Ten years ago, I skirted the shadows of Tara’s 2011 PiBoIdMo (now Storystorm) Challenge. I walked away with a notebook filled with 30 ideas and a thirst for more. Two months later, I hopped aboard the first year of Julie Hedlund’s 12×12 Picture Book Challenge and wrote 12 picture book manuscripts. I got in the habit of gathering ideas from wherever they came and turning them into picture book stories. And that habit came in handy in the fall of 2017. I sold a manuscript to Ann Rider at HMH and she didn’t want just that manuscript—she wanted NINE! She wanted to create a compilation book about inventions that changed the way the world moves. My deadline was May 1, 2018—which gave me nine months to hand in nine submission-ready narrative nonfiction picture book biographies.

The idea for the first story actually came from my sister who had told me about a friend of a friend who was the granddaughter of the founder of the Greyhound Bus Company. It sounded like a fascinating story—my curiosity was piqued—and I dug deep into finding out more. After writing the rough draft and many rounds of revision and critique group feedback, my agent submitted it and we got interest from Ann. But the editor wasn’t sure if Eric and the bus were strong enough/popular enough to be a stand-alone picture book. Ann had an idea…would I be willing to write several more stories, similar in structure and tone, about the invention or creation of other things that move?
My answer, of course, was YES!
The editor wanted all the stories to include:
I got down to business. First, I made a list of vehicles, like the car and the train. I already had a manuscript about the invention of the hot-air balloon—maybe I could tweak it to fit this collection. But Ann also wanted me to think outside the box of things that move. Maybe a robot, she suggested. And I wondered, who invented the first robot? Early on, robots were part of science fiction—in the writings of H.G. Wells and Isaac Asimov. I dug deeper. I discovered the story of a young boy of fifteen who rebuilt the transmission of his family’s car—without an instruction manual. When he graduated from high school, he designed the first automatic doors. He engineered the first photoelectric entrance counters which were demonstrated at the 1939 World’s Fair. And he built the first robotic, a mechanical arm used at a General Motors factory in 1961 to weld car parts. His name? George Devol, the Father of Robotics. But I’d never heard of him and perhaps most of you haven’t either. I guess that’s another reason I write these narrative nonfiction biographies—I’m passionate about sharing the lives of these ordinary people who have done extraordinary things. I’m hoping to spark the curiosity of young readers to inspire them to create their own magic.
Another out-of-the-box moving invention was the folding wheelchair that opened doors, both literally and figuratively, for mobility challenged individuals. More digging revealed that this inventor had been a high hurdler in college. But after becoming a mining engineer, Herbert Everest broke his back in a mining accident. Paralyzed, but unwilling to forego his beloved road trips, Herbert and a mechanical engineering buddy, Harry Jennings, brainstormed until they came up with a wheelchair design that would allow the chair to fit in a car. Although there was a lot of information about their wheelchair company, there was almost nothing about Herbert’s early life. Where could I find that information? I consulted the census, I studied the online documents from the Colorado School of Mines where Herbert attended college, and I reached out to the special collections’ librarian at the downtown library in Oklahoma City where Herbert lived for many years. Lisa Bray was unbelievably helpful and I learned enough so that I could craft a credible story of Herbert’s early years.
The last chapter in this compilation book is one of my favorites. I know I wanted at least one water vehicle. But who invented the first boat? Canoes and kayaks have been around since before 8000 BCE. There was no way I would be able to pin down an AH-HA moment or delve into the childhood of those visionaries. So again, I tried to think outside the box. I googled ‘firsts in shipbuilding’ and I was lucky. Up popped the name of Raye Montague, who led the team of naval engineers in 1970 to create the first computer-generated ship design. More luck came my way when I uncovered several taped interviews she had given and I was able to hear her story, from childhood on, in her own voice.
My journey with FROM HERE TO THERE: Inventions That Changed the Way the World Moves, illustrated by the brilliant Gilbert Ford, has definitely been a labor of love—nine months, nine stories—and I think the journey is just beginning. But I’d like to leave you with a quote from Lisa Bray, that amazing Oklahoma City librarian, because it speaks to what the Storystorm Challenge is all about, and to what we, as writers, need to keep close to our hearts as we step into 2021 and craft stories that will engage young readers:
”There are interesting stories everywhere you look, and one doesn’t have to be famous to have a good story to tell.”

Writer for children—reader forever…that’s Vivian Kirkfield in five words. Her bucket list contains many more words—but she’s already checked off skydiving, parasailing, and visiting kidlit friends all around the world. When she isn’t looking for ways to fall from the sky or sink under the water, she can be found writing picture books in the picturesque town of Bedford, New Hampshire. A retired kindergarten teacher with a masters in Early Childhood Education, Vivian inspires budding writers during classroom visits and shares insights with aspiring authors at conferences and on her blog where she hosts the #50PreciousWords International Writing Contest and the #50PreciousWordsforKids Challenge. Her nonfiction narratives bring history alive for young readers and her picture books have garnered starred reviews and accolades including the Silver Eureka, Social Studies Notable Trade Book, and Junior Library Guild Selection.

I really enjoyed reading this story about how important it is to keep generating ideas. The wonderful thing about picture books is the fact that they have to be brief: it sharpens your critical senses, making you aware of how vital each word is, and how easy it is to put in unnecessary words. But it’s also equally important to make the story work right from the very first page, as your audience doesn’t have the patience or the experience to forgive you for meandering off the point. And your first idea may not resonate with any of the publishers or agents you send it to, so rather than allow that failure to put you off the whole process, it’s essential to continue writing and submitting, until the right story hits the right desk. Bravo Vivian!

Time to develop a habit of writing your ideas down in a systematic way. Roll along a path of creativity, one step at a time, and picking up nuggets of wisdom along the way. I realized after the second day, that each day is a tiny lesson in the writing process, of where to go, how to see, and how to delve into your own experiences. (newbie perspective)
By brontebrown2 on January 2, 2021 at 10:57 am
Vivian, thank you for sharing not only the “what,” but also, the “how.” We often hear the term “dig deep” without much explanation, but you demonstrated it by showing how you skimmed off the ideas and pursued the research that gave you the stories for your book. ❤

I’m exploring this genre more as I recently completed the first of three Creative Nonfiction workshop courses as a part of my double creative writing concentration at SNHU. I loved the process of brainstorming, researching, and revising. It surprised me how much I enjoyed having evidence to support the creative structure. I look forward to reading Vivian’s work. I loved hearing you tell about your writing journey. Your style of writing is so inviting that the reader is ready to jump aboard and follow you to whatever you’re doing and wherever you’re going. How great to share your editor’s thoughts and advice, something we prepublished authors often never hear. I love your choice of subjects, each bring an eye-opening story to light. It’s difficult to pick a favorite story in FROM HERE TO THERE, but the story about “Herbert and Harry Find a Way” is so important for many active people who suddenly find themselves without the ability to move on their own. Thank you, Vivian Kirkfield, for contributing wonderful stories to engage readers and to help writers improve their craft.

Lovely article, Vivian! Thanks for sharing your creative thought process! I’ve been toying with the idea of writing a narrative no fiction bio about a local artist that recently passed away, but wasn’t sure if he was “famous enough” for people to be interested. Journalists used to say “everyone has a story” — it was the job of a good journalist to find and tell that story. I think what you’re doing in digging up stories about sometimes-unheard of people is really important.

I had no idea how Vivian started. So interesting.
By nicolesalterbraun on January 2, 2021 at 7:19 pm
My real start came a few months before Tara’s challenge in November 2011…my son gave me a very unusual gift for my 64th birthday…he took me skydiving. And the best part of that was when my feet touched the ground, I know that if I could do that, I could do anything. And then Julie announced she was going to have a challenge called 12×12 – to write 12 pb manuscripts in 12 months…and I was totally ready to take a leap of faith and I jumped into that with my whole heart, Nicole. 🙂
By viviankirkfield on January 2, 2021 at 9:33 pm
Thanks for such a detailed post, Vivian. Nine months, nine stories. Wow!

It often comes back to what you know and where your passion is. It doesn’t mean you have to be an expert, but your background and fascination lay the groundwork for many stories. When you look at the world from there, you can find so many fascinating things to write about.
By matthewlasley on January 2, 2021 at 7:47 pm
Yes, Matthew, that’s it exactly…if the topic fascinates you…if you are passionate to bring that story to life…those are key ingredients in helping you when the going gets tough. 🙂

By Tasha Hilderman on January 2, 2021 at 8:51 pm
I actually asked the illustrator to create jpegs for me of ALL of the first page spreads from each chapter – exactly for that reason, Tasha. I’m such a fan of strong opening lines – they are the doorway into the book for the reader…glad it will be helpful. And the book itself is kind of like a mentor text for anyone who wants to be writing nfpb bios…nine stories for the price of one…what a bargain, right? 🙂

Thank you for letting us in on this journey! I’ve often wondered, with bios, do you need to get in touch with the next of kin to feature the story (of someone who has passed away)?
By dazzlengsy on January 2, 2021 at 11:31 pm
That’s a great question, dazzlengsy (sorry I can’t address you by name…your email handle doesn’t provide any clues). I don’t think you do…it just happened that I had a connection with a relative of Eric Wickman through a mutual friend of my sister’s…and I did reach out to Raye Montague’s son because she was still alive when I first wrote the story (sadly, she passed away in 2018). I think we can write a story about anyone without getting permission…but editors might want to know that you have the blessing of the person if they are still alive and they aren’t a public figure. Writing a story about a living public figures, like a celebrity, usually doesn’t require any permissions. And if your subject has been dead a long time, even if they aren’t a public figure, you are probably good to go without permission.
By viviankirkfield on January 3, 2021 at 1:06 am
Hi Vivian (my name is Dazzle)! I really appreciate your reply. I’ve always seen this as a barrier (i.e. having to know someone famous to get their permission or dealing with estates); so in true Storystorm fashion, this opens up a lot of possibilities. Thank you. (But don’t worry, I will still write with caution. Also, I’m sorry to hear that Raye Montague didn’t get to hold the book in her hands. That would have been quite the moment.)
The quote from Lisa Bray is now even more meaningful. Thank you for making PB bios much less intimidating!
By dazzlengsy on January 3, 2021 at 5:15 am
Wow I love how one idea turned into nine stories and how you used challenges to hone your writing.

What is also very inspiring is how you said YES to the editor’s suggestion. The mere thought of having 9 stories ready in 9 months while being pre-published can feel overwhelming, but not for someone born to inspire!

Amazing work Vivian! I would love to ask you a question: Did you ever come across someone who tried to invent something but it didn’t work out? I have a subject that worked hard on an invention and even though he did succeed, I’d still like to tell his story because he deserves recognition….
By Deborah Foster on January 3, 2021 at 11:43 am
*he didn’t succeed*
By Deborah Foster on January 3, 2021 at 11:44 am
That’s such a good question, Deborah…because in actuality, most of the inventions that do succeed are standing on the shoulders of inventors who came before and took the first steps, even though their experiments didn’t ‘succeed’. Is there a successful invention that can be traced to your inventor’s early attempts? If so, that might be a way into the story…begin with the successful invention as your opening…and then ask: but who first came up with this idea – or something like that. Because if it is a story for kids, we want to make it a hopeful one, right? And this would also show how important collaboration is (even if it isn’t actual working together but just using the ideas and/or previous research of others).

So interesting to read about your writing process for this book. I am a kindergarten teacher and this story you have created fits well with my class’s IB unit on Where We Are in Place and Time. This kinder unit focuses on how things have changed in our world in regards to technology and transportation to meet our community’s needs. This book is a great example of how things change and get modified to serve a purpose. I am looking forward to reading this book to my kids during that unit.

This books sounds excellent, Vivian. I can’t wait to see it in print!
My big takeaway from your post is how helpful some parameters or other guidance can be for idea generation. Having those notes from your editor– kid protagonists, a-ha moments, a legacy of the invention, etc.– would have really helped me to focus my research. I’ve found that limits, maybe paradoxically, can help increase my creativity.

A full manuscript, well-researched, edited, and maintaining the voice and pacing, syntax, and formatting of the previous manuscripts – each month? Wow! You had me taking notes throughout, not only on your process, but on the idea I’ve been holding lightly for a few days. Here we go! Thank you so much!

I am in my 4th year of teaching first grade and I taught kindergarten 16 years prior to that. I have said for years I would like to create nonfiction picture books that support the PA standards that are lower level for them to be able to read independently on various topics like careers, animals, plants, famous people, landmarks, holidays from around the world, etc. I would love to just chat. I think your education background would be so helpful.

What an amazing journey and writing story. I was particularly amazed but how Vivian thought outside the box to find information about Herbert’s early years. I am currently struggling to write a biography about Dominican Heroes and there is little information about their lives and even less information about their early years. A call to brainstorm potential sources would be invaluable.

I’m grateful to read of an accomplished author such as yourself writing from prompts like the ones given to you for this project, as my two published books I wrote from a publisher-created title and theme, and struggled for a few years with a fair amount of imposter syndrome. Writing comes in all shapes and sizes and paths, and it’s evident just how much intricate thought and care you put into this specific book and telling the stories of these amazing inventors. Thank you for sharing the process with us all! 🙂

As a childhood (and current) lover of encyclopedias and short stories, I have an affection for compilation books of this type that blend the informative stimulation of nonfiction with the cracking yarn style of a well-told tale. Hard to say what idea of mine would work in this particular format though—they’re all pretty niche. (Special effects creators, anyone?)

Could someone email me Day 1 please. It has gone missing while we were without our internet for a week which included Days 1- 6. I have 2-6 but 1 was missing. For some reason someone disconnected us from our internet for a week. It took us almost the whole week to find out who could get it back for us. I guess it was a stupid mistake on someone’s part but now too pleasant for us. I’m dealing with masses of emails and tons of spam. What a nightmare! It’s good I have a lot of time at home.😏😷 Thanks!

Thank you Vivian. I have not yet attempted any narrative nonfiction bios, but I do have someone I want to write about. Your research method, to google ‘firsts’ is such a wonderful idea, and something I might try. Thanks for sharing your journey with writing this compilation!

Thank you Vivian for sharing these awesome stories! I love how you describe your writer detective work to track down the stories in your book. I am inspired to learn more about the back stories of inventions all around me now! I also need your book to read with my boys. What a wonderful post!

Hi Vivian – As a relatively new PB writer, I started out with 12×12, too. I feel like the practice of being prolific is really helpful and your journey really underscores that. Thanks for sharing!

Vivian, I love how you said YES and found a way to push yourself to generate enough ideas to fill this book. What a great example of putting your idea brain to use! Best of luck with your new book. It’s so beautiful!

Vivian, I love the idea of a compilation of biographies tied together by topic and structure. Can’t wait to read about these “ordinary” people who achieved “extraordinary” accomplishments.
By ptnozell on January 14, 2021 at 11:56 am
Vivian, I love how you looked for stories and people who were not mainstream inventors. By looking outside that field, you brought people with imaginations who invented things based on a need that had touched them. You chose with your heart and thus, brought heart to your book. Thank you for sharing this heartfelt journey with us.

Amazing to see what thoughts get churned up by making a compiliation list. Mine started with eating and ended with falconry. Weird.
Thank you for the bullet point list from your editor. Looks like a good checklist for every picture book.

I really liked the 6 key factors your editor asked you to include, as those would elevate any picture book, fiction or the Narrative non-fiction Biographies you write, and how you wanted to elevate your passion for sharing the lives of extraordinary people. The #50 PreciousWords challenges are also such a cool idea. Thank you for sharing your insight, Vivian!
