So, my fellow PiBoIdMo participants, by now you have a list of tantalizing picture book ideas practically bursting off the page (or screen if you keep them on a computer). What to do?
Here is a novel idea. How about if you select your favorite ideas and write some picture book drafts? Get some of those ideas out of your head so they can one day be out into the world.
It seems like it would be easy to write loads of PBs now that you have that list of ideas, but it isn’t—especially if you go it alone. I know because last year at this very time, I was looking at my list of ideas from the 2010 PiBoIdMo and realized I had only written one manuscript from that list in 2011. How could that be possible?
There were two things missing for me: motivation and accountability. The community (from PiBoIdMo) was there, but I feared we’d all disperse to the four winds after November. So I got this crazy idea to challenge myself to write one picture book draft a month for each month of the year in 2012 and decided to invite people to join me. Thus 12 x 12 in 2012 was born.
I had no idea then that 400+ picture book writers would come together in this common mission, nor that we would become the tight-knit community we are today. I expected to run it casually for one year and then move on.
But I can’t end 12 x 12 after one year.
Because 12 x 12 doesn’t belong to me—it’s for everyone who loves picture books, wants to write them, and needs a cheering section for both the good times and the bad times. It’s to give writers, who have burning questions in the middle of the day and need an answer RIGHT NOW, a place to turn and to learn. It’s become more than a writing challenge. It’s a global family of writers who have the pluck to write in what could be the most challenging genre on earth.
My friend and fellow 12 x 12’er Tim McCanna recently made this phenomenal video to promote the challenge. His opening lyrics are thus:
So you wanna be a picture book writer?
Then ya gotta write picture books. (Well, duh!)
And yer gonna need a bucket load o’ bright ideas
For titles, plots and hooks.
Thanks to Tara and PiBoIdMo, you’ve got your bucket load of bright ideas. Are you ready to try to write a draft every month in 2013? Registration won’t open until next week, but you can sign up for the 12 x 12 mailing list so you’ll be ready when it does. In 2013 there will be three participation levels to choose from, including one that will enable participants with completed, polished manuscripts to submit to an agent or editor each month.
So, did I write 12 picture book drafts this year? No, I didn’t, but I did write 6 so far and there are still 3 weeks left in December! I’m not very good at math, but already that’s 5 more than I wrote last year. Plus, I completed major revisions on existing manuscripts and even got a publishing contract for one of them. So I am very pleased with my results. If you read some of the testimonials from other participants, I think you’ll see that they’re happy with their results too.
I hope to welcome many of you who completed PiBoIdMo into 12 x 12 in 2013. We are a friendly bunch, and we’re all in this together!
Thanks again to Tara for being the inspiration, not just for PiBoIdMo, but also for 12 x 12. The picture book community continues to grow and thrive as a result of her generosity and hard work.
Julie is generously giving away a FREE “Little GOLDen Book Level” membership in 12×12 for 2013, which includes, among many other features and benefits, the chance to submit to an agent or editor each month and bypass the slush pile! A winner will be selected from those who have commented on this post *and* completed the challenge. The winner will be chosen next week. Good luck!

Heyya Julie! I love 12 x 12. I am excited about 2013. Yippee!!! I have almost 12 drafts finished. By the end of the month draft 12 will be completed. And it’s the best one yet. A real humdinger. 🙂 Thanks to the both of you for all your loving care to our blogging/writing community. Congrads on A Troop. I knew the first time I read it that it would be published.

Wow, I am just so thankful for all of this inspiration and opportunities for the motivation-my dreams of being a picture book author and illustrator are becoming closer to reality with PiBoIdMo and now 12×12! As an illustrator, I really need that kick in the butt to write. Because I want to do both! However, is there a challenge for creating picture book dummies as well?
December 5, 2012 at 10:11 am
Julie
Heather, The 12 x 12 challenge doesn’t have a dummy component specifically, but many of the illustrators in the group DO challenge themselves to complete a dummy as well as a draft.

Your 12 x 12 is a Godsend. I honestly couldn’t flesh out my ideas from last years PiBoIdMo without your encouragement and support. The accountability to all of you helped me. My February story hooked me an agent for possible representation. Crossing my fingers. So I am definitely in for another round of 12×12! Thanks for hosting, Julie!

Julie! The Little Golden Book Level is such a great idea! It keeps the focus on getting the work done. I’m already planning mini weekly deadlines in my head to not only get a ms done each month, but lay it out in a dummy, make each page work, do some fine tuning, and have it ready to send out. Now if you can only add some levels that offer maid and chef services, babysitting and carpooling services, laundry services — so we all can spend more time writing. LOL

Cathy C. Hall
I absolutely took my ideas from PiBoIdMo and turned them into manuscripts once a month, so the 12 by 12 in’12 was a great motivator for me. And as an added bonus, I found thinking about picture books (and reading all of Julie’s posts and Tara’s posts, too) helped me tremendously with the PB writing. I could tell that my PiBoIdMo ideas were better this year, and I can’t wait to turn those ideas into books!
December 5, 2012 at 7:49 pm
Julie
Cathy, It’s true that these challenges keep picture books and the writing of them in your consciousness. It’s easier to get the writing done when you stay in that mindset.

Thanks for kicking 12X12 in 12 off – having to “be accountable” sure lit a fire under my chair… Today I’m actually working on story #11 (yup – I missed last month – can you believe!). And that is 10 more than I wrote the year before…. and even if only 2 or 3 are worth sending out in the end it is definitely a way to get going.

The 12X12 in 12 has been a great for me. After the challenge I have some PB manuscripts that I think are pretty good. It has been fun to bring new manuscripts to my critique group every month. Thanks to Julie for organizing this.

I am one manuscript away from completing the 12×12 in 2012 challenge, and I cannot say enough good things about it. It has been so inspirational to be a part of this group who are thinking and talking, and most importantly WRITING picture books all year long. If you are thinking you might like to do it — DO IT! If you are thinking you’re not ready yet — DO IT! If you are wondering where you will find the time — DO IT! I promise, you won’t regret it.

Ditto! Like PiBoIdMo, 12×12 has been fabulous. My favorite part? Besides the super encouraging community, the brilliant inspirational posts, the valuable, practical advice, the ms you finally have on hand when your critique group gets together? The deadlines–12X12 really helps you do what you know you should, and can. You can!

WOW Carrie! Can I use this comment as a testimonial on my website? I am so touched by this heartfelt response!

As someone who has been a member of NaPiBoWriWee, PiBoIdMo and 12×12 in 12 I can attest to how much they have helped me not only come up with ideas, but also to put them into draft form.
My 12×12 in 12 total stands at 25 and I’d like to reach 30 by the end of December and thanks to PiBoIdMo I’m well on my way.
Count me in for 12×12 in 2013! I would love to win the free “Little GOLDen Book Level” membership

Julie…I’ve been existing in a state of bliss this past year…in large part due to you and 12×12! Three of the twelve picture book drafts that I’ve completed are poised for submission in the next couple of weeks! I’m part of an amazing online critique group that was formed by six 12×12’ers. The Rocky Mountain SCBWI Conference in Fall 2013 is already penciled in on my calendar…I WILL be there…and hopefully will get to connect in person with you. I’m only sorry I can’t join you for the awesome Writer’s Renaissance Retreat you put together that will take place in Florence, Italy in the spring!
You have much to be proud of, Julie…you’ve been an inspiration to all of us…and you’ve accomplished so much…what a stellar year this has been!
And 2013 will only be even better! I’m ready for 12×12 in 2013!
December 5, 2012 at 10:53 pm

Vivian, you’ve inspired ME with all you’ve accomplished this year. I wish you could come to Florence too, but there’s always 2014… 🙂

You know, Julie…I love what I am doing so much, it never occurs to me that I am inspiring others…so I am always surprised when people say that. But I’m glad that you feel that way…and we’ll see how the year unfolds. 🙂

Julie I am so, so, so thankful that you created 12×12. While I only did 5 drafts this year that is still 4 more than I did last year. I am already looking forward to writing more drafts next year and beating this year’s number. I can honestly say 2012 is when my picture book writing really started and I owe it all to PiBoIdMo 2011 and 12×12 in 2012. Thanks Julie and Tara!
December 5, 2012 at 10:53 pm

Darn straight 4 more than last year is a great showing! I’ve loved having you in the group, Darshana, and look forward to having you back!

Thank you, thank you, Julie and Tara. Ever since I joined both groups in 2011, my writing world has changed. I have learned so much and I am perpetually excited about writing. Looking forward to 12 x 12 2013.

Julie, I have loved the challenge & especially the comaraderie of 12×12 this past year. To date, I’m 11 for 11, with a December draft in progress. Several of these have been revised, although nothing submitted yet. Thanks to Tara & PiBoIdMo, I have plenty of ideas to keep me going through 2013. Count me in!
And thank you for all of your efforts to support the newbies (like me) & make this profession a community!

I have a file cabinet bursting with half-finished picture book manuscripts; drafts that–for some reason–came to a screeching halt before they were polished enough to submit. I’d really like the support and motivation a challenge like this would give me. PiBoIdMo was fun, so I think I’ll sign up for 12 X 12 as well. Keep the fun going!

There is nothing I wanted more for Christmas than to be signed up and ready to participate in 12x12in’13. After a blissful year of finding the support and encouragement of the 12x12in’12 community, and a stack of picturebook ms drafts – some completed, and almost all are gettin’ there – I can hardly imagine things could get better, but having just read what Julie has come up with for 2013 I believe wishes can come true! Yeehaw!

Great interview. You are a true visionary Julie, in so many wonderful ways. I had my ideas, but hoped to come up with drafts that I knew had potential. So it was nice to hear you didn’t make the 12. I loved the video on 12×12 — very creative. And, I look forward to your releast of “A Troop is a Group of Monkeys” app.

While I have been following the successes of folks who took up the PiBoldMO, I opted to do the NaNoWriMo instead. I did complete that challenge, but it left no room for extra thoughts toward PB ideas. I’m sure I can come up with at least 12 PB ideas in the next week before you start (probably many more than that). I do write mostly picture books and would love the challenge of a draft a month. Can I still sign up?
Thanks!
Marcia

Thanks @Rena! @Denise – We do not have a 12 x 12 police. It’s your challenge, so if you want to count one in December for January, it’s all up to you. 🙂

This was my first year of PiBoIdMo, and I have the 12 x 12 group to thank for spreading the word. I wish I could remember which of my writer friends let me know about 12 x 12 in 2012 because I would thank her or him. I am grateful that my community of writers and illustrators continues to grow as I make more friends and as our groups grow. 12 x 12 is a supportive group and a sharing group. We share resources, knowledge, encouragement, chuckles, and sometimes tears and prayers. Thank you Tara for PiBoIdMo and for inspiring Julie to start 12 x 12 in 2012. Thanks Julie for all your hard work this year. I look forward to 12 x 12 in 2013.

Julie~Thanks x 12 and more!!!! In fact, there aren’t enough ways to say thanks for what 12 x 12 has meant to me…it has meant—more than the fact that I have written 10 drafts so far…more than the fact that I have revised several…more than the fact that I have submitted two of these…more than the fact that one of these got me the Barbara Karlin Grant Runner-up…more than the fact that my writing has improved WAY more than if I had been on my own…more than the fact that I have made friends and contacts that I would’ve NEVER had the pleasure of knowing…OK…I’ll stop, because there’s no way I can name all this has meant. Just know that I am extremely grateful that you wanted to challenge yourself to write 12 drafts and that you were kind enough to invite us along!
December 6, 2012 at 3:39 pm
Julie
Penny, I’m so grateful you came along too. You are a shining star example of what can be accomplished when you put all you can into a challenge like this. I’m also grateful that, as of this September, we got to be in-person friends in addition to e-friends. 🙂

12×12 is a wonderful idea! I’ve heard about it here & there over the past year, but never really took a look for myself. Sounds like the perfect challenge to get past the idea collection & good intensions, and on to the next (and most important) part! Being an illustrator, writing pretty much terrifies me, and procrastination becomes my best friend when I try to write anything. So much to work on… but 12×12 sounds like a great way to start!

This will be an awesome way to create stories from the ideas I’ve come up with last month. While I’ve never attempted this, I’m in in 2013. I can’t wait to get started. Hope it’s okay if I’ve already started brainstorming my first ideas…

That’s the best prize ever!!!! I think I meant to start this last year doing 12×12… and I fell off the wagon in… January? Maybe February. HOWEVER, I did write an entire novel, get back to submitting manuscripts I’ve completed, and getting new ideas down! So now I’m set for 2013. I should mention that I moved across the world in August (and was preparing to do that for a year before)… so I have a good excuse! But now I’m moved and I appreciate you so much Julie!

Aww, thanks Marcy! I’m surprised you even remember my name after the busy year you’ve had! 🙂 Will be so glad to have you back!

I anticipated PiBoIdMo being a huge commitment but it was a lot of fun so 12 x 12 seems to be the next logical step using the ideas I already have. First New Year’s resolution for 2013 made!

Writing friends, if you DID do 12×12 this year, you know how valuable it was–a priceless experience, whether you finished 1 or 12 drafts.
And if you DIDN’T do 12×12, you will really enjoy 2013. Plunge in with us and enjoy the richness of this writing community–the wealth of ideas, the treasure trove of encouragement.
Thanks Julie and Tara…what a team!

@Debbie @Joanna @Damon (SevenAcreSky) It’s really been a pleasure working with you and getting to know you all this year. Your contributions have enriched me too. I agree with Damon’s assessment that 12 x 12 is a “treasure trove” of encouragement.

Once I was an illustrator. Then PiBoIdMo came along and I thought, well, maybe I can do this. Then 12×12 happened a few years later. 12×12 allowed me to really see myself as a picturebook writer. I’m not published yet, but thanks to these 2 challenges I am even closer now. Thank you, Julie, thank you Tara, and thanks to my fellow participants who help inspire me every day!

Many thanks for starting 12 x 12, Julie. I signed up for the mailing list early this month, so I’m all set and raring to go. I’m looking forward to having a supportive writing community to learn from and to help me be accountable for turning all these ideas into books. Tim McCanna’s video was wonderful!

Hi Julie, I remember longingly looking at your challenge last year knowing that I just wasn’t in a position to take it on! But 2013 is a different matter – I’m looking forward to bring part of the 12×12 challenge!

Wow! What great news! I was wondering how I’d continue to keep myself inspired and get the words on the page after PiBoIdMo was over. Super excited about 12×12!!

I got more than 30 ideas which is great. Unfortunately I only wrote 4 drafts for 12x12in12. Like you said, it’s better than nothing and more than last year. Thanks for keeping it going! 🙂

Julie, I love 12×12 and your inspiration to all of us to plant our Picture Book Ideas, water them and make them grow into actual manuscripts. I hope I can participate in 2013 because I always need accountability!

Catching up on all the PiBoIdMo posts. 12×12 is a great challenge. Right now, I have nine badly written manuscripts. Time to get back to writing and revising. Someone needs to start a challenge for revising. These challenges are the only way I get anything done.

I too am catching up on the PiBoIdMo posts….After completing the 2012 PiBoIdMo I have a teetering pile of workable ideas and several illustrations in the notebook. The 12×12 in 2013 is going to help me focus on getting something completed, or at least change 12 of my ideas into picture book lookalikes – Thanks Tara and thanks Julie (my two new best friends)

I didn’t get to do 12×12 this year, but I wanted to. And, I applied to the Institute of Children’s Literature, but they were not accepting students. So, I made a plan and a promise to myself that I would do PiboIdMo, and take my list of ideas into 12×12. I was determined to bang out a few manuscripts. I have a few drafts so far, and I’m excited about it. I just have to figure out which level I can afford since I lost my job. Maybe just the first level and see how it goes. I like the combination of motivation and accountability. I have a tendency to go strong for about 3 weeks, and then fizzle out. It would be nice to have other people to keep me going…

I’ve been hemming and hawing about trying 12×12, but now that I have 30+ ideas I’m thinking, “What the hey? Why not?” (Because I’m chicken!)
