IT is almost here! *SQUEE!*
And since you are reading this post… you probably already know what IT is!
IT just happens to be the most fabulicious, wondermous, funkaperfect challenge this side of Gallifrey!
IT is…
Picture Book Idea Month! (aka PiBoIdMo)
Thirty ideas in thirty days wrapped in unlimited potential!
And did I mention there are prizes, too?
So why, oh why, am I stuffing myself full of gluten and chocolate?
BECAUSE….
Right now, all I have is:
- A blank PiBoIdMo notebook.
- Two twitching eyes.
- And a bewildered expression as I stare at the aforementioned blank notebook with my two twitching eyes.
I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place!
I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about my action plan for PiBoIdMo. And though some of my thinking has been helpful… much of it has been less than positive. Here’s a preview of my sordid thoughts:
How in the world will I come up with 30 different picture book ideas in 30 days and still manage to maintain any reasonable semblance of sanity? AAAHHHH!
How will I get all my homeschool stuffs done?
And what about my endless mound of dirty clothes?
Then there’s that whole clothing and feeding the munchkins gig.
And I definitely, positively have to diffuse the Dustbunny uprising happening in my living room.
But the question I should be asking is this:
How am I going to get rid of this stinky thinkin’ and get back to creative thinkin’??
Well…
Pooh Bear had his Thinking Spot.
Henry David Thoreau had Walden Pond.
Doctor Who has the TARDIS.
And I…
I have the shower.
That’s right folks. The shower is where I often go for:
- Refuge,
- A moment of clarity,
- And ideas!
It’s the one place no one follows me—especially if I’ve missed a shower the day before. (Don’t judge me. I have three kids… it happens.)
Matter of fact, the shower is where the idea for BEING FRANK was born! (Seriously. It was!)
So instead of staring at an empty page with twitching eyes and a blank expression throughout the month of November, I’m gonna do this:
- Jump in the shower.
- Ignore the soap scum crawling up the walls.
- Add water and suds…scrub.
- Pray. Think. Pray. Think.
- Then try and wrangle the new ideas as they slide across my brain.
- Rinse and repeat—until all the stink is gone (inside and out).
- Then, I will hurry to my notebook to jot down the latest idea.
- And by the end of the month, I will have 30 ideas.
Some of the ideas might be the definition of brilliant…
and some might make me yell, “Why in the world did I think that would work?”
But I WILL STILL HAVE 30 NEW IDEAS!!
Yeah, baby! I like this plan!
Visiting my “thinking spot” for 30 days in a row will afford me the chance to do more thinkin’… and less stinkin’. I want my thinkin’ to smell more like a mountainside full of flowers and less like fertilizer.
So is your stinky thinkin’ clouding your vision for PiBoIdMo? What’s your plan for getting rid of it? Whatever it is, get busy! You have 30 ideas waiting to bloom and break down those walls!
“The violets in the mountains have broken the rocks.” ~Tennessee Williams
When Donna isn’t homeschooling or battling the laundry, she’s writing children’s stories, poetry, songs, an mysteries. You might find her fishing the Pee Dee River, hiking in the mountains with her family, or visiting her hometown of Cordova, NC. She lives in Concord, NC, and BEING FRANK is her first picture book. You can find BEING FRANK in B&N, on Amazon, Books-a-million and in most independent bookstores. For more information and reviews, check out Flashlight Press’s website.

Yay showers! And just about any water experience. Well, maybe not that glass of ice water thrown at me by my daughter… Wait! Is there a picture book in that?

Running is where/when I think best. I’m going to be awfully tired or incredibly thin once this month is over!

Yeah I get a lot of ideas in the shower too. I heard a tip for writing in the shower (think it was from the Making Comics podcast), keep a grease pencil handy to write those ideas on the door. Haven’t tried it yet, not sure how it would clean up : ).

I’m a comedian and was only saying this to someone at a gig last night. I come up with really funny ideas in the shower but by the time I run, dripping with soap, trying not to slide over and expose all to the neighbours, (because of course they must be standing at their windows waiting for this.. not) my brain decides to go on vacation. Nothing. It’s all a bit tumbleweed in there.. So really I’m a great comedian in the shower – my bathrooms not really big enough for all the tables and chairs needed to do a gig there. (and I think people may well be a bit distracted with all of my “curves” – well, actually they seem to have a slow puncture going on now so… Anyway – yes! Shower great – is what I meant to say. 😀 Great post by the way.

Oh how I’ve missed all the fun daily posts on writing and being NORMAL (as in, I share the sentiments being posted- not that any of us are NORMAL 🙂 This makes my heart so happy! As does this post! YAY! Thanks! I suddenly have an urge to go take a shower….

Donna and Tara,
I’m very excited about this upcoming annual program and contest. Last year, a friend posted the logo and my name for me on her blog. NOT this year. I have my own going now. Yay! I’ll be able to proudly display the PiBoIdMo logo myself. Yay! I’m also excited to see Donna as a guest blogger and featured as a debut picture book author. She’s fantastic and so is her book. Go Donna!
Some companies sell products for writing in the shower. Anybody tried one?

Hooray for showers and hooray for BEING FRANK! It’s a fabulous book with a good message told in a funny, kid-relatable way. You had my kids laughing, that’s for sure!

Showers sound like a good idea. I like taking walks, too, but it is supposed to be cold this week. Oh well. I’ll just bundle up and get out there. Being Frank sounds like a good PB and funny.

Ahhhhhh, the shower! The place where all of my really (dare I say great?) ideas are born too!
TIP: Buy the kids crayons for the bathtub, they sell them at baby and toy stores, to write your ideas on the walls. No forgetting, running, slipping and it washes off easy peezy.
Thanks for a great article!!!!!! 🙂

My shower is a horrid stress box filled with thoughts of, “Is that black mold or mildew? I’m clean but I may die soon!” LOL, I’m jealous. Thanks for a great post!

Fun article, Donna! My best ideas come while driving (which works only when a kid in the back seat is old enough to scribble on a scrap of grocery receipt and decipher the words I’m shrieking.)

Oh, Donna, thank you for the Friday morning laugh! With a 3yo and an (almost) 1 yo, I can completely relate! The shower is one of the few places in the house I can hide (as long as I remember to lock the bathroom door, too).

😀 Sadly, I am even followed into the shower, and I only have 2 kids! Thanks for the inspiration. I will have to search for my own creative place. Perhaps in the coat closet under an old faux fur surrounded by inspirational dust bunnies?

I was going to give up showers for NaPi, but I like your idea much better. You know where else good ideas come? In the pedicure chair. Also, on the massage table. (I think November may be shaping up nicely)

Oh! Oh! I have a gift certificate for a massage- I will save it for November!

So true. I have two kids, and it’s hard to find a haven until after they go to bed. And then that;s when my husband wants my time. Oy! Seems like lunch break at work is my only true time for getting a good chunk of brainstorming done for myself (or writing a blog entry, or writing for Nanowrimo).

This is great. I do some of my best thinking in the shower. Except this means I’ll have to shower daily, and well, as a mother of two and a busy writer, that’s next to impossible! LOL
October 26, 2012 at 8:38 am
Hannah Holt
LOL! Now if only I had time to shower every day. I’ll just have to think up extra ideas for the days inbetween. Wonderful post, Donna!

Surely this is a plug in disguise from the body wash and shampoo manufacturers.

My best ideas usually come to me in the middle of the night, when everyone else is sleeping (and I should be, too). I keep a notepad on my nightstand and I’m slowly learning how to decipher my sleep-writing 🙂

Apparently Einstein found the shower a great place for ideas, too. We’re in good company. And I LOVE the idea of kids’ bathtub crayons. Thanks, Elaine!

Brilliant, squeaky clean & funny. But, I think I might opt for the tub.

Hi, Tara! My campaign plan for November is to encourage my brain to work during my sleep time. In truth, I am often roused at night by a picture or character or pb problem, which I then jot down in a notebook on the night table. Sometimes the ideas are ludicrous, but often they’ll float and I can rescue them. Good luck to us all!

True, a shower is nice and relaxing, but my best ideas come while I’m working in the garden… there is something about getting my hands in that good garden dirt that frees up my mind

I love the idea of a thinking spot, Whether its the shower or a quiet spot in the yard, or in the studio, this is a great idea.

I’m like Beth, I don’t even get to shower in peace. Usually either A) I have Miss 3 in the shower with me or sitting outside the door talking to me. B) the same as A, plus bubs sitting in her bouncer because she hasn’t wanted to nap that day or C) bubs in the bouncer plus Miss 3 and Master 5 in the bathtub.
I sometimes get good thinking time when driving (as long as Miss 3 isn’t talking my ear off).
But I’ve found in doing NaPiBoWriWee the best way to get PB ideas with kids around is to take them outside (if the weather is nice enough) and sit there with a notepad while they play. More often than not, watching them sparks the best ideas.
P.S. Definitely not judging you on missing a day of showering every now and then, I know only too well!

I receive ideas walking around the lake behind my home. I don’t know if its the ducks, swans, egrets, herons, fish, turtles or the alligator for which I see warning signs but not yet the alligator. Maybe it’s the fresh Florida air, the smell of nature, the open sky, or glare off the lake. Whatever it is, walking around the lake is where my brain gets juiced up.

Way to go, Donna! Hilariously inspirational post.
I’m registering for the challenge, too. Tried last year, but didn’t quite make 30 ideas. I’m trying again, though.

And Hey Jean-Jean! We’ll help keep each other on track!

First off, you homeschool? Me too!
Second, the shower idea is great, IF there’s music blasting away to drown out the knocks on the door…hehe!
I usually think best before falling asleep. That is is, after I’ve thought about tomorrows menu, laid out lesson plans in my head, reminded myself to grade Johnny’s spellings test, mentally ticked off my to do list (that I didn’t accomplish) and jumped up to put the clothes in the dryer. Whew! Now it’s time to get some new ideas flowing…

I’m hoping to slim down this month, so I’d better dust off the treadmill and hope my ideas come to me on there. The dog walks are my back up plan. Fun post.

Donna, you are ever inspiring and hilarious! I love every bit of this. I’m embarrassed to say that my inspiration comes in the bathroom as well, but on the baser side, as I scrub toilets. I lighten it up with a little Beatles music and sometimes the results come in a flush, er flash!

Had to laugh at the Stinky Thinkin’ post, Donna, but for me, no shower means I’m on a (creative) roll–shhh! That’s our secret, ok?

Hi Donna! You’ll be scrubbed clean by the time PiBoIdMo is over! I usually get my ideas while running. But I like your shower idea better. I know. I’ll make it a bathtub time! Bubbles are always good for ideas.

Donna, couldn’t imagine what your post was about from the title! HA! Great post…love the shower idea, so if I can’t do my 5-am-double-expresso plan, I’ll have to resort to being really clean this coming month.
(Never really got any good ideas from grunge anyway.)

Normally my ideas come to me while I am sitting in my car and I end up turning them into a note on my iPhone, thank goodness for technology! The challenge becomes, sooo, I have this great idea how the heck do I turn it INTO a manuscript especially when having to tend to two kids… I think a few extra long showers and longer trips to the grocery store are in my future!

Now that PiBoIdMo is coming to an end, I’ve got my 30+ ideas. Now I just have to figure out how to turn them into stories. I’ve got lots more thinking to do. [Turning on the shower.]
