Does Storystorm have superfans? Yes. Yes it does. This is the story of one. Let’s call him StormerX.
- December 2015. StormerX participates in his first Storystorm (PiBoIdMo). He is hooked!
- January 2018. The PB world is in its usual euphoric Storystorm frenzy of ideas and motivation. StormerX is joyfully sketching out his 30(+) ideas inspired by the encouragement of the bloggers and his fellow writers.
- February 2018. Storystorm comes to an end. StormerX is experiencing PSB (Post Storystorm Blues). No more blogs! No more ideas! No more being surrounded by other writers! Fortunately, the spirit of Storystorm doesn’t fade quickly. Inspiration is still dancing in his heart. What if he…doesn’t stop? What if he…continues generating ideas for another month?
The following months. Then, another month? And another? And another?
Fast forward to today! StormerX has never stopped. He has created at least one idea a day for…
- Over SIX YEARS.
- That’s 74 months.
- 2222 days.
- All resulting in 2496 ideas!
Now, I can sense what you’re thinking—What’s wrong with that guy?
You may also be thinking—David, is that obsessive oddball you?
It appears that for as clever as I have been, you’ve seen right through me. Yes, I am StormerX.
Let me explain. I am by nature a procrastinator. Also, a dilly-dallier, a fidgeter, a tinkerer, a meanderer and a doodler. I know many of you identify as at least one of these. And I know you all have different strategies you use to cope.
I personally need an anchor, something that holds everything in place. Giving myself one simple writing related task that I do every day, helps me focus. Daily idea generation has become one of the most important tools on my writing journey. I never go to bed without having jotted down at least one idea in my idea book. (Here’s the shiny little fella, now.)
This is how creating one idea a day has been of benefit to me:
- Routine and structure: Adding routine into one aspect of my life has made it easier to create routine in other aspects of my life. Routine has been shown to reduce stress. Who doesn’t want that?
- A constant reminder: Even if it’s just for 30 seconds, I think about writing every day. And because writing is often on my mind, I find myself wanting to do even more writerly things—improve my craft, engage with other writers, submit manuscripts, read, revise, and oh, actually write.
- Quantity: I write more. I am never without something to work on – At any moment I can just peruse my idea book, grab a pencil, and see where it takes me.
- Quality: This is partly a numbers game. With a new idea every day, there are bound to be a few winners. And it’s become easier to assess which ideas I think are the most writable (and hopefully, sellable).
- Confidence: This is maybe my favorite perk. I’ve stoped worrying if my ideas are good or marketable or kid-friendly or difficult or offensive or weird. I simply let the pencil do its thing. My writing feels more creative, more daring, and more honest than ever before.
- And one last benefit: On May 19, 2018 I wrote the following in my idea book – When Jeremy met Fabulina. Jeremy is now Daniel, and Daniel never meets Fabulina, but on April 30th that scrap of an idea becomes my debut picture book, FREE TO BE FABULOUS! with Clarion Books, exquisitely illustrated by Robbie Cathro. If I had not been jotting down so many ideas this one may never have existed.
Remember, this is what works for me. You may find a different strategy that works better for you. Only weekdays? Saturday mornings? Whatever you choose, try to be consistent. And make sure it’s easy and fun—this should be helpful, not a chore.
If daily idea generating isn’t your thing, here are other simple anchors you can use:
- A daily affirmation.
- Writing sprints: Set a timer and write. 10 minutes?
- Set a daily word count goal.
- Read one picture book. (Heck, read half a picture book.)
- Read one kidlit blog post.
- Build community with a post or comment on social media.
- Write in a journal.
- Learn one of Tara’s fun, cool and interesting words.
- Mix and match several of these.
I know most of you are Storystorm superfans, too. (I’ve seen those participant badges popping up all over social media.) How can we not be, am I right? Have a great month and STORM ON!
Note: I recommend giving yourself an awesome Storystorm nickname. It will help you feel more in tune with your inner superfan. (Sorry, StormerX is taken.)
David McMullin is giving away a fiction critique, an Ask Me Anything Zoom call, or a combo of the two.
You’re eligible to win if you’re a registered Storystorm 2024 participant and you have commented only once on today’s blog post.
Prizes will be distributed at the conclusion of Storystorm.

This was really great. I am committed to a daily writing habit, but that is WORK!! I want to play, as well. I want a FUN habit, too! thank you for the inspiration. Haha! A Storystorm nickname…I love that! 🙂 Thanks for this upbeat post reiterating simple, yet amazing ideas which often get forgotten due to this thing called ‘life’. I often need to remind myself about – having a writing routine, structure, an idea every day, etc.

Dear David, you seem like a fun guy to hang out with. I especially liked Constant reminder- Since I’ve been reading every post here I brainstrom every night. Wow, David – that’s A LOT of ideas! Amazing that you’ve been able to
commit to this eery single day. I used to TRY and write one haiku per
day (mind you, I am not a poet) – but this almost felt too challenging.
Some days I wrote something, other days, I struggled – and so the
routine went the way of all other well-intended routines that didn’t
quite take hold. I love your reminder to keep it simple and fun – and
I’d like to try and get back on track with some sort of daily “writerly”
task (I love that word). Thanks so much for this, David!

Love, this David! I once heard that Dolly Parton wrote a song a day. So I have tried to write a story a day for a few years. I only get about one a week. But the practice has made me more aware of all the ideas hanging around out there.

This blog post is AMAZING! I’m so inspired by you! My favorite part of writing is creating new ideas, and this has given me the freedom to not overthink and go with whatever the pencil wants to pursue. Overtaking has kept me stuck. Incredible that you’ve done this for 6 YEARS! Thanks for this message!
January 9, 2024 at 11:05 am

The honesty here is inspiring: The same tactic won’t work for us all, so searching through them to find that does work for you is key! My personal tactic is to keep notebooks and writing utensils everywhere (waterproof shower notebook, note app on phone, pen and tiny notebook in purse, etc.). For me, ideas ruminate, then start spilling out when they’re ready, so I’ve learned I have to be ready to jot them down the moment they come to fruition, or they’ll be lost forever!

Go StormerX! 🙂 I had that same thought last year when February 1st came and for a few days I kept at it until my world’s pressures kicked in harder and it was set aside. That said, I did a pretty good job at spending time once a week or so just brainstorming ideas and ended the year with a pretty nice bunch to add to my storystorm stack! Thanks for the encouragement and congrats on your upcoming book!

This is fun! I keep a running list of ideas in the notes app on my phone! I used to write way more ideas down when I first started on this journey a few years ago— ideas just seemed to pop out everywhere! Though now I’ll look back on some of those earlier ones, and I haven’t the slightest idea what it is I was intending that idea to be. But it is always something to ponder and think about!

I like the idea of an idea a day to increase the odds of coming up with a good one. Unfortunately, I identify too much with the procrastinator/dilly dallyer so I’ll have to find a cure for that first!

StormerX? Love it! Daily word counts don’t work for me because I’m always working on specific projects. Like you, I journal, but what works for me is a journal notebook for each project where I record everything – questions, thoughts, sparks, impressions. Thanks for this thoughtful post!

I LOVE the idea of generating a new idea every day because:
1. YES to thinking about writing every day
2. YES to tossing worry off a cliff
This could work for me! I’ll be Nor’easter for now. Can’t think of a better StoryStorm name.

Thank you for offering the alternative anchors, I might find it easier to stick to a routine if I have a little variety in it. Maybe dilly dallying is a superpower in this age of goal setting and accomplishment?

Fellow procrastinator here…and you’re absolutely right. Having a specific structure helps keep me on task. If it wasn’t for the Duolingo, I wouldn’t have been studying a language every day for the past 4 years. That’s why contests like #StoryStorm are so helpful in my writing practice! Now I’m off to see if I can reach 2000+ ideas!

That is the great thing about having so many ideas, it is easier to set bad ones aside. When I tell people I have a large number of manuscripts, they are always amazed. I then let them know that most will never see the light of day, but that also means that I have a few really good ones, even if I am the only one who thinks so.

Go, Stormracer. Go Stormracer. Go, Stormracer, Go-ooooo! I like to start my day with a sheet of Morning Thoughts or dream logging. When I have an early work day, I try to end my day with it. I write in in the same place every day, my writing shed with everything in it except a bathroom. I have to go back to the house ,sometime.

Setting routines is a routine in and of itself for me! While I think I tend to get wrapped up in my own routines, er, I mean world, it’s nice to hear others stressing the importance of this step. For me, a few routines are my constant motivators, and though new to Storystorming, it has proven beneficial in many ways already, only 9 days in! Work, home, personally, and socially.
Thank you,StormerX, Tara, and all other continuing mentors you may have known yourselves to be!

Love it! Especially the way you framed one consistent daily writing activity as an anchor for routine. I’ve traditionally used Morning Pages, which can include idea generation, but I like the goal of trying to write one new idea down each day, however simple or unformed. Thank you David!

This post resonated with me because I definitely need structure in my life. The busier I am, the more I accomplish. One of the reasons I left teaching was the long breaks where I wasn’t in my normal schedule. They were mostly unproductive for me, even though I always began the summer with great aspirations for all I’d accomplish “with so much time on my hands”.

once you write your idea each day, how do you know when to stop on an idea and write THAT story? As you write the one story, do you keep writing an idea a day or pause?
January 12, 2024 at 4:20 am
David McMullin
I write any story that I find fun and interesting. I don’t worry about it being THE ONE. If the story isn’t coming together I move on to the next one. Eventually one really clicks, but I don’t worry about every story being the one I will publish. I never pause on the ideas, that daily routine is more about momentum than good ideas.

I am not active on social media. Do you have an email or way of connection so we can stay in touch? Also, what is your editing/revision process like? Do you have a critique partner or two? Do you rely on yourself fully for revising? I tend to think there are too many cooks in a kitchen, it’s not the best ingredient for a final draft. How do you know your draft is complete?

It is quite interesting that since you have started this routine you have found your ideas to be more daring and honest. I like that. It’s so easy to have an idea and then squash it immediately before it even has time to bloom for fear of any number of things. But I could imagine with repetition that would naturally fizzle out. Thank you. Congratulations on your book!

“Quality: This is partly a numbers game. With a new idea every day, there are bound to be a few winners. And it’s become easier to assess which ideas I think are the most writable (and hopefully, sellable).”

I totally agree. Not every idea I’ve come up with is marketable but sometimes you need to come up with ten okay (or even lousy) ideas before you find that one great idea to work with.

I love this post so much!! Inspired by a combination of StoryStorm and a blog Jess Keating wrote on writing down “one amazing thing” per day, I have kept a writing notebook for the past several years. I try to write down at least one idea per day, along with celebrations, goals, notes, etc. Your post is such an encouragement that some of these ideas might just become books on shelves someday. Thank you so much for sharing with us, and congratulations on your debut!

I love this. I so often get bogged down in thinking I have to spend MORE time on writing, and actually spend none because it’s overwhelming. One idea a day is doable – as is the writing sprint. And the reading. (Maybe I’ll eventually get through all those books on my shelves.)

Had am ‘aha’ moment when reading through this post. I have been ‘visited’ by different characters, settings etc over the years, but haven’t thought of them as story ideas, so I’ve let them float away. (Don’t know why, but I thought a story idea was a fully fledged narrative arc, rather than a random character, or title etc) Very keen to capture these from now on – and daily! Thank you!!
