To know me is to know that I love dogs. LOVE them! In fact, all of my fiction picture books currently under contract contain dogs as main characters (and I have several WIPs with dog characters too ☺).
So, to celebrate the release of HELLO GOODBYE DOG, it’s time to say “hello” to some of my favorite dogs, both real and literary:
It all begins with … Becca, the best dog in the universe. She’s a rescue dog from Chattanooga, Tennessee, and she’s the inspiration for many, most, OK ALL of the dog characters in my books. We adopted her when she was six months old. This photo taken by her rescuers, stole my heart.
Now she’s 11 ½, and the perfect writing companion.
Before Becca, there was quirky Elvis, our junk-yard dog, literally adopted from an auto-body shop:
And this is Mac, short for MacTavish, my parents’ dog (more accurately, my brother Michael’s dog):
Apparently, I was infatuated with dogs, even as a young baby. This was my Nonno’s beagle, Socco, and some random pup I was playing with:
Now it’s time to say “hello” to some of my favorite literary dogs…
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate: Bob. LOVE his voice—he’s hilarious!
The Penderwick “tails” by Jeanne Birdsall:
Loyal and loving, Hound.
Kate DiCamillo’s Winn Dixie from the eponymous, Because of Winn Dixie, because whose dog doesn’t smile? In our household, we call it the “happy Hund” syndrome. (Hund is German for dog).
The Higher Power of Lucky by Susan Patron:
Tried and true, HMS Beagle.
Wish by Barbara O’Connor
Sweet stray, Wishbone.
Scott O’Dell’s Island of the Blue Dolphins:
Rontu/Rontu-Aru—I so wanted to live on an island with my dog, BFF, an introvert’s dream-come-true!
Dismay from the heartbreakingly lovely Each Little Bird That Sings by Deborah Wiles.
A few other favorites:
Ragweed
Gaston
Daisy
Of course, this doggone good post would not be complete without …
Thyra Heder’s adorable, Jelly:
The Great Houndini, by Danny Chatzikonstantinou:
And last, but not least, Moose, lovingly rendered by Patrice Barton!
And, you guessed it! There’s a new dog in my next fiction book, Operation Rescue Dog, coming from Little Bee in 2018: Lulu! It will be illustrated by Luisa Uribe. Here are two dogs from her book, Un Día, to give you an idea of her style:
Now it’s your turn to say “hello.” Who are your favorite literary dogs?
Leave a comment below, and you’ll be in the running for your very own copy of HELLO GOODBYE DOG! I’m sure that you’ll love Patrice Barton’s illustrations just as much as I do!
Thanks for letting me gush about all these pawsome dogs, Tara!!

Your timing was perfect as I just lost my little heart breaker rescue dog. Now I’m off to the library to enjoy the books in your post. My little Patches won’t be forgotten because I’ll put her in my next story and the one after that and so on. Loved your post!

Fun to see real and literary dogs, old & new. I put off reading Because of Winn-Dixie because we all know how dog books end, right? So glad I finally read it and was proven wrong. My favorite literary dog? Beverly Cleary’s Ribsy. 🙂 Looking forward to Hello Goodbye Dog!!

Some of my favorite literary dogs include the hilarious dog from The Bear Ate Your Sandwich, the puppy Ollie from Little Puppy Lost, and the sweeties from Excellent Ed, I Got a New Friend, and There Might Be Lobsters.

My favorite literary dog has to be Marley from Marley and Me. My own rescue dog has been the most challenging (and most loving) dog I’ve ever owned. Like Marley, he has gotten into more than his fair share of trouble, but I can’t imagine my life without him.

My sister is reading aloud to me from a favorite book from her childhood (we are 58 & 67 yro)–Little Dog by Ethelind Fearon, illustrated by Howard Simon. Published in 1955 by Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Col, New York. Love this utterly British, very well-written description of post WWII British farm life. Can’t believe I never read this as a kid, since it’s been on the shelves of our summer house the whole time.
August 7, 2017 at 3:31 pm
mariagianferrari
I’ll have to check that out, Sallie–thanks for the rec! And you have the perfect canine surname!! 😉

Thanks, Maria and Tara. Dogs make awesome book characters. They make such wonderful best friends! What about Nana in Peter Pan? She doesn’t play a huge part but I remember wishing I had a canine babysitter!

Oh, I want a dog!!! We are living in a place where we are unable to have one…for now. We’ve always loved collies – Jody and Jessie were two of ours. And Maggie, our border collie. So I would have to say Lassie is one of my favorite literary dogs. 🙂
August 7, 2017 at 3:35 pm
mariagianferrari
Lassie is a classic!! I’m sorry that you can’t have a dog where you live, Angie :(. You could volunteer at a shelter, or find a local reading dog program in your area and visit with them 🙂

Oh, I’m in LOVE with this post, this book, and the doggy’s pictured! I’m a fan of our canine companions too. My fur babies provide so much unconditional love, happiness, and more that I don’t know what I’d do without it. As far as literary dogs, my mind is racing right now because there are SO MANY! I’ll add my latest faves to the list from NEW YORK, ACTUALLY by Sarah Morgan…. Valentine and Brutus (aka Ruffles… don’t ask, you have to read it 😂). Valentine is a sweet as can be Dalmatian with a heart shaped nose and companion to Molly, who also happens to be a writer of sorts. Brutus is a rescue dog that was used twice, once as leverage and once to get the girl, but I’m pretty sure he’s gonna have a forever home in this latest “foster”… you can just tell they were made for each other. 😊
August 7, 2017 at 3:37 pm

I don’t know that one, grgenius–I’ll look for it! What are your dogs’ names? Dog love is the best!!

Love your latest book! So many great dogs starring on pages so I’ll mention A Day in the Life of Murphy by the wonderful Alice Provensen and Maggie’s Second Chance: A Gentle Dog’s rescue (based on my rescued lab and brought to life by artist Joe Hyatt)…plus oodles more on my sagging bookshelves:-)

I can see why you love the Carl, books! I love big dogs, and rotties and especially pitbulls nowadays get such a bad rap! And I adore Ivan! It’s really one of my very favorite books! So funny, so poignant, so perfect! thanks, Angela!

When I was a child my favorite dog book character was Harry (from Harry the Dirty Dog). When I become a mother, Clifford was all the rage so I have lots of fun reading that series to my daughter as well as the Carl series. We had a dog that looked just like Carl.
Now, as a PB writer, I like:
Sid (from Some Dogs Do by Jez Alborough
Tuesday (from Tuesday Tucks Me In: The Loyal Bond between a Soldier and his Service Dog by Luis Carlos Montalván)
Homer (from Wolf Camp by Andrea Zuill)
and George (from Oh No, George!, by Chris Haughton)
My favorite (adult) book of all times is The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein (which, contrary to the title, has much to do with a special dog.)
and, of course, I love Maria’s books. I buy them for my niece’s daughter. Little Mila is proud of her collection.

My newest favorite dog is the little guy from Spare Dog Parts by Alison Hughes. He reminds me of the screwball, knucklehead mess that is Cupcake, my rescue-turned-therapy-dog. She’s all mismatched, poorly aligned, and equipped with crazy-legs. Plus she has the biggest heart in the universe. Yup.
August 8, 2017 at 9:45 am

I love your cupcake, Genevieve! I’ll have to find that one–hadn’t heard of it! Thanks for the rec!

I’m gratified to see all the affection for Harry the Dirty Dog. Clarence the TV Dog, a chapter book by Patricia Lauber, was one of my childhood favorites, even in the age of color television. As for adult books, how about Cyril in To Say Nothing of the Dog (Connie Willis)?
August 8, 2017 at 9:45 am

I only know of & love Harry, Janet. I’ll have to look up the others. Thanks for commenting!

Lisa Rogers
Dogs–amazing companions and unbelievable inspiration. Growing up, I read my Lassie book over and over, then desperately wanted a beagle because of Snoopy. Besides the incredible dog stories mentioned above, I’d like to add Trouper by Meg Kearney. Her beautiful words and E.B. Lewis’ watercolors combine to melt my heart every time I read it. And it’s based on a real rescue dog.
The wonderful thing about dogs–and dog books–is that there’s always room in the heart for one more!
August 8, 2017 at 9:47 am

I really enjoyed Trooper!! As a kid visiting relatives in Italy, I saw many very happy three-legged dogs. There’s tons of room in my ❤ too–the more, the better! Thanks, Lisa!!

It’s always fun to learn the “story behind the story”. Thanks for this great doggie trail tale! Hello Goodbye Dog looks adorable!

Yayyy for dogs!! My studio would not function without one in it. We lost one this year (still have one spunky old “pup”), and I keep telling everyone a new puppy would be great inspiration for me! Looks like a beautiful book, can’t wait to hold it!
