For so many of us, January represents an opportunity to reset. We make all kinds of promises to ourselves: I’m going to get more sleep. I’m going to eat more vegetables. I’m going to read more books. I’m going to finish that manuscript that’s been sitting on my desk for two years.
Of course, if you are one of those people who can make such resolutions and keep them, I applaud you.
I, however, am not such a person.
I am the person who joined a different gym every new January, declaring that this would be the year that I would really commit to getting healthy. But while the gyms changed, the outcome was always the same. I’d work out regularly for three months, and then I’d stop. A kid would get sick. I’d get sick … or tired. I’d have too much work that day. It might be raining outside, and no one wants to work out wet. Right?
One day I met a new neighbor at the dog park, and we hit it off immediately. We both loved the arts. We both loved our dogs. Our girls went to the same high school. We commiserated and laughed over our shared lack of executive function in our own lives. Since neither of our dogs were actually well behaved at the dog park, we decided that we would walk together twice a week, up and down the hills of Brookline, MA.
We did. For years. Those regular walks inspired me to set up similar walking dates with other friends. I realized that not only did I enjoy these power walks, but they were creating a structure in my week that allowed me to accomplish even more than I’d imagined.
I know, I know … Why is she talking about exercise during Storystorm?
I learned something really important from having an exercise buddy. I am someone who is more accountable to others than I am to myself–about some things at least. I really struggle to put aside and protect time for me— for the things I love and the things I NEED to do.While I have called myself a writer since the mid-1990s, you will not be surprised when I tell you there were many, many years when this writer simply did not write. I took care of kids. I did laundry. I grocery shopped. I worked. I picked up the phone every time my parents, my in-laws, or friends called during my writing time. I skipped writing time because I answered work emails or because I was on social media.
I could beat myself up about my lack of discipline. I’d be lying if I said I never did over the course of all those years. But knowing yourself and knowing what you need to create a thriving writing practice is empowering.
I need accountability.
When I have accountability, I can accomplish exciting things.
When I began Write Now!, a free, online writing accountability group for Whale Rock Workshops, I created it for myself as much as for others. I know so many writers who struggle to get in the chair when life pulls them in a million different directions.
We run our accountability groups for two and a half hours, three times a week. Everyone takes turns setting a goal for the day. We write quietly, side-by-side, and then we come back together to check out at the end.
I have been more focused on my writing in the past 4 years than I was in the previous 15. Our community of writers keeps one another accountable. We are connected. We root and cheer each other along whether a writer is completing a draft or whether a writer feels despondent over a rejection. We show up because we know there are people counting on us to be there. Counting on us to do the work so that they can do the work, too.
So as January 2025’s Story Storm comes to an end, I congratulate you. You have just participated in a month-long idea generation practice with two thousand of your fellow children’s writer friends. You have ideas with which to go forth and create.
Now, I encourage you to ask yourself what you need to maintain this momentum as you move into February. What kind of scaffolding do you need to put in place for yourself? If it is accountability you seek, find a friend or join a group like Write Now!. Block the time you need in your calendar, make it non-negotiable, and hold yourself and your writing buddy (ies) accountable.
It works. I promise.
Happy writing.

I have been saying that contests give me that time bound momentum that always makes me write. But perhaps it’s deeper than that and I feel accountable for being a part of them. Sounds like a need a February resolution to find accountability partners !

Of all the wonderful posts, I think this one resonated with me the most. I am someone who thrives on accountability and wanders all over the place without it. Thank you, Shari, for the sense of solidarity and the encouragement to seek out ways to stay accountable. Both of my critique groups now meet regularly on Zoom to “quiet write” together, and it’s incredibly productive. Like magic!

I am in this cycle right now – having done ‘all the things’ to make me a better writer – but it’s accountability. Not just to someone else but myself and my writing life. It’s a tough pill to swallow. I was a top-tier student all my life because I had a structure, deadlines, a desire to prove my mettle, and … it just felt good to get things done and done well – within a group. I will be taking this one to heart.

While we don’t really hold each other accountable, I think every one could benefit from a group like our “Every Third Wednesday” group. Our critique groups hold us accountable. Our support group reminds us that we’re all human and sometimes life gets in the way, and that’s OK. (And I get the BEST book and binging recommendations from our group!😉)

Good morning! I’m reviewing your posting on Jan. 30th. I am surprised to read a number of comments mentioning accountability groups… 12×12, Whale Rock, SCBW, and yours is unnamed. Is there a list available to gathering these resources? I would find it helpful, maybe others too. Thanks, Susan
January 31, 2025 at 9:49 am
Rebecca Gardyn Levington
Not sure if there’s a “list” but definitely check out 12×12 (http://12x12challenge.com) soon as I believe enrollment for the year ends at end of Feb. I’ve been a member for 8 years (just starting my 9th, and it has been an incredible community for support). There’s also The Writing Barn which runs Courage To Create (https://thewritingbarn.com/courage-to-create/), and Inked Voices (https://app.inkedvoices.com). But really, you can create an “accountability group” with any other writers you know. Just make goals and hold each other accountable. With my poetry challenge it was literally 4 of us writers who decided to write a poem a week and send them to each other each Sunday night. That’s it!

Shari,
Accountability works! Besides it’s rewarding being there for others and having them be there for us. Ideas bounce between us as we keep one another focused and uplifted. My Critique Groups have created a “village” of friends who push me, challenge me and hold me up during times of self-doubt. Being part of the Inked Voices online community keeps me accountable, encouraged and growing as a storyteller.
Thank you for your honest post about the struggles we all face now and then. “Write Now” sounds like a place for us to land. Sending you energy and inspiration for your continued success…

I’m so glad to have been introduced to Whale Rock! What great resources you offer. And good call about accountability. I find myself more accountable to others than to myself often, especially regarding deliverables for writing, my second job (as it is for many of us!). Accountability partners are WONDERFUL! If I don’t do something, I know I will have to answer for it. And like exercise, it’s more fun to be doing it with someone by your side.

Thank you, Shari, for sharing your story. In many ways, a critique group will act as an accountability group, but I never thought about having monthly “accountability” write-ins. It’s a neat idea.

Hi Shari, thanks for your illuminating blog. I, too, need accountability. I am a freelance children’s writer with a portfolio of books and online material, which I love doing and am very proud of. But when it comes to writing my own material from scratch, because I don’t have a deadline and am not working for someone else, I struggle to prioritise it. I would love to win a 90-minute workshop with Whale Rock Workshops.

An online accountability group is a great idea. I always show up for my twice weekly tai chi class. Perhaps if I had a writing group that met at least two times per week, I’d get more writing done. Thanks for sharing this group idea!!!

I had a principal once who said that teachers “are not on an island.” That was wishful thinking, because most teachers fell like they can be. Writers are the same. We sometimes feel like we are on an island–until accountability steps in and shows us otherwise.

I needed to hear this, I created a clockify account to record my time and a spreadsheet log where I record minutes for time spent under a smattering of writing goals in headings I date and log 15min or even 5min to give myself credit. I ask myself why am I productive at work and not at home, the office has the needed supplies, a blocked out schedule, a routine, workplace adrenaline and the incentive of pay periods, less reminders of household management items.

I definitely feel this, Shari! With our crazy busy lives, it’s so important to schedule (and respect) time to create/write. I find it so hard, because my schedule can be so in flux; I can see how having an accountability buddy would be a huge help. I used to have a good network of people that helped me do this, but it was a community I paid to be a part of, and it just got too expensive for my humble income. As a result, I don’t currently have any creator/writer friends – what would your advice be for those of us who perhaps can’t afford to be part of a network in finding those people to help hold us accountable on a more regular basis? Thanks so much for your insight and guidance!

What a neat way to have an accountability group/partner. I’m not really cut out for working with others around me, even if they are online, but this is a neat idea….sort of a virtual classroom or home office. Shari, I am guilty of putting the new year pressure on myself with goals or resolutions only to see myself fail. You are absolutely right about we need to set time aside for ourselves. Lately I have been preaching to myself about setting attainable goals. Start small and work up to the bigger goal(s). That way I won’t feel so defeated if my “big” goal was not met.

Fortunately, I took a class through the Highlights Foundation called “Just Do It” which has something called writing sprints as one of the components of the course. Ugh structure is so vital! My critique group keeps me accountable, but I can get carried away with working on feedback for the other members while neglecting to get my own manuscripts in shape for THEM to critique (oops!) This post was a good reminder to just say no to distractions; after all, there is always a reason to say ‘not right now’ to writing! Just write…the reasons will still be waiting for ya 😉

SHARI: THANK YOU for ENCOURAGING us to ask “what kind of scaffolding [we] need to put in place” so we can be accountable to our work—to our DREAMS. I LOVE the idea of having an accountability writing buddy so we can help motivate one another to get up on those cold mornings and get to work, when we’d much rather stay warm and cosy in bed. “. . . [showing] up because we know there are people counting on us to be there. Counting on us to do the work so that they can do the work, too.” And ESPECIALLY remembering not only our accountability buddy is counting on us—but so are those who NEED our stories. BEAUTIFUL! THANK YOU! I SO NEEDED to read this post!

This reminds me that I have to block out writing time on my calendar. For several months I participated in an online writing group via Zoom. We met for 2 hours twice/week, said Hi, then silenced our Zoom and it was optional if we kept the video on. We wrote “together” for 2 hours, then spent 5 mins talking about how we felt about what we had accomplished. It was fabulous. I may have to start a group like that myself!

My walking partner was my daughter, and it should have been easy since she lives with me. I don’t love walking, but I would stick to our plan to walk every evening. Unfortunately, having done it once, she’s prone to taking the next day off and getting snippy with me as I stand there ready to go. Before you know it, we haven’t walked in a year!

I can totally relate to this post, Shari! Thank you for sharing. Writing is so difficult when it’s just for me. Though that’s a bit sad, it is what it is!
Just last week I was madly sweeping the floor when a friend suddenly texted that she was coming over. 😉 And realized I had only swept the floor the week before when the same friend was coming over. Perhaps she needs to come over twice a week or so.

Such a great reminder! It’s definitely hard to balance everything. I was just thinking that my goal of having a cleaner house has really been working out this January. But is cleaning taking over my writing time? Do I need to rethink this? Haha!

Shari, your blog touched a chord. So many of us struggle with what you described. I also smiled, because later today, some friends from a Highlights workshop and I are meeting for the exact kind of meetup that your Write Now! group provides. One friend suggested the suggestion “to keep me accountable,” and we all quickly signed on to join her, feeling the need, too.
Thank you for your powerful, relatable blog that will be a reminder of how connecting with others can offer just what we need to get/keep on track.

Hin Shari,
Wow! Just what I needed to boost me out of my funk and that lovely “imposter syndrome.” I have an exceptional peer critique group that holds me accountable every month, and I treasure that time together; but I need more of that. I’m also involved with Sequential Artist Workshop (S.A.W.) online classes and they keep me focused on my art/writing goals. All in all, I definitely appreciate your post and it’s perfect timing for me!
Thanks again! Best, Laurie

My critique group has helped with accountability. I sign up for free or low cost webinars and I also set up what I want to get done that week on my desk and do a to do list for myself. These sometimes work and sometimes don’t. I am more conscious of what I want to accomplish and certain things do get done. My scaffolding.

I miss having a core group of KidLit creators to meet with regularly for accountability. We used to meet at a coffee shop a few times a week to write and chat. And often we ended up chatting more than writing while we were together at the coffee shop… but then we’d go home and get so much writing done, because we’d opened the creative floodgates in our minds!! I haven’t found that since I moved nearly 10 years ago. I need to make 2025 my year to get back out there!

Your post is full of common sense, logical thought and yes, I could be your older sister. I tend to say, I will write after..I babysit, visit a neighbour, clean the windows etc. So now I am retired, and I feel a little lost, as I try to negotiate the world of putting a book out there and finding readers. Oh Shari! You hit the nail on the head with this one! I make myself more accountable to others than to my own self and my goals. I have proven this as I set a rule for myself regarding having a new piece for each month’s meeting for a poetry group in which I have studied and participated for more than fourteen years! I have met that goal, knowing that I have that accountability. So…..maybe it’s time to set the same rules for my picture book writing as well! Thank you!

Shari, having an accountability partner is EVERYTHING! And the “not the best behaved dog” part of your story resonated deeply with me because my very lovable and loving 77 lbs. Goldendoodle sometimes just cannot help himself. If I didn’t have my BFF who has his 2 BFFs I would never be out on the trail 5-7 days per week. And about accountability for writing. I’m working on that too.

Thank you Shari, every idea for how to keep writing and write regularly is appreciated! I’m now thinking about making accountability my word for 2025. I’ve only stayed accountable with others to maybe 50% of what I could be doing. Thank you for your post and encouragement!

Accountability! I will pursue this. I’ve had it in the past – a writing buddy at a coffeehouse or library. Or by phone.
But it’s time for a new go at an accountability option. A real date regularly with writing
Thanks so much.

I find that menial tasks or running (or walks) are ideal for asking my subconscious questions about whatever story I’m working on at the moment. I send a question to my subconscious at the start of my run and then wait for possible directions to take the story problem.

Wow – when you talk about all the other things you do during your “writing” time, it’s like you’re talking about me. On the one hand, I feel less guilty knowing I’m not the only one. On the other, it makes me appreciate my weekly critique group that much more— I realize that without their accountability, I wouldn’t get anything done!
