In the realm of children’s literature, rhyming picture books hold a special place in my heart. It is just something about the lyrical flow of rhymes that stimulates creativity and imagination. My mom loved Dr. Seuss, and she must have read every one of those books to me a hundred times. As a child, when I was having difficulty in school, my mom would make up rhymes and songs to help me learn. The repetition and rhythm helped me remember and retain the lesson—the melodies never failed to capture my attention. It is no surprise that my debut picture book, “I’d Rather Be Me”, is full of infectious rhyme and repetition.

In many ways, writing a rhyming picture book is similar to writing a song. You’re thinking about rhyme, rhythm, and lyricism. You’re imagining the artistic effect that you want the words to have—the way they’ll wash over the reader and evoke a certain feeling. So, naturally, the first step in my writing process is to turn to music. And for me, silence is distracting, which might also have something to do with growing up as the youngest of five children in a house full of glorious chaos; there was always some type of noise to compete with.

However, many authors struggle with rhyme and meter, and querying a rhyming manuscript is a difficult task. But whether you are writing a rhyming picture book, a YA manuscript, or a science fiction novel, music and rhythm can be the catalyst you need to jump start your writing.
For most of us, music evokes emotion. Old songs trigger personal memories, transporting us back to another place and time. I remember at my son’s wedding reception, the DJ played a song that sent me straight back to high school. At that moment I was 16 again; shopping for the perfect dress before the high school dance, making plans for a group dinner beforehand, and letting loose with the freedom that only a teenager experiences.
A teacher recently shared with me a technique she uses in the classroom to help her students find inspiration to write. The teacher selects music for the entire class to listen to and instructs the students to focus on the sounds the instruments are creating and the mood of the music. One of her favorites is the FANTASIA soundtrack. While listening, the students brainstorm adjectives and adverbs to describe the mood of the music. They then use that list of words in their stories. I immediately went home and listened to the FANTASIA soundtrack – great stuff for picture books!
Music has the ability to move us—our memories and our imaginations. Here’s how you can channel that power into inspiration for your writing:
PLAY A SONG. Turn on the music that you love. Listen carefully.
TODAY’S CHALLENGE:

Play a song, any you choose.
Let the music be your muse.
Music is a universal language. No matter what mood you want to create, there is a melody out there that can inspire it!

Emily – Thanks for this great post! I love the musicality of writing, especially rhyme and repetition. I will do your exercise today – to the song “Nine to Five.” Not an obvious tie in to picture book ideas but sure to get my creative juices flowing…

Emily, when I read your book’s title, one of my dad’s favorite songs “It Had to be you” popped into my head. Your suggestion to listen to music is an effective motivational and inspirational practice for me. I listen to music on my walks, and I return home ready to write more. Today, I’m revising a piece and will turn on the tunes. Congratulations on I’D RATHER BE ME.

Music to nurture ideas, whether with lyrics or not, the music itself is a language speaking to the heart. Emily, your approach here has its own beat, brings a creative rhythm that gets the toe tapping and writing flowing. Your choice of notes conveyed are appreciated throughout.

I wrote an Anthem for a contest and learned about poetry, rhyme, lyrics, tone, etc. I listened to songs as I was writing my own song/anthem for the contest. Congratulations on your debut! And thank you for this post. I’m from a musical family as well, so there is always music of some sort throughout our day. This quote “Music is a universal language. No matter what mood you want to create, there is a melody out there that can inspire it!” spoke to me. I’ve always had silence when writing – I want to hear the story I’m writing. This is something new and I’m willing to try it. My music of choice for this morning – the soundtrack to Star Wars. I fell in love with the movie’s music the first time I went to see the movie…yes, I’m that old! I am interested in how this will help me create my story. Thank you for sharing.

I am not a rhymer but songs and rhyme help children learn for sure!
By reedandwritekids on January 28, 2025 at 10:02 am
I also love rhyme & meter (even studied it as an undergrad) and sometimes can’t help but use it in picture book manuscripts. And I always create a playlist when I’m writing novels, but I will use music for shorter pieces now, too (Fantasia is a fantastic choice!). Thank you!
By Laurel Ranveig Abell on January 28, 2025 at 10:06 am
What a fabulous challenge. I’m going to see if I can find the Fantasia soundtrack 🙂
By cjfriess on January 28, 2025 at 10:06 am
I typically have a more chaotic approach where if a song comes on and hits true to any one of the manuscripts I’m working on, I’ll add it to the playlist… but I love this idea of intentionality behind listening to music. It takes me back to junior year of high school where my creative writing teacher would play Enya whenever we had in class writing time, and to this day, whenever I hear any song of theirs, I immediately have to grab a paper and pen and write! #Pavlov’sDog

This post resonates with me on many levels, Emily. I, too, enjoy writing rhyming stories and lyrical songs (I’m in a band). Emily, Thank you so much for this advice. As I am not a music lover, I would not have thought of doing this. But, as you say, we all have some music, mostly from our younger days, that evokes mood and memory. For me, it’s The Beatles, so I will definitely give your suggestion a go. I couldn’t possibly think with all that racket. Fantasia was a nightmare for me as a child. Even the thought of it still makes me shiver today. Thank you Emily. I remember a class assignment (4th grade) where we listened to Fantasia and wrote about what it made us think about. Clearly I need to go back to that — maybe with something from The Eurythmics, or maybe Mary Chapin Carpenter… ooh, Handel. The possibilities are mind boggling! Congratulations on your recent release.

Thanks for sharing, Emily! I love rhyme and meter and Dr. Seuss and Fantasia, too! I’m so happy to hear teachers are still introducing kiddos to Fantasia and all its beauty. I homeschooled my son, and I made up all sorts of songs and silly rhymes to teach him in the early years. I think you and I could be fast friends if ever we get to meet at a writer’s conference. Thanks so much for sharing–I will try all your suggestions for sure. 🙂

As a kid, my mom would put on Fantasia to get us to calm down and maybe nap. I usually watched the whole thing. I loved how they made stories from listening to the music. I will have to listen to some of my favorite instrumental music and day dream.

EMILY: THANK YOU for INSPIRING us to use music, rhythm, and rhyme to “. . . be the catalyst [we] need to jump start [our] writing.” I LOVE that this can be applied to writing ANY kind of genre—as “music is a universal language,” and can help us create on a deeper level than with just our words. It can even be what INSPIRES those words in the first place, and give life and meaning to them. BEAUTIFUL! THANK YOU!

Using music to revive memories and spark our imagination is a great writing tip. Children’s Author/Illustrator Maurice Sendak fuelled his creativity by listening to classical music. By mbhmaine on January 29, 2025 at 6:58 am
This was a fun challenge— with I think some great possibilities— but my song definitely was not quite picture book material— I’ll have to think on it for a bit more! But I did enjoy challenge, thank you!
By Bridgitte Rodguez on January 29, 2025 at 7:21 am
This was an interesting challenge for me. Usually, I can tune out the background fairly well. When I write, I prefer limited background noise. I don’t mind distractions because they help me look up and refocus. But music?
So I found myself concentrating on the lyrics, which is what usually grabs my attention with music. I’ve always looked for a story inside the lyrics.
Then I decided to listen to music without lyrics. I listened to some guitar music I got for free when I bought my son a vinyl for Christmas. I listened for emotion and thought about soundtracks, as you suggested. Some seeds are emerging!
Thank you for this exercise. I NEVER would have done this without your suggestion, but I’ll do it again!

Hi Emily,
Music IS a wonderful and universal tool! As a former middle school math teacher, the theme from Ratatouille accompanied our Math French Cuisine Cafe lesson! In our “appropriate” Cafe attire, hosts, customers, and guests loved learning: ordering meals, calculating subtotal, applying tax, and of course a generous tip, and the music aptly set the tone!
Thanks again for this wonderful idea!
Best, Laurie

I agree music can inspire emotion and memories! It had not occurred to me to use music to help create a story or maybe, a scene in a story…I can see how it could help with rhyming stories, as well. Thank you for the advice!

What a wonderful encouragement. I have grown up with music filling my life, and I am a keyboardist but haven’t played for a few years.Music is a great inspiration for stories: after all, songs are stories set to music, and often in rhyme. I LOVE writing in rhyme, have been doing it on and off since I was at primary school in the 60’s. And as I read your post, the Hollies song The Air That I breathe started on my playlist (another favourite song.) Now I have some inspiration for a story about love between parents and kidsl

To me, music is an important part of my writing. It may call the muse sometimes, put me in a mood for a certain emotion or just provide background music to cover the screaming of kids in the other room. Ha.
