Words—if you’re a writer, you love them. You NEED them. They’re our story building blocks.
I love the sound of certain words, the way they slide off the tongue. My book ABSURD WORDS began when I ran across the word “archipelago”. I stopped reading, transfixed by the exotic and lovely term for an island chain. I wrote it down…and my “favorite word list” began.
Whenever I read a fantastic word, in a crossword puzzle, novel, or news article, I wrote it down. When I heard it in a movie, TV show, or YouTube video, I wrote it down. I wanted to keep the good words close.
Since the Internet loves a list, I slapped the words on this website. Then when the list became the most heavily-accessed page on this site, I pitched my agent the concept for ABSURD WORDS.
I know, it’s not a picture book. A picture book brimming with substantial words isn’t fit for the age group. However, a wondrous word on its own can conjure up ideas for marvelous picture book stories!
Let’s go back to “archipelago”. This word was featured in the Christmas stop-motion classic “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” to describe the location of The Island of Misfit Toys.

Toys! Misfits! On an island far away! Longing for a child to love them! Did all these ideas originate with the word “archipelago”? Maybe???
I don’t shy away from using difficult words in my picture books, as long as I use them sparingly and in context so their meaning can be sussed out. But I’m not suggesting you just slip “labyrinth” into your story—I am encouraging you to begin with “labyrinth” to discover where it leads. What ideas spring forth? Children love secretive places about which adults are clueless—so where does your “labyrinth” story go?
I’ve got more words to love!
- zhuzh
- scrumble
- derring-do
- sardoodledom
- swellhead
- finicky
- pareidolia
- gravitas
- moonbow
- fiddlesticks
- galactico
- jimberjawed
- shackbaggerly
- soliloquy
- nonuplets
- cahoots
- sticktoitiveness
- againwend
- flipperling
Plus, of course, the entire original list!
But you don’t necessarily need my lists. Think of your favorite word as a jump-start. Thumb through a dictionary. Devour a thesaurus.
Words can take us (and our readers) anywhere we want to go!

A friend recently posted a great word on Facebook: Coddiwomple: To travel purposefully toward an as-yet-unknown destination. She challenged anyone to use it in a sentence. Of course I wrote not just a sentence but a whole poem. It’s too good a word for just one sentence! 🙂

Another fun thing to do is to take a story you have written and make a word cloud out of key words and themes. It’s interesting to look at your story in words, rather than sentences.

Thanks Tara! I feel ‘seen’. I was the one neighborhood shenanigans in order to continue reading the dictionary as a kid. I really appreciate the idea of not just using a big word but seeing what else comes from investigating that word. One thing I’d like to do in 2024 is collect fun words ‘of old’ especially those in the UK. Done of the words, still in use but scrubbed from printings for the US, are delectable! Happy Hogmanay! 🎉

This is a perfect start to Storystorm; Happy 2024! Thanks so much for this, I love looking forward to these daily posts, prompts, & community! Over the summer I got to meet a band who are singers and songwriters, so I asked them for their favorite writing advice or prompt. There is something to this, and I’m so excited to implement this suggestion from him, and now also from you, today!!!!

Zhuzh, Tara! You started us out in 2024 with such a fun way to generate story ideas. I’ve always loved Winnie-the-Pooh’s heffalump. You’d laugh at all of the dog-eared pages in my Absurd Words book. I was just rifling through it yesterday to come up with a better word than BINGO. And, BINGO! Thanks to you, I did.
Here’s my Day 1 list: bumfuzzle, fiddle-dee-dee, blunderbluss, and kerfluffle. Sending you thanks for all you do for us…

Thank you! I just added a ‘gazillion’ words to MY list.
One of my word lists: I subscribe to dictionary.com’s Word of the Day. If I think a word is fun, or if I plan to do something with a particular word sometime in the future, I slide the Word of the Day page into the email mailbox I created . . . ‘easy peasy.’

This reminds me of some research that came out from York University a few years ago- there was a list of words that had fallen out of use and one of them was “Sillytonian”- someone who lived in a community where everything everyone did was silly. It gave me lots of ideas for the sillytonians and their adventures!

This is a great first post of the new year and the new Storystorm. The word labyrinth actually reminded me of a story I intended to write in 2023 but forgot or procrastinated? My favorite hard word of my childhood was the word onomatopoeia. It sounds the same in English as it does in my native language, Polish, in which I first encountered this word. I must have been 7 or 8 when I first heard it, and I loved saying it over and over again. I still like saying it. It flows so perfectly off the tongue.

I hate this time of year because it’s cold, and the holidays are over, and I have to start putting decorations away. Yuck. But then there is Storystorm, and I get to ignore those pesky decorations and do what I love! With permission! Because we have to write down our ideas everyday! And I want to expand on them, and print them off and go back and refer to them! And build again! …. And who cares if the decorations get put away in July! 😝 Thank you, Tara!

This post strikes a chord with me. At a recent school visit I found myself sharing favorite words from my books. While introducing the students to “hoodoo” and “spelunk,” I remembered the moments when I wrote those words in, with delight, and wondered if the books would even have been inspired in the first place without them.

Great post, Tara! And happy new year! I’m old enough to remember using actual dictionaries to look up words– and my father would NEVER tell me what a new word meant, he always said “Look it up! Then you’ll remember it!” He was right. So many cool new words came from that– two notables: lugubrious and lagniappe. 🙂

TARA: I LITERALLY JUST finished watching “Rudolph”–and visiting that SWEET archipelago, The Island of Misfit Toys!–before reading this post! A MUST EVERY YEAR for me (though a little late now that it’s a new year!)! You are SO RIGHT: Words are where it all begins! Ideas can sprout from just a single, “simple” word. All we have to do is “follow where they lead.” Here’s one for you: “Tak”= “Thanks” in Danish!

My favorite word, Tara? Strength. I love the way it sounds – the glorious consonant cluster at the beginning, a quick single vowel sound in the middle, and then a second consonant cluster at the end. And having a positive meaning? Well, thatʻs just gravy.

Words are amazing. The very first (very bad) picture book draft I ever wrote was inspired by a word I loved, but I haven’t been using this technique much since. Thanks for the reminder – and for the amazing list of words! My nephew and I had so much fun jumping around in your Absurd Words book looking for the ones that really spoke to us. BAM! A three-letter word that stops the reader in their tracks. Encompass. The mere mention of this word feels like being wrapped in a warm blanket. It’s amazing how one simple word can evoke a specific emotion. I guess that’s why I’m drawn to poetry–every word counts. Two favorites off the top of my head:
“alacrity”, which according to Merriam Webster is “promptness in response: cheerful readiness” – a word I often used with my children when they were dragging their feet,
and “hollerday”, my young son’s appropriate mispronunciation of holiday.

Happy New Year! I spent last week reflecting on my year and made some changes on how I would proceed so I could complete my projects.
One of the things I decided for 2024 was to begin my day doing writing exercises using my lists of unfamiliar words I jot down occasionally. And then, I read your post today and learned another way of thinking about words. I appreciate the idea; it will be a helpful addition to my morning practice.

In the past, I’ve used the dictionary.com app as a jumpstart for a sketchbook page. Their word of the day feature is great, and often, it is slyly commenting on current events. Looks like I need to start that up again! Thanks, Tara!

I bought Absurd Words last year after joining my first Storystorm. I love sharing words with my children and students. I love how Tara says she doesn’t shy aware from difficult words in her picture books, as long as it’s done sparingly and so a child can figure out meaning within the context.

some time in 2012, a friend gave me the gift of a leather bound note book with a tree embossed on the cover. I was to hang my words on the tree until ripe and then pick them to weave together stories…since then I have collected words much the same as you describe, Tara. I subscribe to a word a day and one of the features I enjoy most is the earliest documented use note…so many fascinating and furiously funny things to gather and share…all those possibilities just waiting to be plucked out and devoured! Love this first of the storm gusts of wind!!

What a motivating way to kick off StoryStorm! I came up with a fun word (and story idea stemming from that word). I’m involved in another challenge to write for 24 minutes a day. And, even though StoryStorm doesn’t “require” that we write stories that go with our ideas, I may go ahead and get started–while the idea is fresh. Thanks for another year of StoryStorm, Tara!

Thanks so much, Tara, for such a great kick off to Story Storm! I feel

down what strikes me so those words aren’t lost to time and space!

This is one of my family’s favorite books. And it’s not just for kids! Absurd Words has sparked many an impromptu discussion between both adults and kids in my world. I have both a digital and hard copy, it’s that essential to me. I even got my tattered copy of Absurd Words signed & addressed to my folks (huge fans!) while I was at the Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival and got to see Tara’s smiling face in person.
In the last 2 years, I’ve shared many a word from Absurd Words; the most used so far being ZARF. Try asking your Barista at the coffee shop for a Zarf for your cup. LOTS of fun. It’s that paper thingy that goes around the hot cup so you don’t burn your fingers. Originally, it was made of metal & wrapped around glass, courtesy of England. I only know that because of the fabulous sidebars that have “Did You Know?” info about a word, including history & slang. Makes the book, i.m.o. One Barista loved the word so much, she made it the word of the week on the “Guess the Word” sign. I left her the book name & author name, in case she or anyone else wanted more words.
My parents’ favorite part of the book is all the Yiddish words. They can talk for an hour with their friends about these words, and we have! I passed their request on to Tara for a dedicated Absurd Words: The Yiddish Edition. Even Tara’s M-I-L says this book isn’t just for kids & would also like more Yiddish words.
Two years ago, in January, during my early infatuation with Absurd Words, I felt a song coming on for it. A word love song. It was my first song for “STORYSTORM ’22: THE MUSICAL EDITION.
I invited Tara to be on the song, and she recorded a fantastic impersonation of Lily’s Tomlin’s Ernestine the (phone) Operator. I’ll try to post it on my Twitter feed if you want to hear it.
Well, I’ve used more than my usual allotment of words, so I will end with – Thank you Tara for your support, mentorship & kindness, which you shower on the Kidlit Community. We’ve grown to love your puns, & you’ve demonstrated what courage and persistence look like, in all parts of your life.
And get ready for “STORYSTORM ’24: The Musical Edition
fin 😉

Hi, Tara,
I seem to not be getting your blog anymore – is there a place to sign up again? Some of the blog sites send me TONS of other people’s blogs and I tried to unsubscribe from their suggestions, but I fear that I might have accidentally unsubscribed from yours!

Scratching scribbles on scrolls structuring stories sounds simply sensational. My mind is starting to stretch its strongly static state to one much more meaningful, its mind-blowing, magnificent even, that a man may make the mental adjust-ment in order to measure it’s marked results. All in the name of playing with words. Yeah!

The older I get, the harder a time I’m able to pull a word from the depths of my brain. I struggle with this daily. I love Tara’s idea about writing down words, and I’m going to buy her book. By the way, the first time I ran across the word “archipelago” it was on the map when my family and I visited Sweden. I was inthralled. (now I need to hone my spelling!)

I’m playing catch up here (day 6 today) due to family events. We book lovers are always coming across fun words to read or even say. My physics students and I made up a word to describe a person acting in ‘some typa way’ that they could playfully use to reel in a friend’s less than desirable behavior. Thanks for reminding me of this and spurring some new ideas!

I love how your idea for this book came from your love of words – especially the “absurd” ones. 🙂 I might have to start doing that myself. There are words I come across at times that fascinate me as well.

The love of “WORDS” is what drives my writing. I love the feel of a word as it rolls off my tongue or as it travels from my heart to my brain.

I especially love when I encounter a word that helps me connect it to another language. Like appellation is another word for “Name,” and obviously has the same source as the French, as in Je m’appelle Charles. 🙂

I truly love the way certain words roll off our tongues. I loved this entry as he beginning one for the month. It has us thinking out of the box from the start. I am also interested in the origin of certain words. The combo of the two can provide a story line in itself.

Hello from late January! This month is always bonkers busy for me at work, but it’s finally slowed down enough for me to start catching up on Storystorm. Only to discover I never registered. 🤦♀️ Whoops. Still, the learning and the idea mining is available to me, and for that I am grateful to all the writers contributing this month. And I guess I’m off the hook on any January 31 deadlines and can work my way through the posts at my leisure now.
Anyway, I feel this post big time. I have been trying for ages to find a story that celebrates my love of the word “shenanigans” and maybe this is the year. Or “malarkey.” Or “periwinkle.” Or maybe “bonkers,” which I used at the very start of this post and absolutely love.

I know I am too late to win any prizes, but after getting through a difficult bout of depression, I still wanted to be able to say I am a Storystorm 2024 participant.
Loved the book Tara, and my 5 year actually enjoy it a little bit as well. I am glad to hear you mention how pictures books can have 1 or 2 of these words as long as kids are able to decipher the meaning. It was something I felt discouraged to do, but now I might try to do it in every(or every other) story.
