by Zachariah OHora (from 2013)
Writing is hard work. Coming up with good characters can be even harder. The market for picture books (at least this moment) is all about character-driven stories.
When I’m trying to come up with a fresh book idea and there isn’t one to steal from my kids, I start with a character.
I’ve developed a method that is very simple. Even if you don’t draw you can fake it.
It’s called “Pump Your Character” ™.
In a nutshell it works like this…
(Tara’s note: click each image to see it in its full-sized glory!)

Good! You are on your way. If you are feeling confident about this simple version, move on to the advanced version.

Say you are having trouble picking an animal. Maybe you hate animals? If so, try writing dystopian YA.
If you love animals but just can’t decide go to CuteOverload.com or even better FYeahCuteAnimalss.tumblr.com.
Pick an animal and refer to the charts above to “Pump Your Character” ™.
If done right your character will write or reveal it’s own story. All you have to do is be open to hearing it. Don’t be afraid to use peoples own prejudices and expectations.
You might be surprised. Here’s an example.

Sometimes I get lucky. Real life provides me with a story and character idea and they almost write themselves. NO FITS NILSON! was one of those.

Good luck Pumping Your Character!

“No Fits Nilson” actually reminded me of David Elliott’s “Finn Throws a Fit,” which he also modeled after a real-life boy, the son of our neighbors. Some good ideas here, thank you!

While I like the concept of changing up a character–the word “pimp”—has a disturbing history, definition and connotation and is not a word I’d associate with levity, much less kid-lit! I think I’ll use the word tweaking my character or diversifying my character. I like that better because you have a cool concept–which I’d like to explore–thanks for that!

I am writing a character-driven story right now so these visuals are so helpful even to a non-illustrator like me. I can see how adding these accessories and quirks helps to fully develop the character into a unique, fresh version of a regular animal. I LOVE your books Zachariah and your hip PB vibes.

Laughing so hard! LOVE Wolfie the Bunny, and all following… especially loving the reveal on NO FITS NILSON! Reminding me of son issues… triggering thoughts about popcorn saving the day.
I often find drawing the character out or a mid-story or inciting incident type scene has sparked a story for me. But your “pimping” style has me having an a-ha moment… to get more into the quirks of a character before knowing what will happen… could not only grow my story ideas, but expand my art style sooner for what’s to come. Thank you for being so open about your process…. and funny!

Pimp your character….. a Home Economics teacher of prissy, pimply, rich girls. She wears orange and black striped jogging clothes, including athletic shoes with an unusual tread. She carries a large suitcase with multiple scratches – like claw marks on it, and trails small blue and green feathers from the case. Her large, black-rimmed glasses have both lens cracked. She uses a hand magnifying glass to see the students, her desk and the board. But when she dons a sealskin apron, and goes to the stove, her eyes – black as coal – glitter with keen vision. Her favorite menus to teach are meats, fowl and fish. The students either fear her eccentric methods and ingredients, or begin drooling before the class even begins.

Great post, Zachariah!! Thank you for giving us a peek at your character ideas for No Fits Nilson! I’m not an artist but am an avid doodler. Instead I found eLouai’s Doll Maker and have designed 30 characters so far. I’ve done characters for my chapter books (Anya, as well as Footprints in the Snow) and for my middle grade novel (The Misadventures of Ned) and have others in the works. It’s like being a kid again and playing with paper dolls.

I have never had a problem with character development. I think it’s because I am still in child mode. Thanks for a wonderful post.

OMG how I love this. I feel like I just had an epiphany with your “Pimp your character” guide. You know the prompt of “If you could have lunch with any 3 people…” ? Well, Mr. OHora, you’ve been invited to join me, Jesus, and someone else for lunch. LOL THANK YOU!!

Stick figure pimping – it’s just not the same. I have to write a synopsis of what it should look like because 1 year from now I’ll probably not be able to recognize my drawing.

This is so fun and so random! But I love how you create the character and then are silent and let the character tell you its story!
Thank you!
