLY working whilst doing so!!! 😉

I have to confess that as a child trauma therapist, I too am often in need of a happy ending, and now I can say it’s for research 🙂

Shh. Don’t tell anyone that I love Hallmark movies. Yes they are predictable, but I love to follow the beats. A great learning experience.
January 27, 2024 at 3:43 pm

It really is fun to predict where we are in the story beat-wise and percentage-wise and Hallmark movies (and romance novels) are a gift in that department!

What a great idea! I watch lots of tv. Like you, I use it as background noise. I don’t like Hallmark movies, but I LOVE British television. Now to start looking for ideas in Pride and Prejudice and Downton Abbey!!! Thank you!

Thanks, Lauren for the idea of listening in to movies and tv shows for ideas. I will keep my idea book handy. Your ideas already inspired a couple of ideas. I love that you say to write courageously!

Honestly, I think we all write courageously. The act of “bleeding onto the page” as Ernest Hemingway said, is scary!

First of all, I appreciate your admitting you like the sappy predictable shows. I watch “Good Witch” and I quickly turn off the tv when my son or husband walks by b/c it’s a bit embarrassing. For the Brit and Hallmark lovers, “Bank of Dave” on Netflix checks both boxes. I’m stuck at the Honda dealership right now so I’m trying to remember what I watched last night to think of some story ideas! Thanks for the prompt.

No idea – or source – too small, and it’s fun to hear that you draw some ideas from Hallmark movies. I like the permission to just jot down an idea and not have to enlarge it during Storystorm. Thank you!

Confession: I watched my first Hallmark movie this past December and now I can see exactly what you mean. As someone with powerful inner critic, I saw this line and nodded in agreement.

Great post! Years ago, during my first StoryStorm, I wondered how I could possibly come up with 30 ideas. And today, while reading something for work, what I was reading sparked 3 ideas—all in a matter of momutes. Looking forward to tuning into a Hallmark movie and seeing what ideas that generates.

Thanks so much, Lauren! While I don’t watch Hallmark movies myself, I do

sparks an idea. The key is for me to be able to quick write it down
